    The relationship between place and hallmark event; Malaysian cultural context / Musaddiq Khalil...[et.al]

    The tourism industry has been one of the major key-economic growths in Malaysia. Exploration of different types of events has changed the sector drastically in achieving the high impact factor. Hallmark Event has been one of the best solutions not only to create bigger crowds but to also promote and help the socio-culture around a selected area. This study attempts to enrich the previous semantic-tangle on hallmark event, thus broaden the gap of studies on hallmark event, specifically in Malaysia. The variables chosen to represent the semantic-tangle are loci/space, people/social, event/experience, and hallmark cultural impact. Using a fully quantitative method of research with a correlational research design, this study ought to prove the positive relationship between the variables, thus strengthening the previous gap done by previous researchers which would be applied specifically at Malaysia. Using convenience sampling of 100 visitors on the MAP Festival in 2013, this research managed to generate the descriptive statistic, reliability, validity, and the direct effect of each variables using Pearson Correlation. The results measured were strong relationship showing at least 0.60 positive, 2 tail significant relation between the variables loci/space, people/social, event/experience, and cultural impact of the hallmark event chosen. In gaining the high impact factor on a certain hallmark event in Malaysia, it is highly recommended that authorities would put into considerations of these loci, social, and event factor in determining a promising site specifically in Malaysia

    Isolation of novel para-pentyl phenyl benzoate from Mondia whitei.(Hook.F.) skeels (periplocaceae), its structure, synthesis and neuropharmacological evaluation

    Background: Mondia whitei L. (Hook. F.) Skeels (Periplocaceae) is a medicinal plant used locally in managing pain, fever, loss of appetite and as aphrodiasc in the South-Western states of Nigeria. However, the fruit is consumed habitually in the South-Eastern states of Nigeria, leading to speculation that it may possess some central nervous system effect but which has not been scientifically investigated, hence this study.Methodology: Fresh fruits of Mondia whitei were collected and identified by a taxonomist. They were chopped into small pieces and extracted with absolute ethanol. The crude extract was subjected to various chromatographic techniques to isolate a novel compound whose structure was elucidated from the analysis of the crystal data and by extensive use of spectroscopy. The structure was confirmed by synthesis. The compound was subjected to anxiolytic and sedative activity assay. Computational analysis of the receptor binding event of isolated compound at the gamma amino butyric acid A receptor was also evaluated.Results: The structure of the compound was elucidated as para pentyl phenyl benzoate. The neuropharmacological evaluation of the compound indicated significant (p<0.05) depression of the central nervous system. The binding characteristics of the compound to gamma amino butyric acid A receptors appears to be more favorable than those obtained for gamma amino butyric acid, chlorpromazine, benzamidine, and is comparable with the affinity obtained for pentobarbitone and diazepam.Conclusion: These present data provide evidence for the role of para pentyl phenyl benzoate in the habitual consumption of the fruit as well as its central nervous system activities.Keywords: Mondia whitei, Periplocaceae, isolation and synthesis, sedative and anxiolytic effect and Para pentylphenyl benzoat

    Flexural Rigidity Evaluation of Seismic Performance of Hollow-Core Composite Bridge Columns

    This paper investigates experimentally the seismic behavior of two hollow-core fiber-reinforced polymer-concrete-steel HC-FCS columns under cyclic loading as a cantilever. The typical precast HC-FCS member consists of a concrete wall sandwiched between an outer fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner steel tube. The FRP tube provides continuous confinement for the concrete wall along the height of the column. Five large-scale HC-FCS columns were investigated during this study to estimate the effective flexural (which is an important factor to define the buckling capacity and deflection of such columns) and the effective structural stiffness of the composite columns. These columns have the same geometric properties; the only difference was in the thickness of the inner circular steel tubes and the steel tube embedded length into the footing. A three-dimensional numerical model has been developed using LS_DYNA software for modeling this large scale HC-FCS columns. The nonlinear FE models were designed and validated against experimental results gathered from HC-FCS columns tested under cyclic lateral loading and used to evaluate the effective stiffnessā€™s results. The estimated effective stiffness results that obtained from the experimental work were compared with the FE results. This study revealed that the effective flexural and the effective structural stiffness for the HC-FCS columns need more investigation to be addressed in the standard codes. Since the embedded hollow core steel tube socket connections cannot reach the fully fixed end condition to act as a cantilever member subjected to a lateral load with a fully fixed end condition. Moreover, the effective stiffness results were found to be highly sensitive to the steel tube embedded length and slightly to the unconfined concrete strength

