What does work, achievement and identity mean to black British women? The lived experience of professional black British women of Jamaican heritage
This study explored the lived experience of six participants who were professional black British women of Jamaican heritage, born in the UK to Jamaican parents of the Windrush Generation. To date, there has been little research within the field of counselling psychology into black existence in the UK. The aim of the research was to make known how the lived experience of these Windrush daughters shaped their relationship with their self and others as illustrated by their relationship to work and achievement. This was a qualitative study from an existential phenomenological perspective, using the critical narrative analysis method (CNA). Two semi-structured interviews were undertaken to capture the participants’ narratives. The participants’ narratives were analysed using critical theories, in particular, black existential philosophy. Analysis of the findings showed that early experience of racism led to self-hatred. However, the 1970s black consciousness movements led many to adopt a new black identity, although others remained conflicted. For all, there was a realisation that their individual worth was linked to the value of all black people. Work and achievement became the means to demonstrate their value and that of all black people. The implication for practice is to recognise the unique tension between the self and other for black women such as these, and that their existence can only be understood through the lens of black existential philosophy
Seismic response to evolving injection at the Rotokawa geothermal field, New Zealand
Catalogs of microseismicity are routinely compiled at geothermal reservoirs and provide valuable insights into reservoir structure and fluid movement. Hypocentral locations are typically used to infer the orientations of structures and constrain the extent of the permeable reservoir. However, frequency-magnitude distributions may contain additional, and underused, information about the distribution of pressure. Here, we present a four-year catalog of seismicity for the Rotokawa geothermal field in the central Taupō Volcanic Zone, New Zealand starting two years after the commissioning of the 140 MWe Nga Awa Purua power station. Using waveform-correlation-based signal detection we double the size of the previous earthquake catalog, refine the location and orientation of two reservoir faults and identify a new structure. We find the rate of seismicity to be insensitive to major changes in injection strategy during the study period, including the injectivity decline and shift of injection away from the dominant injector, RK24. We also map the spatial distribution of the earthquake frequency-magnitude distribution, or b-value, and show that it increases from ∼1.0 to ∼1.5 with increasing depth below the reservoir. As has been proposed at other reservoirs, we infer that these spatial variations reflect the distribution of pressure in the reservoir, where areas of high b-value correspond to areas of high pore-fluid pressure and a broad distribution of activated fractures. This analysis is not routinely conducted by geothermal operators but shows promise for using earthquake b-value as an additional tool for reservoir monitoring and management
Vibration studies of a lightweight three-sided membrane suitable for space application
Vibration studies carried out in a vacuum chamber are reported for a three-sided membrane with inwardly curved edges. Uniform tension was transmitted by thin steel cables encased in the edges. Variation of ambient air pressure from atmospheric to near vacuum resulted in increased response frequencies and amplitudes. The first few vibration modes measured in a near vacuum are shown to be predictable by a finite element structural analysis over a range of applied tension loads. The complicated vibration mode behavior observed during tests at various air pressures is studied analytically with a nonstructural effective air-mass approximation. The membrane structure is a candidate for reflective surfaces in space antennas
Cross-Florida Barge Canal, 1927-1968
The early and later history of the Cross-Florida Barge Canal is said to be divided by the enactment of the River and Harbor Act, signed into law January 21, 1927 by President Calvin Coolidge. This act authorized the secretary of war to make a preliminary examination and survey of the “Waterway from Cumberland Sound, Georgia and Florida, to the Mississippi River,” and it had had the full support of President Harding, Coolidge’s predecessor, who declared himself in favor of the broadest development of the country’s inland waterways. Henry Holland Buckman, who has been called the “father confessor” of the present canal project, described this legislation as “the movement which finally resulted in beginning construction of the canal.
The Molybdenum-Boron Structural Steel
THE production, properties and applications of alloy and special steels form a very wide subject. The decision to
select the comparatively small area of this vast field, covered by the patented' lowcarbon 2 per cent molybdenum-boron steel first described by Bardgett and Reeve2, was
made in the expectation that, during the early stages of improving the status of alloy steels in your country, you would Wish to employ, as far as possible, existing facil-ities for steel production. It, therefore, seemed reason-able that this low-alloy structural steel which can be manufactured in the form of flat products or sections in the same plant which is used for the familiar plain carbon
product and yet possesses a very much higher tensile strength without any sacrifice in other properties should have wide appeal
Our Plea: A Radio Sermon
The sermon that composes this tract was delivered by Jesse P. Sewell over radio broadcasting station WRR from the auditorium of the Pearl and Bryan Streets Church of Christ, Dallas, Texas on April 3, 1927. J.P. Sewell was president emeritus of Abilene Christian College and the regular minister of the Church of Christ in Corsicana, Texas at the time. The sermon also appeared in the Dallas News. It is a plea for a restoration of the New Testament church and loyalty to Christ and His Word.https://digitalcommons.pepperdine.edu/heritage_center/1022/thumbnail.jp
A Choral Conducting Portfolio
This project is a cumulative portfolio of my work as a conductor during the past two years of undergraduate study. It is designed to prepare me for both graduate school auditions and the graduate level work-load. I have evaluated myself as a conductor, filmed videos of myself conducting rehearsals and performances, attended conducting master classes and completed a comprehensive analysis of choral works that I have studied or conducted. I have also included evaluations by mentors or professors administered throughout the course of the project. The project demonstrates by its very nature my growth as a conductor over the course of the project, and the improvement is clearly illustrated through both the outside evaluations and the videos of my conducting
