On Redundancy Elimination Tolerant Scheduling Rules
In (Ferrucci, Pacini and Sessa, 1995) an extended form of resolution, called
Reduced SLD resolution (RSLD), is introduced. In essence, an RSLD derivation is
an SLD derivation such that redundancy elimination from resolvents is performed
after each rewriting step. It is intuitive that redundancy elimination may have
positive effects on derivation process. However, undesiderable effects are also
possible. In particular, as shown in this paper, program termination as well as
completeness of loop checking mechanisms via a given selection rule may be
lost. The study of such effects has led us to an analysis of selection rule
basic concepts, so that we have found convenient to move the attention from
rules of atom selection to rules of atom scheduling. A priority mechanism for
atom scheduling is built, where a priority is assigned to each atom in a
resolvent, and primary importance is given to the event of arrival of new atoms
from the body of the applied clause at rewriting time. This new computational
model proves able to address the study of redundancy elimination effects,
giving at the same time interesting insights into general properties of
selection rules. As a matter of fact, a class of scheduling rules, namely the
specialisation independent ones, is defined in the paper by using not trivial
semantic arguments. As a quite surprising result, specialisation independent
scheduling rules turn out to coincide with a class of rules which have an
immediate structural characterisation (named stack-queue rules). Then we prove
that such scheduling rules are tolerant to redundancy elimination, in the sense
that neither program termination nor completeness of equality loop check is

Credit and banking in a DSGE model of the euro area
This paper studies the role of credit-supply factors in business cycle fluctuations. For this purpose, we introduce an imperfectly competitive banking sector into a DSGE model with financial frictions. Banks issue collateralized loans to both households and firms, obtain funding via deposits and accumulate capital from retained earnings. Margins charged on loans depend on bank capital-to-assets ratios and on the degree of interest rate stickiness. Bank balance-sheet constraints establish a link between the business cycle, which affects bank profits and thus capital, and the supply and cost of loans. The model is estimated with Bayesian techniques using data for the euro area. The analysis delivers the following results. First, the existence of a banking sector partially attenuates the effects of demand shocks, while it helps propagate supply shocks. Second, shocks originating in the banking sector explain the largest share of the fall of output in 2008 in the euro area, while macroeconomic shocks played a limited role. Infectious agents in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases through oxidative stress
Accumulating evidence demonstrates that vascular oxidative stress is a critical feature of atherosclerotic process, potentially triggered by several infectious agents that are considered as risk co-factors for the atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). C. pneumoniae has been shown to upregulate multiple enzymatic systems capable of producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as NADPH oxidase (NOX) and cyclooxygenase in vascular endothelial cells, NOX and cytochrome c oxidase in macrophages as well as nitric oxide synthase and lipoxygenase in platelets contributing to both early and late stages of atherosclerosis. P. gingivalis seems to be markedly involved in the atherosclerotic process as compared to A. actinomycetemcomitans contributing to LDL oxidation and foam cell formation. Particularly interesting is the evidence describing the NLRP3 inflammasome activation as a new molecular mechanism underlying P. gingivalis-induced oxidative stress and inflammation. Amongst viral agents, immunodeficiency virus-1 and hepatitis C virus seem to have a major role in promoting ROS production, contributing, hence, to the early stages of atherosclerosis including endothelial dysfunction and LDL oxidation. In conclusion, oxidative mechanisms activated by several infectious agents during the atherosclerotic process underlying CVDs are very complex and not well-known, remaining, thus, an attractive target for future research
Into Africa : Molecular phylogenetics and historical biogeography of sub-Saharan African woodferns (Dryopteris)
PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Our goal was to infer the phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography of the genus Dryopteris with a focus on taxa in sub-Saharan Africa and neighboring islands. In general, little is known about the relationships between African fern species and their congeners in other geographic regions, and our aim was to determine whether the sub-Saharan African species of Dryopteris are monophyletic and evolved within Africa or arrived there via repeated dispersals into Africa from other regions. METHODS: We obtained sequence data for five chloroplast markers from 214 species of Dryopteris and 18 outgroups. We performed phylogenetic and molecular dating analyses using a Bayesian relaxed clock method in BEAST with fossil and secondary calibration points and estimated ancestral ranges for the genus globally by comparing multiple models in BioGeoBEARS. KEY RESULTS: We found that 22 of 27 accessions of sub-Saharan African Dryopteris belong to a large clade of 31 accessions that also includes taxa from Indian and Atlantic Ocean islands. Additional accessions of taxa from our regions of interest have Asian, Hawaiian, European, or North American species as their closest relatives. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of sub-Saharan African Dryopteris species are descended from a shared common ancestor that dispersed to Africa from Asia approximately 10 Ma. There have been subsequent dispersal events from the African mainland to islands in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, including Madagascar. Several additional species are estimated to have descended from ancestors that reached Africa via separate events over the last roughly 20 million years.Peer reviewe
A Data-informed Public Health Policy-Makers Platform
Hearing loss is a disease exhibiting a growing trend due to the number of factors, including but not limited to the mundane exposure to the noise and ever-increasing amount of older population. In the framework of a public health policymaking process, modeling of the hearing loss disease based on data is a key factor in alleviating the issues related to the disease issuing effective public health policies. First, the paper describes the steps of the data-driven policymaking process. Afterward, a scenario along with the part of the proposed platform, responsible for supporting policymaking are presented. With the aim of demonstrating the capabilities and usability of the platform for the policy-makers, some initial results of preliminary analytics are presented in a framework of a policy-making process. Ultimately, the utility of the approach is validated throughout the results of the survey which was presented to the health system policy-makers professionals involved in the policy development process in Croatia
Total Hemi-overgrowth in Pigmentary Mosaicism of the (Hypomelanosis of) Ito Type: Eight Case Reports.
Pigmentary mosaicism of the (hypomelanosis of) Ito type is an umbrella term, which includes phenotypes characterized by mosaic hypopigmentation in the form of streaks, whorls, patchy, or more bizarre skin configurations (running along the lines of Blaschko): these cutaneous patterns can manifest as an isolated skin disorder (pigmentary mosaicism of the Ito type) or as a complex malformation syndrome in association with extracutaneous anomalies (most often of the musculoskeletal and/or nervous systems) (hypomelanosis of Ito). Affected individuals are anecdotally reported to have also partial or total body hemi-overgrowth (HOG), which often causes moderate to severe complications.We studied the occurrence and features of HOG in the 114 children and adults with mosaic pigmentary disorders of the Ito type diagnosed and followed up (from 2 to 22 years; average follow-up 16 years) at our Institutions.Eight patients (5 M, 3 F; aged 4 to 25 years; median age 16 years) out of the 114 analyzed (7%) fulfilled the criteria for unilateral HOG, with differences in diameter ranging from 0.4 to 4.0 cm (upper limbs) and 1.0 to 9.0 cm (lower limbs). Moreover, among these 8 patients, 5/8 filled in the 75th to 90th percentile for height; 6/8 had associated kyphoscoliosis; and 5/8 showed cognitive delays. No tumour complications were recorded. Overall, 6/8 HOG patients presented with additional (extracutaneous) syndromic manifestations, apart from the HOG (ie, with a clinical phenotype of hypomelanosis of Ito).The present study, which includes children and adults with the longest follow-up so far recorded, confirms the association between pigmentary mosaicism of the Ito type and HOG lowering previous estimates (7% vs 16%) for HOG in the context of mosaic hypopigmentation. A careful examination, looking at subtle to moderate asymmetries and associated complications within the spectrum of these mosaic pigmentary disorders, is recommended

