Distances and Kinematics of Gould Belt Star-Forming Regions with Gaia DR2 results
We present an analysis of the astrometric results from Gaia second data
release (DR2) to Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in star-forming regions related
to the Gould Belt. These regions are Barnard 59, Lupus 1 to 4, Chamaeleon I and
II, -Chamaeleontis, the Cepheus flare, IC 5146 and Corona Australis.
The mean distance to the YSOs in each region are consistent with earlier
estimations, though a significant improvement to the final errors was obtained.
The mean distances to the star-forming regions were used to fit an ellipsoid of
size pc, and centered at
pc, consistent with recently
determined parameter of the Gould Belt. The mean proper motions were combined
with radial velocities from the literature to obtain the three dimensional
motion of the star-forming regions, which are consistent with a general
expansion of the Gould Belt. We estimate that this expansion is occurring at a
velocity of km s. This is the first time that YSOs motions
are used to investigate the kinematic of the Gould Belt. As an interesting side

Internal and relative motions of the Taurus and Ophiuchus star-forming regions
We investigate the internal and relative motions of the Taurus and Ophiuchus
star-forming regions using a sample of young stars with accurately measured
radial velocities and proper motions. We find no evidence for expansion or
contraction of the Taurus complex, but a clear indication for a global
rotation, resulting in velocity gradients, this suggests a common origin,
possibly related to that of Gould's Belt.Comment: 2 figure
Feed-forward Space Vector Modulation for Single-Phase Multilevel Cascade Converters with any DC voltage ratio
Modulation techniques for multilevel converters
can create distorted output voltages and currents if the DC link
voltages are unbalanced. This situation can be avoided if the
instantaneous DC voltage error is not taken into account in the
modulation process. This paper proposes a feed-forward space
vector modulation method for a single-phase multilevel cascade
converter. Using this modulation technique, the modulated output
voltage of the power converter always generates the reference
determined by the controller even in worst case voltage unbalance
conditions. In addition the possibility of optimizing the DC
voltage ratio between the H-bridges of the power converter is
introduced. Experimental results from a 5kVA prototype are
presented in order to validate the proposed modulation technique
Analysis of the power balance In the cells of a multilevel cascaded H-Bridge converter
Multilevel cascaded H-Bridge converters (CHB)
have been presented as a good solution for high power applications.
In this way, several control and modulation techniques
have been proposed for this power converter topology. In this
paper the steady state power balance in the cells of the single
phase two cell CHB is studied. The capability to be supplied with
active power from the grid or to deliver active power to the grid
in each cell is analyzed according to the dc-link voltages and
the desired ac output voltage value. Limits of the maximum and
minimum input active power for stable operation of the CHB are
addressed. Simulation results are shown to validate the presented
analysis
Krill as a central node for iron cycling in the Southern Ocean
In order to establish the potential role of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) in the recycling of bioactive elements, we have quantified the release of iron, phosphate, and ammonia by these organisms along the Antarctic Peninsula sector of the Southern Ocean. The experimental results suggested that the presence of krill has a significant impact on ambient iron concentrations, as large amounts of this trace element were released by the krill (22-689 nmol Fe g Dry Weight-1 h-1, equivalent to 0.2 to 4.3 nmol Fe L-1 d-1). Half of this iron release occurred within the first hour of the experiment, and differences in iron and phosphate release rates (3.1 to 14.0 μmol PO4 3- g DW-1 h-1) seemed to reflect differences in food availability. These results identify krill as a major node in iron cycling in the Southern Ocean, potentially influencing iron residence time in the upper water column of this region. Earnings management and cultural values
