ZERO TOUCH PROVISIONING OF RESILIENT ETHERNET PROTOCOL RINGS

    Get PDF
When a network device comes online, a fair amount of manual configuration needs to take place before the device is fully functional. Day Zero techniques automate such processes, bringing network devices into a functional state with minimal- to no-touch. However, today a resilient Ethernet protocol (which for convenience may be referred herein to as ‘REP’) does not support Day Zero technologies, since by design there is no support for this requirement at the protocol level. Consequently, current REP ring provisioning requires manual intervention, is time consuming, and involves high operational cost. To address these types of challenges, techniques are presented herein that support configuring REP rings with zero-touch technologies. Aspects of the techniques presented herein introduce a new type-length-value (TLV) encoding scheme to the existing REP Link Status Layer (LSL) protocol data unit (PDU) to carry special flags and Plug and Play (PnP) information

Intrusion recovery for database-backed web applications

    Get PDF
Warp is a system that helps users and administrators of web applications recover from intrusions such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and clickjacking attacks, while preserving legitimate user changes. Warp repairs from an intrusion by rolling back parts of the database to a version before the attack, and replaying subsequent legitimate actions. Warp allows administrators to retroactively patch security vulnerabilities---i.e., apply new security patches to past executions---to recover from intrusions without requiring the administrator to track down or even detect attacks. Warp's time-travel database allows fine-grained rollback of database rows, and enables repair to proceed concurrently with normal operation of a web application. Finally, Warp captures and replays user input at the level of a browser's DOM, to recover from attacks that involve a user's browser. For a web server running MediaWiki, Warp requires no application source code changes to recover from a range of common web application vulnerabilities with minimal user input at a cost of 24--27% in throughput and 2--3.2 GB/day in storage.United States. Influence of large-scale PV on voltage stability of sub-transmission system

    Get PDF
Voltage instability is considered as one of the main threats to secure operation of power systems around the world. Grid connected renewable energy-based generation are deploying in recent years for many economic and environmental reasons. This type of generation could have significant impact on power system voltage stability given the nature of the primary source for generation and the technology used for energy conversion. This paper presents the results of an investigation of static voltage stability in heavily stressed IEEE-14 bus test system with large-scale PV integration. The study focused on the impact of large-scale PV penetrations and dynamic VAr placements on voltage stability of the sub-transmission system. For this study, the test system loads are modeled as the summer peak load of a realistic system. The comparison of STATCOM and SVC performance with large-scale PV is also discussed

Objective: Empyema thoracic is known to have a variable age group affection, causative agents and controversy regarding primarymode of management. The aim of this study was to study the epidemiology, management strategies including investigations and outcomeof empyema in the children. Methods: A prospective study was done on all cases of parapneumonic empyema admitted to our hospitalfrom February 2009 to April 2011. Diagnosis of empyema was confirmed by chest X-ray, pleural fluid analysis or radio-imaging. Allchildren (depending on staging) were treated along with parental antibiotics and chest tube drainage either intrapleural urokinase orsurgery (video assisted thoracoscopy surgery [VATS] or thoracotomy) according to British Thoracic Society guidelines. Results: Amongstudy population, male to female ratio was 1.48:1. The most common age group affected was 1-5 years (mean 4.03 ± 3.30 years). Total31.57% of the cultures were positive. The most common isolated organisms were Streptococci (38.9%) and Staphylococci (44.4%).Out of 57 children, 25 had Stage II of empyema while 32 had Stage III of empyema. There was a significant correlation betweenduration of illness (>7 days) and advancement in the stage of empyema (p < 0.0001). Only one child with Stage II of empyemarequired surgery while remaining all other (24 out of 25) were managed with thoracostomy and intrapleural injection of urokinase.Remaining 32 (18 VATS and 14 thoracotomy) patients with Stage III of empyema underwent primary surgical management. There wasno significant difference in the duration of fever remission, total hospital stay or duration of IV antibiotics in children treated eitherwith intrapleural fibrinolytics or surgical management. Overall outcome of empyema was excellent, mortality was less than 1.5%, withoverwhelming sepsis. Conclusion: Staging of empyema at initiation of treatment helps in proper management of patients. Results withthe use of intrapleural fibrinolytics were promising in the Stage II of empyema. As complications are very few, VATS is a safe procedurein experienced hands

