    The separation of the Cerenkov light and particle fronts in extensive air showers at sea level

    This thesis describes a study of the separation of Cerenkov light and particle frontsin large cosmic ray air showers. The work was carried out during the winters of 1975/76 and 1976/77 at the British Universities Joint Air Shower array at Haverah Park. A description of the work to date on Cerenkov light in air showers is given to complement the study. A theoretical treatment, based on computer simulations, of the separation is given as well as the experimental results obtained during the two seasons. A description of a more advanced experiment studying Cerenkov light in E.A.S. is also presented. The experimental work described was the responsibility of the author

    Segregation by thermal diffusion in granular shear flows

    Segregation by thermal diffusion of an intruder immersed in a sheared granular gas is analyzed from the (inelastic) Boltzmann equation. Segregation is induced by the presence of a temperature gradient orthogonal to the shear flow plane and parallel to gravity. We show that, like in analogous systems without shear, the segregation criterion yields a transition between upwards segregation and downwards segregation. The form of the phase diagrams is illustrated in detail showing that they depend sensitively on the value of gravity relative to the thermal gradient. Two specific situations are considered: i) absence of gravity, and ii) homogeneous temperature. We find that both mechanisms (upwards and downwards segregation) are stronger and more clearly separated when compared with segregation criteria in systems without shear.Comment: 8 figures.     Integration Of An Extended Octagonal Ring Transducer And Soil Coulterometer For Identifying Soil Compaction

    The soil coulterometer is an “on‐the‐go” electro‐mechanical system which collects impedance force data at multiple depths using an oscillating coulter. During the initial testing (summer 2006), only vertical soil impedance force data was collected using a pressure sensor. To improve the performance of the coulterometer, an extended octagonal ring transducer was integrated into the system to collect both the horizontal and vertical impedance forces given by the soil. In the summer of 2007, data was collected using the revised sensor from a typical central Kentucky field setting in a 0.8‐ha (2‐acre) plot. Four passes were made with the coulterometer. Seventy five coulter oscillations between depths of 100 mm (4 in.) and 305 mm (12 in.) were obtained for each pass. Ten standard cone penetrometer measurements were taken for each pass between depths of 100 mm (4 in.) and 305 mm (12 in.) using a multi‐probe soil cone penetrometer. Three soil bulk density and water content measurements between depths of 100 mm (4 in.) and 305 mm (12 in.) in steps of 50 mm (2 in.) were taken for each pass using a nuclear soil moisture/density gauge. Simple linear regression analysis was used to find the relationship between coulter indices (kN/m), cone index (MPa), dry soil bulk density (Mg/m3) and water content (%).Coefficients of determination (R2) as high as 0.996 were obtained between coulter indices and dry soil bulk density measurements and 0.998 for coulter indices and water content measurements

    High Speed Phase-Resolved 2-d UBV Photometry of the Crab pulsar

    We report a phase-resolved photometric and morphological analysis of UBV data of the Crab pulsar obtained with the 2-d TRIFFID high speed optical photometer mounted on the Russian 6m telescope. By being able to accurately isolate the pulsar from the nebular background at an unprecedented temporal resolution (1 \mu s), the various light curve components were accurately fluxed via phase-resolved photometry. Within the UBVUBV range, our datasets are consistent with the existing trends reported elsewhere in the literature. In terms of flux and phase duration, both the peak Full Width Half Maxima and Half Width Half Maxima decrease as a function of photon energy. This is similarly the case for the flux associated with the bridge of emission. Power-law fits to the various light curve components are as follows; \alpha = 0.07 \pm 0.19 (peak 1), \alpha = -0.06 \pm 0.19 (peak 2) and \alpha = -0.44 \pm 0.19 (bridge) - the uncertainty here being dominated by the integrated CCD photometry used to independently reference the TRIFFID data. Temporally, the main peaks are coincident to \le 10 \mu s although an accurate phase lag with respect to the radio main peak is compromised by radio timing uncertainties. The plateau on the Crab's main peak was definitively determined to be \leq 55 \mu s in extent and may decrease as a function of photon energy. There is no evidence for non-stochastic activity over the light curves or within various phase regions, nor is there evidence of anything akin to the giant pulses noted in the radio. Finally, there is no evidence to support the existence of a reported 60 second modulation suggested to be as a consequence of free precession.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Optical Pulse-Phased Photopolarimetry of PSR B0656+14

    We have observed the optical pulse profile of PSR B0656+14 in 10 phase bins at a high signal-to-noise ratio, and have measured the linear polarization profile over 30% of the pulsar period with some significance. The pulse profile is double-peaked, with a bridge of emission between the two peaks, similar to gamma-ray profiles observed in other pulsars. There is no detectable unpulsed flux, to a 1-sigma limit of 16% of the pulse-averaged flux. The emission in the bridge is highly (~ 100%) polarized, with a position angle sweep in excellent agreement with the prediction of the Rotating Vector Model as determined from radio polarization observations. We are able to account for the gross features of the optical light curve (i.e., the phase separation of the peaks) using both polar cap and outer gap models. Using the polar cap model, we are also able to estimate the height of the optical emission regions.Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, accepted by ApJ (scheduled v597 n2, November 10, 2003

    Moonrise: Sampling the South Pole-Aitken Basin to Address Problems of Solar System Significance

