    The solo female Asian tourist

    This qualitative study explores the travel motivations and experiences of solo female Asian tourists. Data were collected from ten in-depth interviews with a focus on Asian women’s travel motivations, experiences and constraints. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Resistance was found to be an important factor as in order to travel solo, the participants had to resist sociocultural expectations for Asian women’s behaviour. Sexualized male attention was also found to be an important constraint. Suffering harassment from men in the destinations they visited, the women became fearful of attack or abuse, and this limited their use of the leisure space offered at the destination. Being Asian was felt to further increase their vulnerability. None of these factors however deterred the women from future solo travel plans

    What makes brands achieve iconic status?

    We propose that brands do not achieve iconic status by chance. This article focuses on how brands manage iconic status effectively. Drawing on an exploratory study of iconic brands, we identify a brand's ability to inspire consumers and connect with them on a personal level as well as its visual identity and presence in consumers' mind as critical elements of brand status. Consumers' perceptions of a sample of brands were investigated through in-depth interviews, followed by the examination of these brands' activities through case-study analyses. The alignment between brand strategies and the relevant features highlighted by consumers was then assessed. A comprehensive framework for achieving iconicity is presented and discussed.Working Pape

    A Longitudinal Study of Streptococcus mutans Colonization in Infants after Tooth Eruption

    We previously reported that, before tooth eruption, over one-half of infants aged 6 mos were already infected with Streptococcus mutans. The aim of this investigation was to determine the colonization of S. mutans after tooth eruption in the same cohort of 111 infants (35 pre-term, 76 full-term). Our results showed that S. mutans colonization increased with increasing age, so that by 24 mos of age, 84% harbored the bacteria (p 10(5) CFU/mL (p < 0.02). In contrast, non-colonization of S. mutans was associated with toothbrushing (p < 0.03) and multiple courses of antibiotics (p < 0.001). Analysis of our data establishes the timing of S. mutans colonization in children from birth to 24 mos of age

    Longitudinal Current Dissipation in Bose-glass Superconductors

    A scaling theory of vortex motion in Bose glass superconductors with currents parallel to the common direction of the magnetic field and columnar defects is presented. Above the Bose-glass transition the longitudinal DC resistivity ρ(T)(TTBG)νz\rho_{||}(T)\sim (T-T_{BG})^{\nu' z'} vanishes much faster than the corresponding transverse resistivity ρ(T)(TTBG)ν(z2)\rho_{\perp}(T)\sim (T-T_{BG})^{\nu' (z'-2)}, thus {\it reversing} the usual anisotropy of electrical transport in the normal state of layered superconductors. In the presence of a current J\bf J at an angle θJ\theta_J with the common field and columnar defect axis, the electric field angle θE\theta_E approaches π/2\pi/2 as TTBG+T\rightarrow T_{BG}^+. Scaling also predicts the behavior of penetration depths for the AC currents as TTBGT\rightarrow T_{BG}^-, and implies a {\it jump discontinuity} at TBGT_{BG} in the superfluid density describing transport parallel to the columns.Comment: 5 pages, revte

    Innate cellular sources of interleukin-17A regulate macrophage accumulation in cigarette smoke-induced lung inflammation in mice

    Cigarette smoke (CS) is the major cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Interleukin-17A (IL-17A) is a pivotal cytokine that regulates lung immunity and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate how IL-17A regulates CS-induced lung inflammation in vivo . IL-17A KO mice and neutralisation of IL-17A in WT mice reduced macrophage and neutrophil recruitment and CCL2, CCL3 and MMP-12 mRNA expression in response to acute CS exposure. IL-17A expression was increased in NOD SCID mice with non-functional B and T cells over a 4 week CS exposure period, where macrophages accumulated to the same extent as WT mice. Gene expression analysis by QPCR of isolated immune cell subsets detected increased levels of IL-17A transcript in macrophages, neutrophils and NK/NKT cells in the lungs of CS-exposed mice. In order to further explore the relative contribution of innate immune cellular sources, intracellular IL-17A staining was performed. Here, we demonstrate that CS exposure primes NK, NKT and γδ T cells to produce more IL-17A protein and CS alone increased the frequency of IL17+ γδ T cells in the lung, whereas IL-17A protein was not detected in macrophages and neutrophils. Our data suggest that activation of innate cellular sources of IL-17A is an essential mediator of macrophage accumulation in CS-exposed lungs. Targeting non-conventional T cell sources of IL-17A may offer an alternative strategy to reduce pathogenic macrophages in COPD

    Melting of Flux Lines in an Alternating Parallel Current

    We use a Langevin equation to examine the dynamics and fluctuations of a flux line (FL) in the presence of an {\it alternating longitudinal current} J(ω)J_{\parallel}(\omega). The magnus and dissipative forces are equated to those resulting from line tension, confinement in a harmonic cage by neighboring FLs, parallel current, and noise. The resulting mean-square FL fluctuations are calculated {\it exactly}, and a Lindemann criterion is then used to obtain a nonequilibrium `phase diagram' as a function of the magnitude and frequency of J(ω)J_{\parallel}(\omega). For zero frequency, the melting temperature of the mixed phase (a lattice, or the putative "Bose" or "Bragg Glass") vanishes at a limiting current. However, for any finite frequency, there is a non-zero melting temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Forecasting daily attendances at an emergency department to aid resource planning

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Accurate forecasting of emergency department (ED) attendances can be a valuable tool for micro and macro level planning.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data for analysis was the counts of daily patient attendances at the ED of an acute care regional general hospital from July 2005 to Mar 2008. Patients were stratified into three acuity categories; i.e. P1, P2 and P3, with P1 being the most acute and P3 being the least acute. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) method was separately applied to each of the three acuity categories and total patient attendances. Independent variables included in the model were public holiday (yes or no), ambient air quality measured by pollution standard index (PSI), daily ambient average temperature and daily relative humidity. The seasonal components of weekly and yearly periodicities in the time series of daily attendances were also studied. Univariate analysis by t-tests and multivariate time series analysis were carried out in SPSS version 15.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>By time series analyses, P1 attendances did not show any weekly or yearly periodicity and was only predicted by ambient air quality of PSI > 50. P2 and total attendances showed weekly periodicities, and were also significantly predicted by public holiday. P3 attendances were significantly correlated with day of the week, month of the year, public holiday, and ambient air quality of PSI > 50.</p> <p>After applying the developed models to validate the forecast, the MAPE of prediction by the models were 16.8%, 6.7%, 8.6% and 4.8% for P1, P2, P3 and total attendances, respectively. The models were able to account for most of the significant autocorrelations present in the data.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Time series analysis has been shown to provide a useful, readily available tool for predicting emergency department workload that can be used to plan staff roster and resource planning.</p

    Defect-unbinding and the Bose-glass transition in layered superconductors

    The low-field Bose-glass transition temperature in heavy-ion irradiated Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+d increases progressively with increasing density of irradiation-induced columnar defects, but saturates for densities in excess of 1.5 x10^9 cm^-2. The maximum Bose-glass temperature corresponds to that above which diffusion of two-dimensional pancake vortices between different vortex lines becomes possible, and above which the ``line-like'' character of vortices is lost. We develop a description of the Bose-glass line that is in excellent quantitative agreement with the experimental line obtained for widely different values of track density and material parameters.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.