    Characteristics of COVID-19 cases and factors associated with their mortality in Katsina State, Nigeria, April-July 2020

    Introduction: COVID-19 was first detected in Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria on 4 April 2020. We characterized the cases and outlined factors associated with mortality. Methods: We analysed the COVID-19 data downloaded from Surveillance Outbreak Response, Management and Analysis System between 4 April and 31 July 2020. We defined a case as any person with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test within that period. We described the cases in time, person, and place; calculated the crude and adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for factors associated with mortality. Results: We analysed 744 confirmed cases (median age 35, range 1-90), 73% males and 24 deaths (Case fatality rate 3.2%, Attack rate 8.5/100,000). The outbreak affected 31 districts, started in week 14, peaked in week 26, and is ongoing. Highest proportion of cases in the age groups were 26.7% (184) in 30-39, 21.7% (153) in 20-29 years, and 18.3% (129) in 40-49 years. While the highest case fatality rates in the age groups were 35.7% in 70-79, 33.3% in 80-89 years, and 19.4% in 60-69 years. Factors associated with death were cough (AOR: 9.88, 95% CI: 1.29-75.79), age ā‰„60 years (AOR: 18.42, 95% CI: 7.48-45.38), and male sex (AOR: 4.4, 95% CI: 0.98-20.12). Conclusion: Male contacts below 40 years carried the burden of COVID-19. Also, persons 60 years and above, with cough have an increased risk of dying from COVID-19. Risk communication should advocate for use of preventive measures, protection of persons 60 years and above, and consideration of cough as a red-flag sign

    Profiling estrogen, progesterone, and androgen receptors in colorectal cancer in relation to gender, menopausal status, clinical stage, and tumour sidedness

    BackgroundAlthough estrogen (ERĪ±/ERĪ²), progesterone (PGR), and androgen (AR) receptors are pathologically altered in colorectal cancer (CRC), their simultaneous expression within the same cohort of patients was not previously measured.MethodsERĪ±/ERĪ²/PGR/AR proteins were measured in archived paired normal and malignant colon specimens (n =120 patients) by immunohistochemistry, and results were analyzed by gender, age (ā‰¤50 vs. ā‰„60 years), clinical stages (early-stage I/II vs. late-stage III/IV), and anatomical location (right; RSCs vs. left; LSCs). Effects of 17Ī²-estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), and testosterone alone or combined with the specific blockers of ERĪ± (MPP dihydrochloride), ERĪ² (PHTPP), PGR (mifepristone), and AR (bicalutamide) on cell cycle and apoptosis were also measured in the SW480 male and HT29 female CRC cell lines. ResultsERĪ± and AR proteins increased, whilst ERĪ² and PGR declined markedly in malignant specimens. Moreover, male neoplastic tissues showed highest AR expression, whilst ERĪ² and PGR weakest alongside ERĪ± strongest expression was seen in cancerous tissues from women aged ā‰„60 years. Late-stage neoplasms also revealed maximal alterations in the expression of sex steroid receptors. By tumor location, LSCs disclosed significant elevations in ERĪ± with marked declines in PGR compared with RSCs, and ERĪ± strongest alongside PGR weakest expression was detected in advanced LSCs from women aged ā‰„60 years. Late-stage LSCs from females aged ā‰„60 years also showed weakest ERĪ² and strongest AR expression. In contrast, male RSC and LSC tissues exhibited equal ERĪ² and AR expression in all clinical stages. ERĪ± and AR proteins also correlated positively, whereas ERĪ² and PGR inversely, with tumor characteristics. Concomitantly, E2 and P4 monotherapies triggered cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in the SW480 and HT29 cells, and while pre-treatment with ERĪ±-blocker enhanced the effects of E2, ERĪ²-blocker and PGR-blocker suppressed the E2 and P4 anti-cancer actions, respectively. In contrast, treatment with the AR-blocker induced apoptosis, whilst co-treatment with testosterone hindered the effects. ConclusionsThis study advocates that protein expression of sex steroid receptors in malignant tissues could represent prognostic markers, as well as hormonal therapy could provide an alternative strategy against CRC, and their efficacies could be dependent on gender, clinical stage, and tumor location
