    Oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) boatwhistle call detection and patterns within a large-scale oyster restoration site

    During May 2015, passive acoustic recorders were deployed at eight subtidal oyster reefs within Harris Creek Oyster Sanctuary in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland USA. These sites were selected to represent both restored and unrestored habitats having a range of oyster densities. Throughout the survey, the soundscape within Harris Creek was dominated by the boatwhistle calls of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. A novel, multi-kernel spectral correlation approach was developed to automatically detect these boatwhistle calls using their two lowest harmonic bands. The results provided quantitative information on how call rate and call frequency varied in space and time. Toadfish boatwhistle fundamental frequency ranged from 140 Hz to 260 Hz and was well correlated (r = 0.94) with changes in water temperature, with the fundamental frequency increasing by similar to 11 Hz for every 1 degrees C increase in temperature. The boatwhistle call rate increased from just a few calls per minute at the start of monitoring on May 7 th to similar to 100 calls/min on May 10 th and remained elevated throughout the survey. As male toadfish are known to generate boatwhistles to attract mates, this rapid increase in call rate was interpreted to mark the onset of spring spawning behavior. Call rate was not modulated by water temperature, but showed a consistent diurnal pattern, with a sharp decrease in rate just before sunrise and a peak just after sunset. There was a significant difference in call rate between restored and unrestored reefs, with restored sites having nearly twice the call rate as unrestored sites. This work highlights the benefits of using automated detection techniques that provide quantitative information on species-specific call characteristics and patterns. This type of non-invasive acoustic monitoring provides longterm, semi-continuous information on animal behavior and abundance, and operates effectively in settings that are otherwise difficult to sample

    Information trade-offs for optical quantum communication

    Recent work has precisely characterized the achievable trade-offs between three key information processing tasks---classical communication (generation or consumption), quantum communication (generation or consumption), and shared entanglement (distribution or consumption), measured in bits, qubits, and ebits per channel use, respectively. Slices and corner points of this three-dimensional region reduce to well-known protocols for quantum channels. A trade-off coding technique can attain any point in the region and can outperform time-sharing between the best-known protocols for accomplishing each information processing task by itself. Previously, the benefits of trade-off coding that had been found were too small to be of practical value (viz., for the dephasing and the universal cloning machine channels). In this letter, we demonstrate that the associated performance gains are in fact remarkably high for several physically relevant bosonic channels that model free-space / fiber-optic links, thermal-noise channels, and amplifiers. We show that significant performance gains from trade-off coding also apply when trading photon-number resources between transmitting public and private classical information simultaneously over secret-key-assisted bosonic channels.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, see related, longer article at arXiv:1105.011

    Laser writing of individual atomic defects in a crystal with near-unity yield

    Atomic defects in wide band gap materials show great promise for development of a new generation of quantum information technologies, but have been hampered by the inability to produce and engineer the defects in a controlled way. The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is one of the foremost candidates, with single defects allowing optical addressing of electron spin and nuclear spin degrees of freedom with potential for applications in advanced sensing and computing. Here we demonstrate a method for the deterministic writing of individual NV centers at selected locations with high positioning accuracy using laser processing with online fluorescence feedback. This method provides a new tool for the fabrication of engineered materials and devices for quantum technologies and offers insight into the diffusion dynamics of point defects in solids.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Recurrence and outcomes of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis in children

    OBJECTIVES: To report clinical course, etiology, management, and long-term outcomes of children suffering from Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). METHODS: We conducted a study of all pediatric patients with SJS or TEN admitted between 2000 and 2007 to the Hospital for Sick Children and Children's Hospital Boston, and particular attention was paid to clinical manifestations, etiology, mortality, and long-term outcomes. RESULTS: We identified 55 cases of SJS (n = 47), TEN (n = 5), or SJS/TEN overlap syndrome (n - 3). Drugs were identified as the most likely etiologic agent in 29 children (53%); antiepileptic drugs were the most common agents (n = 16), followed by sulfonamide antibiotics (n = 7) and chemotherapy drugs (n = 2). Acute Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was confirmed in 12 children (22%), and herpes simplex virus was confirmed in 5 children (9%). Treatment regimens differed significantly between participating sites and included systemic antimicrobial agents (67%), systemic corticosteroids (40%), and antiviral drugs (31%). Intravenous immunoglobulin was administered to 21 children (38%), of whom 8 received concomitant systemic corticosteroids. Ten children (18%) had recurrence of SJS up to 7 years after the index episode, and 3 experienced multiple recurrences. Twenty-six children (47%) suffered long-term sequelae that mostly involved the skin and eyes. CONCLUSIONS: Mortality rate in children was lower than that reported in adults, but half of affected children suffered long-term complications. The recurrence rate of SJS was high (1 in 5), which suggests vulnerability and potential genetic predisposition.     Flow transformations and mud partitioning across submarine fan fringes

