    Review of magnetic nanostructures grown by focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID)

    We review the current status of the use of focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) for the growth of magnetic nanostructures. This technique relies on the local dissociation of a precursor gas by means of an electron beam. The most promising results have been obtained using the Co₂(CO)₈ precursor, where the Co content in the grown nanodeposited material can be tailored up to more than 95%. Functional behaviour of these Co nanodeposits has been observed in applications such as arrays of magnetic dots for information storage and catalytic growth, magnetic tips for scanning probe microscopes, nano-Hall sensors for bead detection, nano-actuated magnetomechanical systems and nanowires for domain-wall manipulation. The review also covers interesting results observed in Fe-based and alloyed nanodeposits.     Implementation experience of a patient monitoring solution based on end-to-end standards

It is end-to-end standards-based, using ISO/IEEE 11073 (X73) in the bedside environment and EN13606 to communicate the information to an Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR) server. At the bedside end a plug-and-play sensor network is implemented, which communicates with a gateway that collects the medical information and sends it to a monitoring server. At this point the server transforms the data frame into an EN13606 extract, to be stored on the EHR server.     Proposal of an ISO/IEEE11073 platform for healthcare telemonitoring: plug-and-play solution with new use cases

However, there is still a lack of development in areas such as standardization of the sensor’s communication interface, integration into Electronic Healthcare Record systems or incorporation in ambient-intelligent scenarios. This work identifies a set of use cases involved in the personal monitoring scenario and highlights the related features and functionalities, as well as the integration and implementation difficulties found when these are to be implemented in a system based on the ISO/IEEE11073 (X73) standard. It is part of a cooperative research effort devoted to the development of an end-to-end standards-based telemonitoring solution.     Chemical imaging of phase separated polymer blends by fluorescence microscopy

    Blends of poly(vinylacetate) (PVAc) and poly(cyclohexylmethacrylate) (PCHMA) labeled by copolymerization with 4-methacryloylamine-48-nitrostilbene (Sb), with (1-pyrenylmethyl)methacrylate (Py), or with 3-(methacryloylamine)propyl-N-carbazole (Cbz) were prepared by casting dilute solutions in tetrahydrofurane (THF) or chloroform. Films about 10 mm thick were formed. Phase separation in two types of domains is observed by transmission optical microscopy (TOM) and epifluorescence microscopy (EFM): small craters of 1 to 10 mm placed at the polymer–air interface and larger domains, on the scale of 100 mm. The morphology of samples depends on the composition of the polymer blend and on solvent. The green fluorescence of Sb, the violet of Py, or the blue of Cbz provides imaging of the distribution of PCHMA in the different domains and in the matrix. It is thus observed that (i) superficial craters and large domains are formed mainly by PCHMA and (ii) the matrix is composed of PVAc in films cast from THF and it is a blend of the two polymers, homogeneous at the submicrometric scale, for chloroform. The emission intensity of Py, recorded by microfluorescence spectroscopy (MFS), yields a mapping similar to imaging detection. It is remarkable that in films cast from chloroform, the smaller domains are distributed with a 2D hexatic order disrupted by dislocations and disclinations, whereas in films cast from THF, a larger heterogeneity is found, denoting different mechanisms of solvent evaporation.This work was supported by CICYT (Spain) and Brite-Euran (EU) under Grants PB95-0247 and BE-97-4672, respectively

    Influencia de la información sobre la sostenibilidad del riego en la elección, percepción y disposición a pagar del consumidor de vino (póster)

    Este trabajo evalúa el efecto de añadir información sobre la sostenibilidad del riego en la respuesta del consumidor de vino. Se evaluaron dos formas diferentes de incluir la información en la etiqueta trasera de la botella, mediante un texto y mediante un logo diseñado específicamente con ese fin. El 52% de los 167 consumidores que participaron en el estudio eligió el vino con el logo. El vino con el texto fue elegido por un 38% de los consumidores mientras que únicamente un 10% eligió el control. El principal motivo para elegir los vinos con información sobre la sostenibilidad del riego fue que ambos se percibieron como más respetuosos con el medio ambiente. De hecho, en una escala de sostenibilidad de 9 puntos, estos vinos recibieron puntuaciones cercanas a 7 frente a valores inferiores a 5 del control. Además, el logo hizo que la etiqueta resultase más atractiva al consumidor, mientras que, en el caso del texto, el ahorro de agua fue la segunda causa que más influyó en la elección. Un 70% de los consumidores estuvo dispuesto a pagar entre un 15 y 30% más por el vino regado de forma sostenible respecto al vino control

    The impact of health status and human capital formation on regional performance: Empirical evidence

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of health on growth, assuming that it is a fundamental component of the human capital of a region along with education. Various measures of population health status are used, together with a health index generated by Principal Component Analysis. Potential endogeneity between health and growth is controlled for using instrumental variable regressions and dynamic panel data. The results show a positive effect of a change in health status on regional output and a negative effect of proxy variables for health limitations on regional performance. This corroborates the importance of investing in health along with education with the aim of improving not only the well-being of individuals but the human capital and growth of a region
