Prone to supine surface-based registration for surgical planning in breast cancer treatment

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women worldwide. Many women with breast cancer have their malignant tumors detected before the lesions become clinically palpable. Occult lesions must be marked for the surgeon to ensure that they can be effectively resected. Image-guided wire localization (WGL) is the current standard of care for the excision of non-palpable carcinomas during breast conserving surgery. The integration of the information from multimodal imaging may be especially relevant in surgical planning as complement or an alternative to WGL. The combination of information from images in different positions is especially difficult due to large breast deformation. This work presents a system based on surface registration to localize the lesion in the operative position, starting from a prone MRI study and a surface of the patient in the supine positon. The pre-operative surface from the MRI is registered to the surface obtained in a supine position similar to the intraoperative setting. Triangular meshes have been used to model breast surface in both positions and surfaces are aligned using a Laplacian deformation with fiducials automatically obtained from 3 anatomical references. The evaluation of the methodology has been carried out in 13 cases in which a supine- CT was available achieving an average localization error of 6.7 m

Results obtained from the multiple geodetic observations at Lorca (Murcia, Spain) subsidence area

Trabajo presentado en el AGU (American Geophysical Union) Fall Meeting: Advancing Earth and Space Science, celebrado en Washington D.C. (Estados Unidos), del 10 al 14 de diciembre de 2018The Lorca region, located in the Alto Guadalentín Basin, southern Spain, shows the highest subsidence rates recorded in Europe (about 10 cm/yr). It is produced by a long-term aquifer exploitation (González and Fernández, 2011; Bonì et al., 2014). This process has been studied in various works using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) with images acquired from different satellites (ERS and ENVISAT radar data spanning the 1992 – 2007 period; ALOS PALSAR data for the period 2007–2010; and COSMO-SkyMed data for the period 2011–2012). González et al. (2012) established a relationship between the crustal unloading produced by the groundwater overexploitation and the stress change on the regional active tectonic faults in relation with the May 2008 Lorca earthquake. Those previous studies, based on InSAR and using either ascending or descending acquisitions, assumed that the surface displacement direction is entirely vertical. However, it is important to obtain the complete 3D motion field in order to perform a correct interpretation of the observations, as well as to carry out an advanced numerical model of the aquifer evolution, to be considered for sustainable management plans of groundwater resources and hazard assessments. To achieve this goal, GNSS surveys have been carried out from 2015 to 2018, showing the regional 3D displacement field associated to the exploitation of the aquifer (Prieto et al., 2016; Fernández et al. 2017). Also, simultaneous ascending and descending InSAR observations have been used, along with structural gravimetry (Camacho et al., 2015) and microgravity to study the subsidence area in a more complete geodetic way. We present the results obtained from all those techniques, their comparison, and the interpretation results using different inversion techniques (Tiampo et al., 2011; Camacho et al., 2011, 2015; Cannavò et al., 2015).Peer reviewe

Inherited p40^{phox} deficiency differs from classic chronic granulomatous disease

Biallelic loss-of-function (LOF) mutations of the NCF4 gene, encoding the p40^{phox} subunit of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase, have been described in only 1 patient. We report on 24 p40^{phox}-deficient patients from 12 additional families in 8 countries. These patients display 8 different in-frame or out-of-frame mutations of NCF4 that are homozygous in 11 of the families and compound heterozygous in another. When overexpressed in NB4 neutrophil-like cells and EBV-transformed B cells in vitro, the mutant alleles were found to be LOF, with the exception of the p.R58C and c.120_134del alleles, which were hypomorphic. Particle-induced NADPH oxidase activity was severely impaired in the patients’ neutrophils, whereas PMA-induced dihydrorhodamine-1,2,3 (DHR) oxidation, which is widely used as a diagnostic test for chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), was normal or mildly impaired in the patients. Moreover, the NADPH oxidase activity of EBV-transformed B cells was also severely impaired, whereas that of mononuclear phagocytes was normal. Finally, the killing of Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus hyphae by neutrophils was conserved in these patients, unlike in patients with CGD. The patients suffer from hyperinflammation and peripheral infections, but they do not have any of the invasive bacterial or fungal infections seen in CGD. Inherited p40^{phox} deficiency underlies a distinctive condition, resembling a mild, atypical form of CGD