    Highly efficient sediment gravity flows can bypass mid-fan channels and lobes and deposit significant volumes of sand, mud, and particulate organic matter in outer-fan and basin-plain settings. The Serpukhovian to Bashkirian fill in the Shannon Basin, western Ireland, includes deep-water fan deposits (Ross Sandstone Fm) that gradationally overlie basin-floor shales (Clare Shale Fm). As part of a broader progradational succession, the upward transition from muddy basin floor to sandy fan preserves the stacked deposits of settings present prior to, and outboard of, mid-fan channels and lobes. Three fully cored boreholes and associated wireline data constrain the facies tracts in an 18-km-long panel oriented oblique to original depositional dip. Two distal successions dominated by hybrid event beds (HEBs) are recognized, separated by a prominent condensed section. The lower Cos-heen system includes m-thick, tabular HEBs with prominent linked debrites that pass down dip into much thinner sandstones overlain by sand-speckled mudstone caps that thicken distally before thinning. The latter are interpreted as secondary mudflows released following reconstitution of more thoroughly mixed sections of the up-dip linked debrites. Significant bypass and accumulation of mud by this mechanism helped heal local topography and maintain a relatively flat sea floor, promoting an overall tabular geometry for the deposits of larger volume hybrid flows reaching the distal sector of the basin. The overlying distal Ross system fringe is characterized by very fine- to fine-grained sandstones and is lateral to compensationally stacked lobes farther to the west. It has a progradational (at least initially) stacking pattern, facies transitions developed over shorter length scales, and includes outsized event beds, but these are thinner than those in the Cosheen system. Common banding and evidence for turbulence suppression by dispersed clay rather than entrained mud clasts indicate that these were transitional flows. In this case, event beds are inferred to taper distally, with significant mud emplaced by plug flow retained as caps to sandy event beds rather than bypassing down-dip. Different flow transformation mechanisms thus impacted how mud was partitioned across the fringe of the two systems, and this influenced bed geometries, larger scale bed stacking patterns, and stratigraphy. Whereas the flow-efficiency concept stresses the ability of flows to carry sand in a basinward direction, it is also imperative to consider the variable efficiency of mud transport given the operation of clay-induced flow transformations. These can either promote bypass or trigger premature fallout of mud, with implications for how systems fill accommodation, bed-scale facies transitions, and the burial and preservation of particulate organic carbon fractionated along with the clay in deep-water system fringes.Science Foundation IrelandGeological Survey Ireland (GSI) Griffith Geoscience AwardEquinor AS

    Development of strategies for effective communication of food risks and benefits across Europe: Design and conceptual framework of the FoodRisC project

Copyright @ 2011 Barnett et al.BACKGROUND: European consumers are faced with a myriad of food related risk and benefit information and it is regularly left up to the consumer to interpret these, often conflicting, pieces of information as a coherent message. This conflict is especially apparent in times of food crises and can have major public health implications. Scientific results and risk assessments cannot always be easily communicated into simple guidelines and advice that non-scientists like the public or the media can easily understand especially when there is conflicting, uncertain or complex information about a particular food or aspects thereof. The need for improved strategies and tools for communication about food risks and benefits is therefore paramount. The FoodRisC project ("Food Risk Communication - Perceptions and communication of food risks/benefits across Europe: development of effective communication strategies") aims to address this issue. The FoodRisC project will examine consumer perceptions and investigate how people acquire and use information in food domains in order to develop targeted strategies for food communication across Europe.METHODS/DESIGN: This project consists of 6 research work packages which, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies, are focused on development of a framework for investigating food risk/benefit issues across Europe, exploration of the role of new and traditional media in food communication and testing of the framework in order to develop evidence based communication strategies and tools. The main outcome of the FoodRisC project will be a toolkit to enable coherent communication of food risk/benefit messages in Europe. The toolkit will integrate theoretical models and new measurement paradigms as well as building on social marketing approaches around consumer segmentation. Use of the toolkit and guides will assist policy makers, food authorities and other end users in developing common approaches to communicating coherent messages to consumers in Europe.DISCUSSION: The FoodRisC project offers a unique approach to the investigation of food risk/benefit communication. The effective spread of food risk/benefit information will assist initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of food-related illness and disease, reducing the economic impact of food crises and ensuring that confidence in safe and nutritious food is fostered and maintained in Europe.This article is available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund
