    From signal to substance and back: Insights from environmental sound research to auditory display design

    Presented at the 15th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD2009), Copenhagen, Denmark, May 18-22, 2009A persistent concern in the field of auditory display design has been how to effectively use environmental sounds, which are naturally occurring familiar non-speech, non-musical sounds. Environmental sounds represent physical events in the everyday world, and thus they have a semantic content that enables learning and recognition. However, unless used appropriately, their functions in auditory displays may cause problems. One of the main considerations in using environmental sounds as auditory icons is how to ensure the identifiability of the sound sources. The identifiability of an auditory icon depends on both the intrinsic acoustic properties of the sound it represents, and on the semantic fit of the sound to its context, i.e., whether the context is one in which the sound naturally occurs or would be unlikely to occur. Relatively recent research has yielded some insights into both of these factors. A second major consideration is how to use the source properties to represent events in the auditory display. This entails parameterizing the environmental sounds so the acoustics will both relate to source properties familiar to the user and convey meaningful new information to the user. Finally, particular considerations come into play when designing auditory displays for special populations, such as hearing impaired listeners who may not have access to all the acoustic information available to a normal hearing listener, or to elderly or other individuals whose cognitive resources may be diminished. Some guidelines for designing displays for these populations will be outlined

    Use of Integrity Tests May Reduce Workers’ Compensation Losses

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine whether the use of integrity tests in personnel selection would reduce the cost of worker’s compensation claims in organizations representing four different industries. Design/Methodology/Approach: Four large samples representing different industries (total n = 33418) allowed a comparison of employees (total n = 10929) hired once the organization implemented an integrity test as part of the selection system with employees for whom the integrity test was not used (total n = 22489). Test scores of employees making workers compensation claims were compared with those not making claims. In addition, cost of claims was compared across groups. Findings: In all four industries a higher proportion of the unscreened group of employees made worker’s compensation claims than in the screened group and the dollar value per claim was higher in the unscreened group. Implications: Introducing integrity testing into the selection process can result in fewer worker’s compensation claims. Such claims as are made by members of the screened group are for less money than claims by unscreened group members. Originality/Value: Using a research approach that goes beyond traditional validation methods, this study showed that integrity testing can result in substantial savings across multiple industries

    Permeability and conductivity of platelet-reinforced membranes and composites

    We present large scale simulations of the diffusion constant DD of a random composite consisting of aligned platelets with aspect ratio a/b>>1a/b>>1 in a matrix (with diffusion constant D0D_0) and find that D/D0=1/(1+c1x+c2x2)D/D_0 = 1/(1+ c_1 x + c_2 x^2), where x=avf/bx= a v_f/b and vfv_f is the platelet volume fraction. We demonstrate that for large aspect ratio platelets the pair term (x2x^2) dominates suggesting large property enhancements for these materials. However a small amount of face-to-face ordering of the platelets markedly degrades the efficiency of platelet reinforcement.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

    Opposite ends of the same stick? Multi-method test of the dimensionality of individualism and collectivism

It is also among the most controversial, in particular, with regard to the ambiguity of its dimensionality: Some view IND and COL as the opposites of a single continuum, whereas others argue that the two are independent constructs. We explored the issue through seven different tests using original individual-level data from 50 studies and meta-analytic data from 149 empirical publications yielding a total of 295 samplelevel observations that were collected using six established instruments for assessing IND and COL as separate constructs. Results indicated that the dimensionality of IND-COL may depend on (a) the specific instrument used to collect the data, (b) the sample characteristics and the cultural region from which the data were collected, and (c) the level of analysis. We also review inconsistencies, deficiencies, and challenges of conceptualizing IND-COL and provide guidelines for developing and selecting instruments for measuring the construct, and for reporting and meta-analyzing results from this line of research

Conversely sounds that cannot be recognized are not often studied except by electroacoustic music composers. Besides, considerations on recogni- tion of sources might help to address the problem of stimulus selection and categorization of sounds in the context of perception research.     Ambivalence toward men: comparing sexism among Polish, South African and British university students

    This study extends the literature on attitudes toward gender roles by exploring whether the nature of sexism (i.e., benevolence and hostility directed at men) differs among university students from two under-researched countries, Poland (n = 190) and South Africa (n = 188), in a comparison with students in the United Kingdom (n = 166). Based on empirical literature applying Ambivalent Sexism Theory, and in the light of the socio-political context, it was hypothesized that: (1) both hostile and benevolent attitudes toward men in Poland would be more liberal than in South Africa and more conservative than in the United Kingdom, and (2), women would exhibit more hostile but less benevolent attitudes than men in relatively more conservative South Africa. The Ambivalence to Men Inventory was used to measure the two types of sexist attitudes about men. Findings supported the first hypothesis for hostile attitudes and partially for benevolent attitudes. South African and Polish students were more benevolent and hostile to men than British students, and students from South Africa were more hostile than those from Poland. Moreover, as predicted, a significant country-by-gender interaction revealed that South African women had more hostile and less benevolent attitudes to men than South African men. No such gender gap was present in the case of hostile attitudes in Poland and benevolent attitudes in the United Kingdom. Findings are discussed in terms of Ambivalent Sexism Theory and the countries’ socio-cultural context

    Development of the Database for Environmental Sound Research and Application (DESRA): Design, Functionality, and Retrieval Considerations

    Theoretical and applied environmental sounds research is gaining prominence but progress has been hampered by the lack of a comprehensive, high quality, accessible database of environmental sounds. An ongoing project to develop such a resource is described, which is based upon experimental evidence as to the way we listen to sounds in the world. The database will include a large number of sounds produced by different sound sources, with a thorough background for each sound file, including experimentally obtained perceptual data. In this way DESRA can contain a wide variety of acoustic, contextual, semantic, and behavioral information related to an individual sound. It will be accessible on the Internet and will be useful to researchers, engineers, sound designers, and musicians