Thesis (M.Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (p. 143-144).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. In this project, a JPEG compliant, low-power dedicated, two-dimensional, Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) core meeting all IBM Softcore requirements is developed. Power is optimized completely at the algorithmic, architectural, and logic levels. The architecture uses row-column decomposition of a fast 1-D algorithm implemented with distributed arithmetic. It features clock gating schemes as well as power-aware schemes that utilize input correlations to dynamically scale down power consumption. This is done by eliminating glitching in the ROM Accumulate (RAC) units to effectively stop unnecessary computation. The core is approximately 180K transistors, runs at a maximum of 100MHz, is synthesized to a .18[mu]m double-well CMOS technology with a 1.8V power supply, and consumes between 63 and 87 mW of power at 100MHz depending on the image data. The thesis explores the algorithmic evaluations, architectural design, development of the C and VHDL models, verification methods, synthesis operations, static timing analysis, design for test compliance, power analysis, and performance comparisons for the development of the core. The work has been completed in the ASIC Digital Cores I department of the IBM Microelectronics Division in Burlington, Vermont as part of the third assignment in the MIT VI-A program.by Rajul R. Get PDF
73-79This study attempts to show the effects and relative contributions of the different fisheries factors affecting the revenues for a sample of commercial offshore trawling vessels operating in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Pakistan. In this study, the level of relative contribution of each determinant is estimated by using the Standard Multiple Linear regression (SMLR) with standardized regression coefficients and correlation methods. The data were collected through the survey questionnaire and direct interviews with the boat owners and fishermen. The estimated standard beta regression coefficient values for the catch (ß1=0.253), horsepower (ß2=0.26), fishing days at sea (ß3=0.316) and skipper or captain’s fishing experience (ß4=0.32), respectively. Similarly, the catch contributes (R2=17.7 %), horsepower (R2=18.2 %), fishing days (R2=22.5 %) and skipper (R2=23 %) on the revenue. Moreover, the correlation values for the catch (r(Revenue, Catch) = 0.70), horsepower (r(Revenue, Horsepower) = 0.698), fishing days (r(Revenue, Fishing Days) = 0.713) and skipper (r(Revenue, Skipper)= 0.718) indicates the strong positive relationship of each variable on the revenue. In conclusion, the skipper fishing experience and individual skills have a very strong influence on the maximizing of total earnings of trawling vessels

In a time of fast growing technology and communication systems, it is very important for the industry and the corporations to develop new contact centre environment technologies for better customer contact requirements. The integration of contact centre (CC) into day-to-day organisational operations represents one of the most promising trends in the 21 st century economy. Whatever the nature or point of contact, customers want a seamless interaction throughout their experience with the company. Customers receive more personalised experience, while the company itself can now provide a consistent message across all customer interactions. Based on the literature studies and the research carried out within the contact centre industry through the case studies, the author identified the customer and advisor behavioural attributes along with demographic, experience and others that later are used to derive the categories. Clustering technique identified the categories for customers and advisors. From the initial set of categories, fuzzy expert system framework was derived which assigned a customer or advisor with the pre-defined set of categories. The thesis has proposed two novel frameworks for categorisation of customer and advisor within contact centres and development of intelligent decision support framework that displays the right amount of information to the advisor at the right time. Furthermore, the frameworks were validated with qualitative expert judgement from the experts at the contact centres and through a simulation approach. The research has developed a novel Soft Computing based fuzzy logic categorisation framework that categorises customer and advisor on the basis of their demographic, experience and behavioural attributes. The study also identifies the behavioural aspects of customer and advisor within CC environment and on the basis of categorisation framework, assigns each customer and advisor to that of a pre-defined category. The research has also proposed an intelligent decision support framework to identify and display the minimum amount of information required by an advisor to serve the customer in CC environment. The performance of the proposed frameworks is analysed through four case studies. In this way this research proposes a fully tested and validated set of categorisation and information requirement frameworks for dealing with customer and advisor and its challenges. The research also identifies future research directions in the relevant areas.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
