    Professor Philippe Rasoanaivo Unveiling the ethnopharmacological potential of the flora of Madagascar: in memory of Philippe Rasoanaivo

    Professor Philippe Rasoanaivo, University of Antananarivo, Madagascar, died on Wednesday, 13 July 2016 from a heart attack, at the age of 70. Professor Rasoanaivo was well known as one of the most distinguished African phytochemists, as also recognised by several international prizes. He won the 2015 Olusegun Obasanjo Prize for using traditional medicine to improve the efficacy of existing drugs for brain disorders and also treating sexual dysfunction among men. He had just been awarded the Prize at the last General Assembly meeting in Kasane, Botswana, in June 2016. Professor Rasoanaivo authored several books and more than 150 international research articles, including some recently published in Natural Product Research. Professor Rasoanaivo developed a unique mixture of scientific knowledge dedicated to the utilisation of endemic plants for ethnobotanical, economic, medicinal and social uses. He wanted to learn everything that was necessary to understand and study the extraordinary flora of his country, obtaining this information to help its people. Throughout his life, countless examples of his remarkableness can easily be found. He was an excellent botanist and, living in a country well known for an exceptional endemic flora, he was able to find and collect many species, and show the world their importance. He was a great ethnopharmacologist, learning the popular uses of plants from the people of his country, and using this information to start a scientific validation of their efficacy. He was a modern researcher: in times of fragmented research, he was able to perform the full range of research on natural products, from chemistry to applied pharmacology. He was successful and organised director of the Institut Malgache de Recherches Appliquées, promoting the cultivation of crops of economic importance. In this obituary, we have provided a synthesis of his important scientific achievements and human qualities, since we had the privilege of working with him and he was able to teach us what modern ethnopharmacology is

    Helicopter Vibratory Loads Alleviation through Combined Action of Trailing-Edge Flap and Variable-Stiffness Devices

    The aim of this paper is the assessment of the capability of controllers based on the combined actuation of flaps and variable-stiffness devices to alleviate helicopter main rotor vibratory hub loads. Trailing-edge flaps are positioned at the rotor blade tip region, whereas variable-stiffness devices are located at the pitch link and at the blade root. Control laws are derived by an optimal control procedure based on the best trade-off between control effectiveness and control effort, under the constraint of satisfaction of the equations governing rotor blade aeroelastic response. The numerical investigation concerns the analysis of performance and robustness of the control techniques developed, through application to a four-bladed helicopter rotor in level flight.     Prognostic role of nutritional status in elderly patients hospitalized for COVID-19: a monocentric study

    BackgroundSymptomatic severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection incidence is higher in the elderly patients. Pre-existing geriatric conditions such as comorbidity and frailty seem related to worse hospital outcomes.AimsTo assess the role of nutritional status as an independent prognostic factor for in-hospital death in elderly patients.MethodsConsecutive elderly patients (age > 65 years) hospitalized for novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were enrolled. Demographics, laboratory and comorbidity data were collected. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Geriatric Nutri-tional Risk Index (GNRI). Uni- and multivariate Cox regression analyses to evaluate predictors for in-hospital death were performed.ResultsOne hundred and nine hospitalized elderly patients (54 male) were consecutively enrolled. At univariate analysis, age (HR 1.045 [CI 1.008\u20131.082]), cognitive impairment (HR 1.949 [CI 1.045\u20133.364]), C-reactive protein (HR 1.004 [CI 1.011\u20131.078]), lactate dehydrogenases (HR 1.003 [CI 1.001\u20131.004]) and GNRI moderate\u2013severe risk category (HR 8.571 [CI 1.096\u201367.031]) were risk factors for in-hospital death, while albumin (HR 0.809 [CI 0.822\u20130.964]), PaO2/FiO2 ratio (HR 0.996 [CI 0.993\u20130.999]) and body mass index (HR 0.875 [CI 0.782\u20130.979]) were protective factors. Kaplan\u2013Meier survival curves showed a significative higher survival in patients without GNRI moderate or severe risk category (p = 0.0013).At multivariate analysis, PaO2/FiO2 ratio (HR 0.993 [CI 0.987\u20130.999], p = 0.046) and GNRI moderate\u2013severe risk category (HR 9.285 [1.183\u201372.879], p = 0.034) were independently associated with in-hospital death.ConclusionNutritional status assessed by GNRI is a significative predictor of survival in elderly patients hospitalized for COVID-19. The association between GNRI and PaO2/FiO2 ratio is a good prognostic model these patients

