Advertisement is a medium to deliver messages to people with the goal to influence them to use certain products. Semiotics is applied to develop a correlation within the element used in advertisement. In this study, the writer chooses the television advertisement of Coca Cola “ Reason to Believe: Indonesian Version” as the subject to be analyzed using semiotic study based on Peirce's theory. Semiotic approach is employed in interpreting the sign, symbol, icon, and index in television advertisements. This study aims to identify: (1) the semiotic signs found in the Coca Cola advertisement, and (2) the interpretation of semiotic signs in the Coca Cola advertisement. This study is qualitative in the form of document analysis. The data are 20 scenes in the Coca Cola “Reason to Believe : Indonesian Version” TV advertisements. The result of this research shows that each advertisement contains semiotic signs such as symbol, icon and index. There are 20 symbols, 46 icons, and 16 index. Icon is mostly used rather than symbol and index. Text are provides as symbol in most scenes. The text use for emphazing the condition of each scene.Suggestion is made for next researchers to choose the signs of the advertisement from other media sources like radio, newspaper, or the internet, to obtain various results. Next researchers can also conduct further studies by seeing people's interpretation on certain advertisements

Pesticide exposure and gender discrepancy in breast cancer

OBJECTIVE: It is biologically plausible that occupational and environmental pesticide exposure may contribute to breast cancer risk. Persistent chemical compounds, such as pesticides, tend to be lipophilic and are detected in human breast milk and adipose tissue. Therefore, the present systematic review ims to clarify the gender difference in breast cancer concerning pesticide exposure.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 70 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. RESULTS: From the studies analyzed, it was observed that exposure to pesticides could be a risk factor for breast cancer in women, in particular in young women and in women who experienced menarche at a young age. In contrast, no association was found for breast cancer in men. Female breast cancer is correlated with estrogen receptor-negative tumor characteristics. Breast cancer in men was no correlated with pesticide exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Breast cancer in women has been linked to estrogen receptor positivity, but this positivity appears to be inversely related to fertility. The estrogen-like effects of organochlorine pesticides could be the cause of the observed gender differences

Straining at work and its relationship with personality profiles and individual consequences in healthcare workers (HCWs)

Straining is an attenuated form of mobbing, in which the continuity of vexatious actions is not driven by a discriminatory intent. With the objective of testing the possible moderating role of personality in the relationship between perceptions about straining at work and individual consequences, a correlational design research involved 374 healthcare workers (HCWs) from two Italian hospitals. The following questionnaires were administered: (1) Short Negative Acts Questionnaire (S‐NAQ), to assess discriminative actions at work); (2) the Italian version of the Big Five Inventory (BFI‐10 scale), to assess personality factors; (3) Occupational Stress Indicator (OSI), to measure psychological and physical health. Regression analysis and Structural Equation Models (SEM) were computed in order to test the relationships between variables. Perceived straining showed significant correlations with both psychological and physical health. Conscientiousness was inversely proportional to work‐related bullying (WB), as agreeableness was to personal bullying (PB). Emotional stability was negatively correlated with all the three component scales of S‐NAQ: WB, PB, and social bullying. The results seem to confirm that straining perceptions especially elicit, through emotional stability, psychological consequences. As regards the role of emotional stability in risk perceptions, it seems management has to pay thorough attention to personal factors in organizational perceptions and to straining actions

Voices unheard : employee voice in the new century

    Get PDF
The concept of employee voice has attracted considerable attention in research since the 1980s primarily in the fields of Employment Relations/Human Resource Management (ER/HRM) and Organisational Behaviour (OB). Each of these disciplines focuses on different aspects of employee voice, the former examining the mechanisms for employees to have \u27a say\u27 in organisational decision-making (Freeman, Boxall, & Haynes, 2007; Gollan, Kaufman, Taras, & Wilkinson, 2015; Wilkinson & Fay, 2011) and the latter considering voice as an \u27extra-role upward communication behaviour\u27 (Morrison, 2014, p. 174) with the intent to improve organizational functioning. The purpose of voice is seen by each of these disciplines in a different way. ER/HRM perspectives are underpinned by the assumption that it is a fundamental democratic right for workers to extend a degree of control over managerial decision-making within an organisation (Kaufman, 2015; Wilkinson, Gollan, Lewin, & Marchington, 2010). Thus, everyone should have a voice and a lack of opportunities to express that voice may adversely affect workers\u27 dignity. In contrast, OB perspectives are underpinned more by a concern with organisational improvements, therefore leaving it much more to managerial discretion to reduce or change existing voice arrangements due to, for example, an economic downturn (Barry & Wilkinson, 2016)

Androgen deprivation therapy affects BCL-2 expression in human prostate cancer

    No full text
BCL-2 is an integral protein of the external mitochondrial membrane that inhibits cell apoptotic death. We investigated the effect of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) on BCL-2 expression in prostate cancer tissues. We studied BCL-2 expression in vivo in prostate cancer tissues obtained from patients who underwent radical prostatectomy after neoadjuvant ADT, by Northern and Western blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry. Moreover, gene transcriptional activity was also measured by nuclear run-on experiments. We demonstrated an increase of BCL-2 mRNA expression in patients who underwent neoadjuvant ADT for 1 month in comparison to patients who had not received any therapy. Moreover, we demonstrated that there were no significant modifications of BCL-2 mRNA levels in patients who underwent neoadjuvant ADT for 3 and 6 months. Furthermore, BCL-2 protein levels in patients who underwent neoadjuvant ADT for 1 month were upregulated in comparison to patients who had not received any therapy. Immunohistochemical analysis showed a strong positivity of prostate cells depending on ADT administration for 1 month. Finally, transcriptional activity was not modified in patients who underwent neoadjuvant ADT, suggesting the absence of hormonal regulation on BCL-2 gene expression at the transcriptional level. Our data show that short-term administration of ADT interferes with BCL-2 expression, suggesting that androgen-mediated mechanisms may act through BCL-2-mediated apoptotic pathways. Moreover, since short-term ADT administration does not interfere with BCL-2 expression at the transcriptional level, the androgen-mediated mechanisms involving BCL-2 pathways, probably act at the post-transcriptional level
