    Collaborating to desegregate a black school: how can a low power stakeholder gain voice?.

    This longitudinal action research examines a black school's process of desegregation. Based upon stakeholder, desegregation and collaboration theory, the school's segregated mode was analyzed through understanding its identity as it was conctituted in its stakeholders' network and assessing the incentives to collaborate among different stakeholders. As a way to gain voice, the interventions were orieted towards shifting the schoo's network boundaries and creating personalized relationships with stakeholders around an educational curriculum in wich heterogeneity itself had a function. According to the 'ethics of care' principle, stakeholders shared responsibilities for the needs of all pupils.Desegregation; Processes; Theory;

    From a black to a multicultural school: how to move a system strategy?.

    This study examines the way in which a school with exclusively minority children desegregates itself. Given the educational system in Belgium of competitive schools and parental choice, desegregation implies a system approach with differentiated content of education, a process of involving stakeholders and redefining the school's context.Strategy;

    Werknemers als stakeholders bij directe participatie: rechtvaardigheids- of zorgrelaties?.

    This study examines to what extent the content of participation may cohere with the type of relationship between the different stakeholders. Four participation domains - strategic, planning, social and operational themes – and two types of stakeholder relationship -relationships of justice and care - were being distinguished. Case study research on four participation workgroups indicated that relationships of care occur when operational themes of optimizing a work situation were being discussed. Important aspects of a relationship of care were attention towards needs of the stakeholders, connection among stakeholders and respect for the perspectives of others. In contrast, relationships of justice develop when a strategic theme involving constriction and reduction was the focus of the discussion. Important aspects of relationships of justice were contrasting interests, autonomous and separate orientation and protection of rights. An important condition that influenced the development of relationships of care or justice was leadership style.Case studies; Planning; Studies;

    Severe akathisia as a side effect of metoclopramide

    Get PDF
    Case description A case of severe metoclopramide-induced akathisia in a breast cancer patient being treated with chemotherapy is presented, eventually culminating in hospital admission. In retrospect, this adverse effect was not recognized for several weeks because the prescription had not been properly recorded in the chart, the patient initially denied using the drug, and extensive psychological adjustment difficulties were also present. Conclusion Movement disorders as an adverse effect of metoclopramide have been described on a regular basis over the past decades. Case reports such as this confirm there is under-recognition of adverse effects and emphasize the need to take a comprehensive medication history and recognize well known side effects of medications such as metoclopramide

    В Донецком областном противоопухолевом центре разработан и внедрен способ катетеризации печеночной артерии при паллиативных операциях у больных раком желудка с метастазами в печень. По данному способу пролечено 56 больных резектабельным раком желудка с метастатическим поражением печени, что позволило увеличить продолжительность и улучшить качество жизни больных.У Донецькому обласному протипухлинному центрі розроблено та впроваджено спосіб катетеризації печінкової артерії при паліативних операціях у хворих на рак шлунку з метастазами в печінку. За цим способом проліковано 56 хворих на резектабельний рак шлунку з метастатичним ураженням печінки, що дало змогу збільшити тривалість і поліпшити якість життя хворих.A method of catheterization of hepatic artery at palliative surgery in patients with gastric cancer and metastases to the liver was worked out and introduced at Donetsk Regional Antitumor Center. This method was used in 56 patients with operable cancer of the stomach with metastases to the liver, which allowed increasing the duration and improving the quality of life of the patients

    Kondo Effect on Mesoscopic Scale (Review)

    Following the discovery of the Kondo effect the bulk transport and magnetic behavior of the dilute magnetic alloys have been successfully described. In the last fifteen years new directions have been developed as the study of the systems of reduced dimensions and the artificial atoms so called quantum dots. In this review the first subject is reviewed starting with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) study of a single magnetic impurity. The next subject is the reduction of the amplitude of the Kondo effect in samples of reduced dimension which was explained by the surface magnetic anisotropy which blocks the motion of the integer spin nearby the surface. The electron dephasing and energy relaxation experiments are discussed with the possible explanation including the surface anisotropy, where the situation in cases of integer and half-integer spins is very different. Finally, the present situation of the theory of dynamical structural defects is briefly presented which may lead to two-channel Kondo behavior.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to the JPSJ Special Issue "Kondo effect -- 40 years after the Discovery

    FGF receptor genes and breast cancer susceptibility: results from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium

    Background:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. Genome-wide association studies have identified FGFR2 as a breast cancer susceptibility gene. Common variation in other fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors might also modify risk. We tested this hypothesis by studying genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed SNPs in FGFR1, FGFR3, FGFR4 and FGFRL1 in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. Methods:Data were combined from 49 studies, including 53 835 cases and 50 156 controls, of which 89 050 (46 450 cases and 42 600 controls) were of European ancestry, 12 893 (6269 cases and 6624 controls) of Asian and 2048 (1116 cases and 932 controls) of African ancestry. Associations with risk of breast cancer, overall and by disease sub-type, were assessed using unconditional logistic regression. Results:Little evidence of association with breast cancer risk was observed for SNPs in the FGF receptor genes. The strongest evidence in European women was for rs743682 in FGFR3; the estimated per-allele odds ratio was 1.05 (95 confidence interval=1.02-1.09, P=0.0020), which is substantially lower than that observed for SNPs in FGFR2. Conclusion:Our results suggest that common variants in the other FGF receptors are not associated with risk of breast cancer to the degree observed for FGFR2. © 2014 Cancer Research UK