Using theory and empirical data from social psychology to measure for cultural differences between countries, we study the effect of individualism as defined by Hofstede (1980) and egalitarianism as defined by Schwartz (1994, 1999, 2004) on earnings management. We find a significant influence of both cultural measures. In line with Licht et al. (2004), who argue that individualistic societies may be less susceptible to corruption, we find that countries scoring high on individualism tend to have lower levels of earnings management. In addition, we find that egalitarianism, defined as a society's cultural orientation with respect to intolerance for abuses of market and political power, is negatively related with earnings management. Our results are robust to different specifications and controls. The main message of this paper is that besides formal institutions, cultural differences are relevant to explain earnings management behaviour. We think that our work adds to the understanding of the importance of cultural values in managerial behaviour across countries contributing to the literature on earnings management and law and institutions
Model predictive control: a review of its applications in power electronics
Model-based predictive control (MPC) for power converters and drives is a control technique that has gained attention in the research community. The main reason for this is that although MPC presents high computational burden, it can easily handle multivariable case and system constraints and nonlinearities in a very intuitive way. Taking advantage of that, MPC has been successfully used for different applications such as an active front end (AFE), power converters connected to resistor inductor RL loads, uninterruptible power supplies, and high-performance drives for induction machines, among others. This article provides a review of the application of MPC in the power electronics area
The distance to the Serpens South Cluster from H2O masers
In this Letter, we report Very Long Baseline Array observations of 22 GHz
water masers toward the protostar CARMA-6, located at the center of the Serpens
South young cluster. From the astrometric fits to maser spots, we derive a
distance of 440.7+/-3.5 pc for the protostar (1% error). This represents the
best direct distance determination obtained so far for an object this young and
deeply embedded in this highly obscured region. Taking into account depth
effects, we obtain a distance to the cluster of 440.7+/-4.6 pc. Stars visible
in the optical that have astrometric solutions in the Gaia Data Release 3 are,
on the other hand, all located in the periphery of the cluster. Their mean
distance of 437 (+51, -41) pc is consistent within 1-sigma with the value
derived from maser astrometry. As the maser source is just at the center of
Serpens South, we finally solve the ambiguity of the distance to this region
that has prevailed over the years.Comment: Accepted to A&A Letter
Gaia-DR2 confirms VLBA parallaxes in Ophiuchus, Serpens and Aquila
We present Gaia-DR2 astrometry of a sample of YSO candidates in Ophiuchus,
Serpens Main and Serpens South/W40 in the Aquila Rift, which had been mainly
identified by their infrared excess with Spitzer. We compare the Gaia-DR2
parallaxes against published and new parallaxes obtained from our Very Long
Baseline Array (VLBA) program GOBELINS. We obtain consistent results between
Gaia and the VLBA for the mean parallaxes in each of the regions analyzed here.
We see small offsets, when comparing mean values, of a few tens of
micro-arcseconds in the parallaxes, which are either introduced by the Gaia
zero-point error or due to a selection effect by Gaia toward the brightest,
less obscured stars. Gaia-DR2 data alone conclusively places Serpens Main and
Serpens South at the same distance, as we first inferred from VLBA data alone
in a previous publication. Thus, Serpens Main, Serpens South and W40 are all
part of the same complex of molecular clouds, located at a mean distance of
436+/-9 pc. In Ophiuchus, both Gaia and VLBA suggest a small parallax gradient
across the cloud, and the distance changes from 144.2+/-1.3 pc to 138.4+/-2.6
pc when going from L1689 to L1688.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
The Gould's Belt Very Large Array Survey II: The Serpens region
We present deep (Jy) radio continuum observations of the Serpens
molecular cloud, the Serpens south cluster, and the W40 region obtained using
the Very Large Array in its A configuration. We detect a total of 146 sources,
29 of which are young stellar objects (YSOs), 2 are BV stars and 5 more are
associated with phenomena related to YSOs. Based on their radio variability and
spectral index, we propose that about 16 of the remaining 110 unclassified
sources are also YSOs. For approximately 65% of the known YSOs detected here as
radio sources, the emission is most likely non-thermal, and related to stellar
coronal activity. As also recently observed in Ophiuchus, our sample of YSOs
with X-ray counterparts lies below the fiducial G\"udel & Benz relation.
Finally, we analyze the proper motions of 9 sources in the W40 region. This
allows us to better constrain the membership of the radio sources in the
