What Are Students’ Perceptions of Design Research and Approaches?

    Get PDF
Approaches and methods used in the design research process have been discussed over the years. Yet, most of the discussions did not take into account the perceptions of the students. While a fundamental understanding of design research may assist students in the real world, those students may fail to apply the foundations to a complex design problem or only use those methods they feel comfortable with and deem useful. To offer insight on this particular area, a paper questionnaire was distributed to more than one hundred design students in order to understand students' perceptions on design research and their habits. Findings showed that design students felt that research was important to their design process and they spent more than 40% of time on researching in their design process. In general, students believe that more research is necessary at the beginning of the design process, such as the stages of planning, defining problem and parameters. In addition, undergraduate and graduate students viewed various research methods in different regards. The understanding of the perceptions of current undergraduate and graduate students regarding design research will provide teachers with a better understanding of the influence of the students' background on the design process and how to cope with those influences. The results can be used to improve the design education

Spatiogram features to characterize pearls in paintings

    Get PDF
Objective characterization of jewels in paintings, especially pearls, has been a long lasting challenge for art historians. The way an artist painted pearls reflects his ability to observing nature and his knowledge of contemporary optical theory. Moreover, the painterly execution may also be considered as an individual characteristic useful in distinguishing hands. In this work, we propose a set of image analysis techniques to analyze and measure spatial characteristics of the digital images of pearls, all relying on the so called spatiogram image representation. Our experimental results demonstrate good correlation between the new metrics and the visually observed image features, and also capture the degree of realism of the visual appearance in the painting. In that sense, these results set the basis in creating a practical tool for art historical attribution and give strong motivation for further investigations in this direction

SEE ? The sky is a blue transparency; the sun shines straight through it with a plate of yellow sheen serving as the underlayer. And look how forked branches catch at the suggestion of gold, how it glitters down the bole and pours like buttermilk into the pool of green below..

    More London Wordplay

    Get PDF
With the aid of The Wordbook, I have been able to increase somewhat Darryle Francis\u27s collection of transposals, transadditions, and transdeletions on placenames in and near London. All words appear in either The Official Scrabble Players\u27 Dictionary or Darryle Francis\u27s article in the May 1990 Word Ways. Although there are not many new transposals, the number of transadditions and transdeletions has been significantly increased. Further contributions are welcome

Primary hyperparathyroidism in pregnancy : case report and review

    Get PDF
A twenty-six year old secundagravida booked her pregnancy at 14 weeks gestation. It was noted in the past obstetric history that the woman had lost her first child at 41 weeks gestation, delivering a stillborn baby weighing 4.2kg. At 34 weeks into the second pregnancy mild polyhydramnios was noted and the patient was admitted. During her hospitalisation the patient complained of having passed a small renal stone. Two serum calcium levels were found to be significantly elevated 3.36mmol/l and 3.2mmol/l. Serum parathormone was found to be significantly elevated - 247pg/ml (Normal levels: 12.0 - 72.0pg/ml) and an ultrasound scan of the neck confirmed the presence of a parathyroid adenoma. A parathyroidectomy was performed and the postoperative period was uneventful. The rest of the pregnancy was uneventful and at 38 weeks gestation a healthy child was delivered vaginally. In view of this woman’s past history and the events occurring during the second pregnancy it may be useful to consider obtaining serum levels of calcium in cases of idiopathic stillbirth.peer-reviewe

Plastron properties of a superhydrophobic surface

    Get PDF
Most insects and spiders drown when submerged during flooding or tidal inundation, but some are able to survive and others can remain submerged indefinitely without harm. Many achieve this by natural adaptations to their surface morphology to trap films of air, creating plastrons which fix the water-vapor interface and provide an incompressible oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange surface. Here the authors demonstrate how the surface of an extremely water-repellent foam mimics this mechanism of underwater respiration and allows direct extraction of oxygen from aerated water. The biomimetic principle demonstrated can be applied to a wide variety of man-made superhydrophobic materials
