    Blockchain Mining Games with Pay Forward

    We study the strategic implications that arise from adding one extra option to the miners participating in the bitcoin protocol. We propose that when adding a block, miners also have the ability to pay forward an amount to be collected by the first miner who successfully extends their branch, giving them the power to influence the incentives for mining. We formulate a stochastic game for the study of such incentives and show that with this added option, smaller miners can guarantee that the best response of even substantially more powerful miners is to follow the expected behavior intended by the protocol designer

    Heterogeneous Facility Location without Money

    The study of the facility location problem in the presence of self-interested agents has recently emerged as the benchmark problem in the research on mechanism design without money. In the setting studied in the literature so far, agents are single-parameter in that their type is a single number encoding their position on a real line. We here initiate a more realistic model for several real-life scenarios. Specifically, we propose and analyze heterogeneous facility location without money, a novel model wherein: (i) we have multiple heterogeneous (i.e., serving different purposes) facilities, (ii) agents' locations are disclosed to the mechanism and (iii) agents bid for the set of facilities they are interested in (as opposed to bidding for their position on the network). We study the heterogeneous facility location problem under two different objective functions, namely: social cost (i.e., sum of all agents' costs) and maximum cost. For either objective function, we study the approximation ratio of both deterministic and randomized truthful algorithms under the simplifying assumption that the underlying network topology is a line. For the social cost objective function, we devise an (n-1)-approximate deterministic truthful mechanism and prove a constant approximation lower bound. Furthermore, we devise an optimal and truthful (in expectation) randomized algorithm. As regards the maximum cost objective function, we propose a 3-approximate deterministic strategyproof algorithm, and prove a 3/2 approximation lower bound for deterministic strategyproof mechanisms. Furthermore, we propose a 3/2-approximate randomized strategyproof algorithm and prove a 4/3 approximation lower bound for randomized strategyproof algorithms

    What to Verify for Optimal Truthful Mechanisms without Money

    We aim at identifying a minimal set of conditions under which algorithms with good approximation guarantees are truthful without money. In line with recent literature, we wish to express such a set via verification assumptions, i.e., kind of agents' misbehavior that can be made impossible by the designer. We initiate this research endeavour for the paradigmatic problem in approximate mechanism design without money, facility location. It is known how truthfulness imposes (even severe) losses and how certain notions of verification are unhelpful in this setting; one is thus left powerless to solve this problem satisfactorily in presence of selfish agents. We here address this issue and characterize the minimal set of verification assumptions needed for the truthfulness of optimal algorithms, for both social cost and max cost objective functions. En route, we give a host of novel conceptual and technical contributions ranging from topological notions of verification to a lower bounding technique for truthful mechanisms that connects methods to test truthfulness (i.e., cycle monotonicity) with approximation guarantee

    Towards better models of externalities in sponsored search auctions

    Sponsored Search Auctions (SSAs) arguably represent the problem at the intersection of computer science and economics with the deepest applications in real life. Within the realm of SSAs, the study of the effects that showing one ad has on the other ads, a.k.a. externalities in economics, is of utmost importance and has so far attracted the attention of much research. However, even the basic question of modeling the problem has so far escaped a definitive answer. The popular cascade model is arguably too idealized to really describe the phenomenon yet it allows a good comprehension of the problem. Other models, instead, describe the setting more adequately but are too complex to permit a satisfactory theoretical analysis. In this work, we attempt to get the best of both approaches: firstly, we define a number of general mathematical formulations for the problem in the attempt to have a rich description of externalities in SSAs and, secondly, prove a host of results drawing a nearly complete picture about the computational complexity of the problem. We complement these approximability results with some considerations about mechanism design in our context

    Hallermann–Streiff syndrome with severe bilateral enophthalmos and radiological evidence of silent brain syndrome: a new congenital silent brain syndrome?

    BACKGROUND: We present the first case of a congenital form of silent brain syndrome (SBS) in a young patient affected by Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS) and the surgical management of the associated eyelid anomalies. METHODS: HSS signs were evaluated according to the Francois criteria. Orbital computed tomography (CT) and genetic analysis were performed. An upper eyelid retractor-free recession was performed. Follow-up visits were performed at day 1, weeks 1 and 3, and months 3, 6, 9 (for both eyes), and 12 (for left eye) after surgery. RESULTS: The patient exhibited six of the seven signs of HSS. Orbital CT showed bilateral enophthalmos and upward bowing of the orbital roof with air entrapment under the upper eyelid as previously described for SBS. Genetic analysis showed a 2q polymorphism. During follow-up, the cornea showed absence of epithelial damage and the upper eyelids were lowered symmetrically, with a regular contour. CONCLUSION: Our HSS patient shares features with SBS. We postulate that SBS could include more than one pattern, ie, an acquired form following ventriculoperitoneal shunting and this newly reported congenital form in our HSS patient in whom typical syndromic skull anomalies led to this condition. The surgical treatment has been effective in restoring an appropriate lid level, with good globe apposition and a good cosmetic result

    Differential Control of Notch1 Gene Transcription by Klf4 and Sp3 Transcription Factors in Normal versus Cancer-Derived Keratinocytes

