Regional Monitoring of Capital Flows and Coordination of Financial Regulation: Stakes and Options for Asia
The ongoing global economic crisis has punished Asian economies severely, despite the fact that its origins derive from outside the region. The global economic crisis was transmitted through real and financial channels, underscoring how vulnerable the region is to external shocks. This paper explores the microeconomic origins of the financial crisis and endeavors to ascertain how crises might be mitigated in the future through better regulation, supervision, and institution-building. Moreover, it makes the case for closer economic cooperation in order to internalize key externalities associated with modern global finance. This cooperation, in turn, should take place at the appropriate level, with incentives for cooperation at the global, regional, and subregional levels. It explores the potential for the creation of an Asian Financial Stability Board and deepening other initiatives in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)+3 and ASEAN forums. However, it stresses that the most important financial reforms in Asia will need to take place at the national level
An exploration into the impact of exposure to community violence and hope on children's perceptions of well-being: a South African perspective
The study aims to explore the relationship between exposure to community
violence, hope, and well-being. More specifically, the study aims to ascertain whether
hope is a stronger predictor of well-being than exposure to violence. Stratified
random sampling was used to select a sample of 566 adolescents aged 14â17 years,
from both high violence and low violence areas in Cape Town, South Africa. A
questionnaire consisting of Snyderâs Childrenâs Hope Scale, the Recent Exposure to
Violence Scale and the KIDSCREEN-52 was used. Data analysis techniques included
descriptive statistics, correlations, and multiple regression. A positive, significant
relationship was found between childrenâs hope and their well-being. Although
exposure to community violence was found to be significantly correlated with wellbeing,
the relationship was negligible. While exposure to community violence and hope
were found to be significant predictors of well-being, hope emerged as a stronger
predictor of child well-being than exposure to community violence.Department of HE and Training approved lis
Prospecting environmental mycobacteria: combined molecular approaches reveal unprecedented diversity
Background: Environmental mycobacteria (EM) include species commonly found in various terrestrial and aquatic environments, encompassing animal and human pathogens in addition to saprophytes. Approximately 150 EM species can be separated into fast and slow growers based on sequence and copy number differences of their 16S rRNA genes. Cultivation methods are not appropriate for diversity studies; few studies have investigated EM diversity in soil despite their importance as potential reservoirs of pathogens and their hypothesized role in masking or blocking M. bovis BCG vaccine.
Methods: We report here the development, optimization and validation of molecular assays targeting the 16S rRNA gene to assess diversity and prevalence of fast and slow growing EM in representative soils from semi tropical and temperate areas. New primer sets were designed also to target uniquely slow growing mycobacteria and used with PCR-DGGE, tag-encoded Titanium amplicon pyrosequencing and quantitative PCR.
Results: PCR-DGGE and pyrosequencing provided a consensus of EM diversity; for example, a high abundance of pyrosequencing reads and DGGE bands corresponded to M. moriokaense, M. colombiense and M. riyadhense. As expected pyrosequencing provided more comprehensive information; additional prevalent species included M. chlorophenolicum, M. neglectum, M. gordonae, M. aemonae. Prevalence of the total Mycobacterium genus in the soil samples ranged from 2.3Ă107 to 2.7Ă108 gene targets gâ1; slow growers prevalence from 2.9Ă105 to 1.2Ă107 cells gâ1.
Conclusions: This combined molecular approach enabled an unprecedented qualitative and quantitative assessment of EM across soil samples. Good concordance was found between methods and the bioinformatics analysis was validated by random resampling. Sequences from most pathogenic groups associated with slow growth were identified in extenso in all soils tested with a specific assay, allowing to unmask them from the Mycobacterium whole genus, in which, as minority members, they would have remained undetected
Major flaws in conflict prevention policies towards Africa : the conceptual deficits of international actorsâ approaches and how to overcome them
Current thinking on African conflicts suffers from misinterpretations oversimplification, lack of focus, lack of conceptual clarity, state-centrism and lack of vision). The paper analyses a variety of the dominant explanations of major international actors and donors, showing how these frequently do not distinguish with sufficient clarity between the âroot causesâ of a conflict, its aggravating factors and its triggers. Specifically, a correct assessment of conflict prolonging (or sustaining) factors is of vital importance in Africaâs lingering confrontations. Broader approaches (e.g. âstructural stabilityâ) offer a better analytical framework than familiar one-dimensional explanations. Moreover, for explaining and dealing with violent conflicts a shift of attention from the nation-state towards the local and sub-regional level is needed.
South African podiatry studentsâ perceptions of feedback given as part of clinical training
Abstract: As part of their clinical training podiatry students spend time in clinical settings treating patients under the supervision of qualified podiatrists. The role and purpose of feedback during such clinical training is to improve studentsâ knowledge, skills and behaviour. Feedback is an integral part of the learning process that should enhance studentsâ clinical learning experiences. However, there is no data on podiatry studentsâ satisfaction or lack thereof about feedback provided during clinical training. The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions of podiatry students on feedback given or received during clinical training..
Polymorphisms in PTK2 are associated with skeletal muscle specific force: an independent replication study
Purpose
The aim of the study was to investigate two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in PTK2 for associations with human muscle strength phenotypes in healthy men.
Methods
Measurement of maximal isometric voluntary knee extension (MVCKE) torque, net MVCKE torque and vastus lateralis (VL) specific force, using established techniques, was completed on 120 Caucasian men (ageâ=â20.6â±â2.3 year; heightâ=â1.79â±â0.06 m; massâ=â75.0â±â10.0 kg; meanâ±âSD). All participants provided either a blood (nâ=â96) or buccal cell sample, from which DNA was isolated and genotyped for the PTK2 rs7843014 A/C and rs7460 A/T SNPs using real-time polymerase chain reaction.
Results
Genotype frequencies for both SNPs were in HardyâWeinberg equilibrium (X 2ââ€â1.661, Pââ„â0.436). VL specific force was 8.3% higher in rs7843014 AA homozygotes than C-allele carriers (Pâ=â0.017) and 5.4% higher in rs7460 AA homozygotes than T-allele carriers (Pâ=â0.029). No associations between either SNP and net MVCKE torque (Pââ„â0.094) or peak MVCKE torque (Pââ„â0.107) were observed.
Conclusions
These findings identify a genetic contribution to the inter-individual variability within muscle specific force and provides the first independent replication, in a larger Caucasian cohort, of an association between these PTK2 SNPs and muscle specific force, thus extending our understanding of the influence of genetic variation on the intrinsic strength of muscle.Published versio