    Restless legs syndrome: differential diagnosis and management with rotigotine

    RLS is a common sleep disorder with distinctive clinical features. The prevalence of RLS in Caucasians and North Americans ranges from 5% to 10%. However, only some of these subjects (almost the 3% of the general population) report being affected by a frequent and severe form of the sleep disorder. RLS is diagnosed clinically by means of four internationally recognized criteria that summarize the main characteristics of the sleep disorder. Besides the essential criteria, supportive and associated features of RLS have been established by experts in order to help physicians treat patients with doubtful symptoms. Several clinical conditions may mimic this sleep disorder. In order to increase the sensibility and specificity of RLS diagnosis, doctors should perform a meticulous patient history and then an accurate physical and neurological examination. Dopamine agonists are recognized as the preferred first-line treatment for RLS. Rotigotine is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist with selectivity for D1, D2 and D3 receptors. The drug is administered via transdermal patches which release rotigotine for 24 hours. Four clinical trials demonstrated that this compound is able to improve RLS symptomatology with few and moderate adverse events. Head to head trials are required to compare the efficacy and tolerability of rotigotine with other dopamine agonists administered via oral intake. Rotigotine has been approved by the FDA and EMEA for Parkinson’s disease. For the treatment of moderate to severe idiopathic RLS, rotigotine has been recommended for approval by the EMEA and is under review by the FDA

    An Experimental Review of Speaker Diarization methods with application to Two-Speaker Conversational Telephone Speech recordings

    We performed an experimental review of current diarization systems for the conversational telephone speech (CTS) domain. In detail, we considered a total of eight different algorithms belonging to clustering-based, end-to-end neural diarization (EEND), and speech separation guided diarization (SSGD) paradigms. We studied the inference-time computational requirements and diarization accuracy on four CTS datasets with different characteristics and languages. We found that, among all methods considered, EEND-vector clustering (EEND-VC) offers the best trade-off in terms of computing requirements and performance. More in general, EEND models have been found to be lighter and faster in inference compared to clustering-based methods. However, they also require a large amount of diarization-oriented annotated data. In particular EEND-VC performance in our experiments degraded when the dataset size was reduced, whereas self-attentive EEND (SA-EEND) was less affected. We also found that SA-EEND gives less consistent results among all the datasets compared to EEND-VC, with its performance degrading on long conversations with high speech sparsity. Clustering-based diarization systems, and in particular VBx, instead have more consistent performance compared to SA-EEND but are outperformed by EEND-VC. The gap with respect to this latter is reduced when overlap-aware clustering methods are considered. SSGD is the most computationally demanding method, but it could be convenient if speech recognition has to be performed. Its performance is close to SA-EEND but degrades significantly when the training and inference data characteristics are less matched.Comment: 52 pages, 10 figure

    Five star hotels of a Multinational Enterprise in countries of the transitional periphery: A case study in human resources management

    The paper examines the application of human resource management (HRM) practices by a Multinational Enterprise (MNE) whose operations extend from unexplored post-Soviet countries’ transitional periphery economies to advanced economies. By involving hotels of a global luxury US chain in Azerbaijan (Caucasus) and Kyrgyzstan (Central Asia), this in-depth case study focuses on the labour-intensive hospitality industry which, although being relatively neglected by mainstream research, is among the first movers in new markets through the setting of business infrastructure and then leisure tourism. Through Whitley's dimensions of employer–employee interdependence and employee delegation, comparisons highlighted few differences between properties operating in the particular transitional periphery economies and those in a developed country (Germany) owned by the same chain. On the basis of corroboration obtained through a multiple case study methodology, dissimilarities identified were in terms of the flexibility of employment, outsourcing and dismissal procedures; however, despite socio-economic differences across nations, it is argued that luxury hospitality MNEs are able to maintain an overall uniform implementation of HRM policies and practices regardless of locale through a “geocentric” approach as illustrated by Perlmutter (1969) in his seminal work

    Reappraisal of the thalattosuchian crocodylomorph record from the Middle-Upper Jurassic Rosso Ammonitico Veronese of northeastern Italy:Age calibration, new specimens and taphonomic biases

    Despite their extremely rare and fragmentary record, aquatic crocodylomorphs from the Middle to Upper Jurassic (Bajocian-Tithonian) Rosso Ammonitico Veronese (RAV) of northeastern Italy have sparked interest since the late 18th century. Among marine reptiles, Thalattosuchia is by far one of the best represented groups from the RAV units, especially in the Middle Jurassic. Although some specimens have been the subject of multiple studies in recent times, most of them still lack precise stratigraphic assignment and taphonomic assessment, while others remain undescribed. Here we provide a comprehensive revision of the thalattosuchian record from the RAV, alongside the most up-to-date age determination, by means of calcareous nannofossils, when available. Three new metriorhynchoid specimens are described for the first time from the Middle Jurassic of Asiago Plateau (Vicenza province). While the taphonomy of the newly described specimens hampers any taxonomic attribution below superfamily/family level, all three were confidently assigned to a precise interval between the upper Bajocian and the upper Bathonian. This revised record has major paleobiogeographical implications: the new specimens confirm an early origin and distribution of Metriorhynchoidea in the Tethys area and suggest a fast colonization of the open-ocean environment since the upper Bajocian