    A mission to land in the giant South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin on the Moon's southern farside and return a sample to Earth for analysis is a high priority for Solar System Science. Such a sample would be used to determine the age of the SPA impact; the chronology of the basin, including the ages of basins and large impacts within SPA, with implications for early Solar System dynamics and the magmatic history of the Moon; the age and composition of volcanic rocks within SPA; the origin of the thorium signature of SPA with implications for the origin of exposed materials and thermal evolution of the Moon; and possibly the magnetization that forms a strong anomaly especially evident in the northern parts of the SPA basin. It is well known from studies of the Apollo regolith that rock fragments found in the regolith form a representative collection of many different rock types delivered to the site by the impact process (Fig. 1). Such samples are well documented to contain a broad suite of materials that reflect both the local major rock formations, as well as some exotic materials from far distant sources. Within the SPA basin, modeling of the impact ejection process indicates that regolith would be dominated by SPA substrate, formed at the time of the SPA basin-forming impact and for the most part moved around by subsequent impacts. Consistent with GRAIL data, the SPA impact likely formed a vast melt body tens of km thick that took perhaps several million years to cool, but that nonetheless represents barely an instant in geologic time that should be readily apparent through integrated geochronologic studies involving multiple chronometers. It is anticipated that a statistically significant number of age determinations would yield not only the age of SPA but also the age of several prominent nearby basins and large craters within SPA. This chronology would provide a contrast to the Imbrium-dominated chronology of the nearside Apollo samples and an independent test of the timing of the lunar cataclysm

    Precision agriculture is already being used commercially to improve variability management in row crop agriculture. In the same way, understanding how spatial and temporal variability of animal, forage, soil and landscape features affect grazing behavior and forage utilization provides potential to modify pasture management, improve efficiency of utilization, and maximize profits. Recent advances in global positioning system (GPS) technology have allowed the development of lightweight GPS collar receivers suitable for monitoring animal position at 5-min intervals. The GPS data can be imported into a geographic information system (GIS) to assess animal behavior characteristics and pasture utilization. This paper describes application and use of GPS technology on intensively managed beef cattle, and implications for livestock behavior and management research on pasture

    Estrogen effects on triglyceride metabolism in analbuminemic rats.BackgroundTriglyceride (TG) levels are normally lower in female rats, while the opposite is the case in the Nagase analbuminemic rats (NAR). Increased TG levels in normal males are caused by a testosterone-mediated decrease in postheparin (PH) lipoprotein lipase (LpL). Castration of males reduces TG, while castration of females is without effect. TG levels are reduced by castration of the female NAR, suggesting that estrogen rather than testosterone causes hypertriglyceridemia in this strain. The mechanism for this increase is unknown.MethodsWe measured secretion of very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL) TG using Triton WR 1339 clearance as the disappearance from blood of 3H-trioleate and 14C-cholesterol–labeled chylomicrons (CM), and the activity of the PH lipases: LpL and hepatic lipase (HL). All were determined in Sprague-Dawley (SD) and NAR female, male, and ovariectomized (OVX) rats.ResultsTG levels were significantly greater in female NAR in comparison to all other groups. Ovariectomy of NAR significantly ameliorated hypertriglyceridemia. VLDL TG secretion was significantly greater in intact female NAR compared with all other groups. There were no other differences in VLDL TG secretion among the other groups. The clearance of CM was greatest in female SD rats, and OVX had no effect. NAR cleared CM less well than did SD rats (P < 0.001), but among NAR, clearance was greatest in OVX NAR and male NAR (P < 0.002). Both PH LpL activity and HL activity were lowest in female NAR (P < 0.05). Ovariectomy partially corrected the defect in HL (P < 0.05).ConclusionTG levels in female NAR are in part a result of increased VLDL-TG secretion, an effect mediated by estrogen. The presence of an estrogen-mediated catabolic defect that was alleviated by OVX was also observed. This catabolic defect is likely a result of an estrogen-mediated decrease both in LpL and HL expressed only in the presence of analbuminemia

    Proposed Design Modifications to Reduce Risk of Operating Rotary Field Mowers

    The primary objective of this project was to reduce risk of injury associated with operating a rotary mower driven by a tractor power take-off (PTO) by developing and evaluating design improvements and determining their economic feasibility. Researchers have concluded that alteration of machinery design has a greater impact on the reduction of accidents than safety training. Implementation of an Operator Presence Sensing System (OPSS) and removal of the PTO are the two injury-reducing, engineering modifications evaluated by this research. Hydraulic power allows this to occur by providing dynamic braking, few moving parts (removal of the PTO), and controllable power. A hydraulic circuit was developed to power the mower and to enable an OPSS. Tractor hydraulics were simulated using a hydraulic training bench. Two mower configurations were tested: 6.55 cm3 rev-1 (0.4 in.3 rev -1) displacement motor with a 0.748 kg blade and 47.5 cm3 rev -1 (2.9 in.3 rev -1) displacement motor with a 9.4 kg blade. A PTO-driven rotary mower was not used to test the circuit due to spatial and safety limitations of the hydraulic training bench. Results from the first mower configuration verified the concepts behind the hydraulic circuit. The second configuration verified the OPSS and indicated the applicability of the circuit to a rotary mower