AIMS. Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common genetic cause of premature coronary heart
disease (CHD) due to lifelong elevated plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. This
paper aims to describe the problem of FH underdiagnosis and undertreatment and to promote CHD
prevention providing recommendations for the screening and treatment of patients with FH.
Methods and results. In many countries, less then 1% of FH patients are diagnosed, although the estimated prevalence of this condition is about 1/500 for heterozygous FH and the results of FH screening in a general population of Northern Europe suggest a prevalence of 1/200.
Studies on FH patients agree on a widespread failure to achieve recommended target of LDL-cholesterol and on a 12-fold increased CHD risk. With a theoretical prevalence between 1/500 and 1/200, it
is estimated that 14 to 34 million subjects worldwide have FH.
With evidence of plasma cholesterol ≥8 mmol/L (≥310 mg/dL) in an adult or ≥6 mmol/L (≥230 mg/dL)
in a child, premature CHD, tendon xanthomas, or sudden premature cardiac death, we recommend
the screening for FH of this subject and of all first-degree relatives.
The treatment of a patient with diagnosis of FH should have LDL targets of <3.5 mmol/L (<135 mg/
dL) for children, <2.5 mmol/L (<100 mg/dL) for adults, and <1.8 mmol/L (<70 mg/dL) for adults with
known CHD or diabetes. Beside life-style and dietary modifications, first line therapies are statins,
ezetimibe, and bile acid binding resins in children, and maximal potent statin dose, ezetimibe, bile acid
binding resins, and fibrates in adults. Homozygotes FH and in treatment-resistant heterozygotes FH
with CHD should be referred for LDL-apheresis.
Conclusion. Familial hypercholesterolemia is a common condition that carries a high risk of CHD.
The underdiagnosis and undertreatment of FH require a focused intervention that implements the
screening and promote the early and aggressive treatment of these patients

A novel algorithm for determining the contextual characteristics of movement behaviors by combining accelerometer features and wireless beacons: development and implementation
Background: Unfortunately, global efforts to promote “how much” physical activity people should be undertaking have been largely unsuccessful. Given the difficulty of achieving a sustained lifestyle behavior change, many scientists are re-examining their approaches. One such approach is to focus on understanding the context of the lifestyle behavior (i.e., where, when, and with whom) with a view to identifying promising intervention targets.
Objective: The aim of this study was to develop and implement an innovative algorithm to determine “where” physical activity occurs using proximity sensors coupled with a widely used physical activity monitor.
Methods: A total of 19 Bluetooth beacons were placed in fixed locations within a multilevel, mixed-use building. In addition, 4 receiver-mode sensors were fitted to the wrists of a roving technician who moved throughout the building. The experiment was divided into 4 trials with different walking speeds and dwelling times. The data were analyzed using an original and innovative algorithm based on graph generation and Bayesian filters.
Results: Linear regression models revealed significant correlations between beacon-derived location and ground-truth tracking time, with intraclass correlations suggesting a high goodness of fit (R2=.9780). The algorithm reliably predicted indoor location, and the robustness of the algorithm improved with a longer dwelling time (>100 s; error <10%, R2=.9775). Increased error was observed for transitions between areas due to the device sampling rate, currently limited to 0.1 Hz by the manufacturer.
Conclusions: This study shows that our algorithm can accurately predict the location of an individual within an indoor environment. This novel implementation of “context sensing” will facilitate a wealth of new research questions on promoting healthy behavior change, the optimization of patient care, and efficient health care planning (e.g., patient-clinician flow, patient-clinician interaction)
