Reversing conditional orderings
We analyze some specific aspects concerning conditional orderings and relations among them. To this purpose we define a suitable concept of reversed conditional ordering and prove some related results. In particular we aim to compare the univariate stochastic orderings ≤ st, ≤ hr, and ≤ lr in terms of differences among different notions of conditional orderings. Some applications of our result to the analysis of positive dependence will be detailed. We concentrate attention to the case of a pair of scalar random variables X, Y . Suitable extensions to multivariate cases are possible
Chandra Observations of Arp 220: The Nuclear Source
We present the first results from 60ks of observations of Arp 220 using the
ACIS-S instrument on Chandra. We report the detection of several sources near
the galaxy's nucleus, including a point source with a hard spectrum that is
coincident with the western radio nucleus B. This point source is mildly
absorbed (N_H ~ 3 x 10^22 cm^-2) and has an estimated luminosity of 4 x 10^40
erg/s. In addition, a fainter source may coincide with the eastern nucleus A.
Extended hard X-ray emission in the vicinity raises the total estimated nuclear
2-10 keV X-ray luminosity to 1.2 x 10^41 erg/s, but we cannot rule out a hidden
AGN behind columns exceeding 5 x 10^24 cm^-2. We also detect a peak of soft
X-ray emission to the west of the nucleus, and a hard point source 2.5 kpc from
the nucleus with a luminosity of 6 x 10^39 erg/s.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

Probabilistic Analysis of Facility Location on Random Shortest Path Metrics
The facility location problem is an NP-hard optimization problem. Therefore,
approximation algorithms are often used to solve large instances. Such
algorithms often perform much better than worst-case analysis suggests.
Therefore, probabilistic analysis is a widely used tool to analyze such
algorithms. Most research on probabilistic analysis of NP-hard optimization
problems involving metric spaces, such as the facility location problem, has
been focused on Euclidean instances, and also instances with independent
(random) edge lengths, which are non-metric, have been researched. We would
like to extend this knowledge to other, more general, metrics.
We investigate the facility location problem using random shortest path
metrics. We analyze some probabilistic properties for a simple greedy heuristic
which gives a solution to the facility location problem: opening the
cheapest facilities (with only depending on the facility opening
costs). If the facility opening costs are such that is not too large,
then we show that this heuristic is asymptotically optimal. On the other hand,
for large values of , the analysis becomes more difficult, and we
provide a closed-form expression as upper bound for the expected approximation
ratio. In the special case where all facility opening costs are equal this
closed-form expression reduces to or or even

Chandra Observations of Extended X-ray Emission in Arp 220
We resolve the extended X-ray emission from the prototypical ultraluminous
infrared galaxy Arp 220. Extended, faint edge-brightened, soft X-ray lobes
outside the optical galaxy are observed to a distance of 10 to 15 kpc on each
side of the nuclear region. Bright plumes inside the optical isophotes coincide
with the optical line emission and extend 11 kpc from end to end across the
nucleus. The data for the plumes cannot be fit by a single temperature plasma,
and display a range of temperatures from 0.2 to 1 keV. The plumes emerge from
bright, diffuse circumnuclear emission in the inner 3 kpc centered on the
Halpha peak, which is displaced from the radio nuclei. There is a close
morphological correspondence between the Halpha and soft X-ray emission on all
spatial scales. We interpret the plumes as a starburst-driven superwind, and
discuss two interpretations of the emission from the lobes in the context of

A wide-spectrum language for verification of programs on weak memory models
Modern processors deploy a variety of weak memory models, which for
efficiency reasons may (appear to) execute instructions in an order different
to that specified by the program text. The consequences of instruction
reordering can be complex and subtle, and can impact on ensuring correctness.
Previous work on the semantics of weak memory models has focussed on the
behaviour of assembler-level programs. In this paper we utilise that work to
extract some general principles underlying instruction reordering, and apply
those principles to a wide-spectrum language encompassing abstract data types
as well as low-level assembler code. The goal is to support reasoning about
implementations of data structures for modern processors with respect to an
abstract specification.
Specifically, we define an operational semantics, from which we derive some
properties of program refinement, and encode the semantics in the rewriting
engine Maude as a model-checking tool. The tool is used to validate the
semantics against the behaviour of a set of litmus tests (small assembler
programs) run on hardware, and also to model check implementations of data
structures from the literature against their abstract specifications
The Resistive-Plate WELL with Argon mixtures - a robust gaseous radiation detector
A thin single-element THGEM-based, Resistive-Plate WELL (RPWELL) detector was
operated with 150 GeV/c muon and pion beams in Ne/(5%CH), Ar/(5%CH) and
Ar/(7%CO); signals were recorded with 1 cm square pads and SRS/APV25
electronics. Detection efficiency values greater than 98% were reached in all
the gas mixtures, at average pad multiplicity of 1.2. The use of the
10{\Omega}cm resistive plate resulted in a completely discharge-free
operation also in intense pion beams. The efficiency remained essentially
constant at 98-99% up to fluxes of 10Hz/cm, dropping by a few %
when approaching 10 Hz/cm. These results pave the way towards
cost-effective, robust, efficient, large-scale detectors for a variety of
applications in future particle, astro-particle and applied fields. A potential

Metagenomes of Red Sea Subpopulations Challenge the Use of Marker Genes and Morphology to Assess Trichodesmium Diversity
Trichodesmium are filamentous cyanobacteria of key interest due to their ability to fix carbon and nitrogen within an oligotrophic marine environment. Their blooms consist of a dynamic assemblage of subpopulations and colony morphologies that are hypothesized to occupy unique niches. Here, we assessed the poorly studied diversity of Trichodesmium in the Red Sea, based on metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and hetR gene-based phylotyping. We assembled four non-redundant MAGs from morphologically distinct Trichodesmium colonies (tufts, dense and thin puffs). Trichodesmium thiebautii (puffs) and Trichodesmium erythraeum (tufts) were the dominant species within these morphotypes. While subspecies diversity is present for both T. thiebautii and T. erythraeum, a single T. thiebautii genotype comprised both thin and dense puff morphotypes, and we hypothesize that this phenotypic variation is likely attributed to gene regulation. Additionally, we found the rare non-diazotrophic clade IV and V genotypes, related to Trichodesmium nobis and Trichodesmium miru, respectively that likely occurred as single filaments. The hetR gene phylogeny further indicated that the genotype in clade IV could represent the species Trichodesmium contortum. Importantly, we show the presence of hetR paralogs in Trichodesmium, where two copies of the hetR gene were present within T. thiebautii genomes. This may lead to the overestimation of Trichodesmium diversity as one of the copies misidentified T. thiebautii as Trichodesmium aureum. Taken together, our results highlight the importance of re-assessing Trichodesmium taxonomy while showing the ability of genomics to capture the complex diversity and distribution of Trichodesmium populations
