    Variations in propagation delay times for line ten (TV) based time transfers

    Variation in the propagation delay for a 30 km TV (Line Ten) radio link was evaluated for a series of 30 independent measurements. Time marks from TV Channel 5 WTTG in Washington, D.C. were simultaneously measured at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and at the United States Naval Observatory against each stations' local cesium standard clocks. Differences in the stations' cesium clocks were determined by portable cesium clock transfers. Thirty independent timing determinations were made. The root mean square deviation in the propagation delay calculated from the timing determinations was 11 ns. The variations seen in the propagation delays are believed to be caused by environmental factors and by errors in the portable clock timing measurements. In correlating the propagation delay variations with local weather conditions, only a moderate dependence on air temperature and absolute humidity was found

    Investigating Automatic Static Analysis Results to Identify Quality Problems: an Inductive Study

    Background: Automatic static analysis (ASA) tools examine source code to discover "issues", i.e. code patterns that are symptoms of bad programming practices and that can lead to defective behavior. Studies in the literature have shown that these tools find defects earlier than other verification activities, but they produce a substantial number of false positive warnings. For this reason, an alternative approach is to use the set of ASA issues to identify defect prone files and components rather than focusing on the individual issues. Aim: We conducted an exploratory study to investigate whether ASA issues can be used as early indicators of faulty files and components and, for the first time, whether they point to a decay of specific software quality attributes, such as maintainability or functionality. Our aim is to understand the critical parameters and feasibility of such an approach to feed into future research on more specific quality and defect prediction models. Method: We analyzed an industrial C# web application using the Resharper ASA tool and explored if significant correlations exist in such a data set. Results: We found promising results when predicting defect-prone files. A set of specific Resharper categories are better indicators of faulty files than common software metrics or the collection of issues of all issue categories, and these categories correlate to different software quality attributes. Conclusions: Our advice for future research is to perform analysis on file rather component level and to evaluate the generalizability of categories. We also recommend using larger datasets as we learned that data sparseness can lead to challenges in the proposed analysis proces

    When it comes to mineral synthesis, there is a lot we can learn from nature. Although we can synthesize a range of materials in the laboratory, the experimental conditions are often constrained to particular ranges of temperature, pH, etc. Biological systems, on the other hand, seem to be able to produce individual minerals and complex composite mineral structures under a variety of conditions, many of which are far from those applied to create their synthetic counterparts. Understanding how nature does this could provide a means to produce novel biomimetic materials with potential applications in a diverse range of fields from medicine to materials engineering

    Detection of Leishmania infantum by PCR, serology and cellular immune response in a cohort study of Brazilian dogs

    The sensitivity and specificity of PCR, serology (ELISA) and lymphoproliferative response to Leishmania antigen for the detection of Leishmania infantum infection were evaluated in a cohort of 126 dogs exposed to natural infection in Brazil. For PCR, Leishmania DNA from bone-marrow was amplified with both minicircle and ribosomal primers. The infection status and time of infection of each dog were estimated from longitudinal data. The sensitivity of PCR in parasite-positive samples was 98%. However, the overall sensitivity of PCR in post-infection samples, from dogs with confirmed infection, was only 68%. The sensitivity of PCR varied during the course of infection, being highest (78–88%) 0–135 days post-infection and declining to around 50% after 300 days. The sensitivity of PCR also varied between dogs, and was highest in sick dogs. The sensitivity of serology was similar in parasite-positive (84%), PCR-positive (86%) and post-infection (88%) samples. The sensitivity of serology varied during the course of infection, being lowest at the time of infection and high (93–100%) thereafter. Problems in determining the specificity of serology are discussed. The sensitivity and specificity of cellular responsiveness were low. These data suggest that PCR is most useful in detecting active or symptomatic infection, and that serology can be a more sensitive technique for the detection of all infected dogs

    Exclusion process for particles of arbitrary extension: Hydrodynamic limit and algebraic properties

    The behaviour of extended particles with exclusion interaction on a one-dimensional lattice is investigated. The basic model is called â„“\ell-ASEP as a generalization of the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) to particles of arbitrary length â„“\ell. Stationary and dynamical properties of the â„“\ell-ASEP with periodic boundary conditions are derived in the hydrodynamic limit from microscopic properties of the underlying stochastic many-body system. In particular, the hydrodynamic equation for the local density evolution and the time-dependent diffusion constant of a tracer particle are calculated. As a fundamental algebraic property of the symmetric exclusion process (SEP) the SU(2)-symmetry is generalized to the case of extended particles

    The time interval of successive water-drips from a faucet was examined over a wide range of the flow rate. The dripping interval alternately exhibits a stable state and a chaotic state as the flow rate increases. In the stable state, the volume of the drip is kept constant at fixed flow rates, and the constant volume increases with the flow rate. In the chaotic state, in addition to a mechanics that the drip is torn by its own weight, the vibration of the drip on the faucet takes part in the strange behavior of the interval.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, to be published in J.     Dynamics of trusses having nonlinear joints

    The transient analysis of trusses having nonlinear joints can be accomplished using the residual force technique. The technique was applied a two degree of freedom spring mass system, a four bay planar truss, and an actual ten bay deployable truss. Joints chosen for analysis were the nonlinear gap joints and the linear Voigt joints. Results from the nonlinear gap analyses generally indicate that coupling between the modes can display some interesting effects during free vibration. One particularly interesting effect was that the damping of the structure appeared to be higher than could be accounted for from modal damping alone. Energy transferral from the lower to the higher modes was found to exist as a result of the modal coupling. The apparently increased damping was due to the fact that the energy transferred to the higher modes is inherently dissipated more quickly. Another interesting phenomenon was that the lower modes could drive the higher modes even during free vibration and that these modes could display a rather large quasi-steady state behavior even when modal damping was present. Gaps were also found to increase the amplitude and period of the free vibration response as expected