    In specific cell types like keratinocytes, Notch signaling plays an important pro-differentiation and tumor suppressing function, with down-modulation of the Notch1 gene being associated with cancer development. Besides being controlled by p53, little else is known on regulation of Notch1 gene expression in this context. We report here that transcription of this gene is driven by a TATA-less “sharp peak” promoter and that the minimal functional region of this promoter, which extends from the −342 bp position to the initiation codon, is differentially active in normal versus cancer cells. This GC rich region lacks p53 binding sites, but binds Klf4 and Sp3. This finding is likely to be of biological significance, as Klf4 and, to a lesser extent, Sp3 are up-regulated in a number of cancer cells where Notch1 expression is down-modulated, and Klf4 over-expression in normal cells is sufficient to down-modulate Notch1 gene transcription. The combined knock-down of Klf4 and Sp3 was necessary for the reverse effect of increasing Notch1 transcription, consistent with the two factors exerting an overlapping repressor function through their binding to the Notch1 promoter

    A Preliminary Study on Non Contact Thermal Monitoring of Microwave Photonic Systems

    Microwave photonic systems are more susceptible to thermal fluctuations due tothermo-optic effect. In order to stabilize the performance of photonic components, thermal monitoringis achieved by using thermistors placed at any arbitrary location along the component. This workpresents non contact thermography of a fully functional microwave photonic system. The temperatureprofile of printed circuit board (PCB) and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is obtained using FlukeFLIR (A65) camera. We performed Otsu’s thresholding to segment heat centers located across PCB aswell as PIC. The infrared and visible cameras used in this work have different field of view, therefore,after applying morphological methods, we performed image registration to synchronize both visibleand thermal images. We demonstrate this method on the circuit board with active electrical/photonicelements and were able to observe thermal profile of these components

    The orthopedic damage control in pelvic ring fractures: when and why-a multicenter experience of 10 years' treatment

    Abstract Objectives To report our experience of regional referral center for the pelvis. Methods We treated 526 pelvic fractures from January 2004 to December 2014 in three regional reference centers for pelvic trauma. Men were 480 and women were 46 and ages ranged from 16 to 93 years old. Car (65%) and farm (20%) crashes were the most frequent causes of pelvis fractures. Injury severity scores ranged from 9.0 to 75.0, with a mean of 37.5. A defined algorithm for fracture management has been in place and employed to assure adequate resuscitation and fracture care. Results There were 24 deaths in total (4.56%). Sixty three (11.98%) patients underwent angio-embolization for control of bleeding (12 deaths). The average amount of blood transfused was 8.3 IU. Hospital lengths of stay ranged between 1-35 days. Among the 502 alive patients, 55.98% were able to be discharged at home while the remaining 44.02% being transferred to various rehabilitation facilities or extended care facilities. Conclusions The goal of initial management is to restore vital indicators, urinary excretion function and protect the patient from infectious complications. An emergency decisional algorithm helps manage hemodynamic instability. Initial bone and ligament procedures should reduce displacement and make it possible for the patient to wait until his condition is stable enough for definitive surgical fixation

    Is the Thoracolumbar Injury Severity Score (TLISS) still a good base for the education of residents in Orthopaedics and Traumatology?

    ABSTRACT Introduction. Thoracolumbar spinal injuries indicated for surgical intervention specify the necessity of intervention within 24 hours. The traumatologists working in a structure without a Spinal Unit must be able to evaluate such injury and set indications for surgical treatment, that is, nonoperative treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate if Thoracolumbar Injury Severity Score (TLISS) is still a good base for the classification of thoracolumbar spinal injuries and to give a correct indication for nonoperative, that is, surgical treatment. Patients and Methods. Six Orthopaedics and Traumatology residents from Siena (Italy), five Orthopaedics and Traumatology residents from the Clinical Centre of Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and five Orthopaedics and Traumatology residents from the Alta Val d’Elsa Hospital, Siena (Italy) were presented 24 clinical cases from professional literature where the following data were indicated: patient’s age, neurological conditions, description of the injury, mechanism of the injury and radiological findings (RTG, MR). The abovementioned 24 patients were chosen from the literature based on the injuries mostly seen by an orthopaedist with a lack of experience in the problems of spinal column trauma (low energy trauma, with partial or without neurological impairments, with the TLISS score of 4). The residents from the three groups had to classify all patients according to the TLISS score and to define the most appropriate method of treatment-conservative or surgical, and after that, all classifications, as well as the therapeutic decisions, were compared. The statistical methods used in this study include: statistical significance, reliability (P<0.05), the validity of the decision, the percentage of accuracy and Cohen’s kappa coefficient. The best results in evaluation of the mechanism of the injury were demonstrated by the group of doctors from the Orthopaedic Hospital with an accuracy of 78.8% (P<0.05) and with an average correlation (K = 0.598). The best description of the injury was presented by the doctors from Siena with 87% accuracy (P<0.05) and with correlation (K=0.749). The doctors from Siena responded best at evaluating the neurological status with 97.6% accuracy (P<0.05) and with correlation (K=0.936). The assessment of the injury of the PCL residents from Siena was 64.7% accurate (P<0.05) with correlation (K=0.426). The total TLISS score was best calculated by the residents of Siena with 82% accuracy (P<0.05) and correlation (K=0.718). The most appropriate therapeutic decision was made by the residents from Siena with 80.3% accuracy (P<0.05) and with correlation (K =0.707). Conclusion. Currently, the Denis classification and the AO classification are the most widely used classification algorithms for the fractures of thoracolumbar spine but some defects have also been identified in both of them. The value of TLISS evaluation is by the three groups of residents in presented 24 patients from the professional literature. Significant differences in accuracy were found in defining a real damage of the spinal cord at the level of the cauda equina. The evaluation of the integrity of the posterior longitudinal ligament by the radiography is of low accuracy
