    Mordell-Weil Lattice via String Junctions

    Get PDF
We analyze the structure of singularities, Mordell-Weil lattices and torsions of a rational elliptic surface using string junctions in the background of 12 7-branes. The classification of the Mordell-Weil lattices due to Oguiso-Shioda is reproduced in terms of the junction lattice. In this analysis an important role played by the global structure of the surface is observed. It is then found that the torsions in the Mordell-Weil group are generated by the fraction of loop junctions which represent the imaginary roots of the loop algebra E^9\hat E_9. From the structure of the Mordell-Weil lattice we find 7-brane configurations which support non-BPS junctions carrying conserved Abelian charges.Comment: 35 pages, Latex, 3 figure

A SEEMINGLY UNRELETED REGRESSION ANALYSIS ON THE TRADING BEHAVIOR OF MUTUAL FUND INVESTORS

This paper provides a comprehensive investigation on the causality relationship between fund performance and trading flows. We analyze if investors behave asymmetrically in fund purchasing and selling by seemingly unrelated regression which comprises several individual relationships that are linked by the fact that their disturbances or the error terms are correlated. The empirical result shows a significantly negative relationship between fund performance and purchase flows for domestic funds. The magnitude of domestic funds redemption negatively affects current return, but not for international funds. As previousfund return positively affects current net flows, the further lagged performances have no significant impact on the trading flows, revealing that fund investors are sensitive only to short-term past performance. Most importantly, while negative fund performance leads to the increases in redemption, positive performance contrarily leads to the decreases in purchase. The evidences strongly indicate an asymmetry behavior of fund investors in the return-purchase causality relations

    Affine 7-brane Backgrounds and Five-Dimensional ENE_N Theories on S1S^1

Elliptic curves for the 7-brane configurations realizing the affine Lie algebras \wh E_n (1n8)(1 \leq n \leq 8) and \wh{\wt E}_n (n=0,1)(n=0,1) are systematically derived from the cubic equation for a rational elliptic surface. It is then shown that the \wh E_n 7-branes describe the discriminant locus of the elliptic curves for five-dimensional (5D) N=1 EnE_n theories compactified on a circle. This is in accordance with a recent construction of 5D N=1 EnE_n theories on the IIB 5-brane web with 7-branes, and indicates the validity of the D3 probe picture for 5D EnE_n theories on \bR^4 \times S^1. Using the \wh E_n curves we also study the compactification of 5D EnE_n theories to four dimensions.Comment: 23 pages, Latex, no figures, some statements clarified, typos corrected, references and note adde

Localized tachyon condensation and G-parity conservation

We study the condensation of localized tachyon in non-supersymmetric orbifold {\C^2/\Z_n}. We first show that the G-parities of chiral primaries are preserved under the condensation of localized tachyon(CLT) given by the chiral primaries. Using this, we finalize the proof of the conjecture that the lowest-tachyon-mass-squared increases under CLT at the level of type II string with full consideration of GSO projection. We also show the equivalence between the GG-parity given by G=[jk1/n]+[jk2/n]G=[jk_1/n]+ [jk_2/n] coming from partition function and that given by G={jk1/n}k2{jk2/n}k1G=\{jk_1/n\}k_2 -\{jk_2/n\}k_1 coming from the monomial construction for the chiral primaires in the dual mirror picture.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, final form to appear in JHE

Advanced Glycation End Products Induce PeroxisomeProliferator-Activated Receptor c Down-Regulation-Related Inflammatory Signals in Human Chondrocytesvia Toll-Like Receptor-4 and Receptor for AdvancedGlycation End Products

Accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in joints is important in the development of cartilage destruction and damage in age-related osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and receptor for AGEs (RAGE) in AGEs-induced inflammatory signalings in human OA chondrocytes. Human articular chondrocytes were isolated and cultured. The productions of metalloproteinase-13 and interleukin-6 were quantified using the specific ELISA kits. The expressions of related signaling proteins were determined by Western blotting. Our results showed that AGEs enhanced the productions of interleukin-6 and metalloproteinase-13 and the expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 and high-mobility group protein B1 and resulted in the reduction of collagen II expression in human OA chondrocytes. AGEs could also activate nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation. Stimulation of human OA chondrocytes with AGEs significantly induced the up-regulation of TLR4 and RAGE expressions and the down-regulation of PPARγ expression in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Neutralizing antibodies of TLR4 and RAGE effectively reversed the AGEs-induced inflammatory signalings and PPARγ down-regulation. PPARγ agonist pioglitazone could also reverse the AGEs-increased inflammatory signalings. Specific inhibitors for p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases, c-Jun N-terminal kinase and NF-κB suppressed AGEs-induced PPARγ down-regulation and reduction of collagen II expression. Taken together, these findings suggest that AGEs induce PPARγ down-regulation-mediated inflammatory signalings and reduction of collagen II expression in human OA chondrocytes via TLR4 and RAGE, which may play a crucial role in the development of osteoarthritis pathogenesis induced by AGEs accumulation

Activity of Cinnamomum Osmophloeum Leaf Essential Oil Against Anopheles gambiae s.s

The increasing status of insecticide resistant mosquitoes in sub-Saharan Africa is a threatening alert to the existing control efforts. All sibling species of An. gambiae complex have evolved insecticide resistance in wild populations for different approved classes of the insecticides currently in use in the field. An alternative compound for vector control is absolutely urgently needed. In this study, the larvicidal activity and chemical composition of the Cinnamomum osmophloeum leaf essential oils were investigated. C. osmophloeum leaf essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus for 6 hours, and their chemical compositions identified using GC-MS. These oils were evaluated against An. gambiae s.s. in both laboratory and semi-field situations. The WHO test procedures for monitoring larvicidal efficacy in malaria vectors were used. The composition of C. osmophloeum leaf essential oil has been found to have 11 active compounds. The most abundant compound was trans-cinnamaldehyde (70.20%) and the least abundant was caryophyllene oxide (0.08%). The larvicidal activity was found to be dosage and time dependant both in laboratory and semi-field environments with mortality ranging from 0% to 100%. The LC50 value was found to vary from 22.18 to 58.15 µg/ml in the laboratory while in semi-field environments it was 11.91 to 63.63 µg/ml. The LC90 value was found to range between 57.71 to 91.54 µg/ml in the laboratory while in semi-field environments was 52.07 to 173.77 µg/ml. Mortality ranged from 13% to 100% in the laboratory while in semi-field environments it ranged between 43% to 100% within mortality recording time intervals of 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours. The larvicidal activity shown by C. osmophloeum leaf essential oil is a promising alternative to existing larvicides or to be incorporated in integrated larval source management compounds for An. gambiae s.s control. The efficacy observed in this study is attributed to both major and minor compounds of the essential oils. \u

A dual gravity study of the 2+1D compact U(1) gauge theory coupled with strongly interacting matter fields

We consider the D2-brane probe action in the gravity background dual to N coincident Dp-branes by treating the separation between the D2- and Dp-branes as a nondynamical parameter for p=2,4,6p=2,4,6. The gauge coupling, the core size of a non-BPS instanton and the mass gap of the compact U(1) gauge theory in the D2-brane are determined as a function of the separation in the type IIA gravity region. The results are interpreted in terms of the 2+1D U(1) gauge theory coupled with the matter fields which are also strongly coupled with the p+1D SU(N) gauge field. It is shown that strong coupling of the matter fields to the SU(N) gauge field can drastically modify their screening of the U(1) gauge field. The non-perturbative dependence of the U(1) gauge coupling on the energy scale is obtained.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures; revised introduction in v

Phantom Accretion onto the Schwarzschild de-Sitter Black Hole

We deal with phantom energy accretion onto the Schwarzschild de-Sitter black hole. The energy flux conservation, relativistic Bernoulli equation and mass flux conservation equation are formulated to discuss the phantom accretion. We discuss the conditions for critical accretion. It is found that mass of the black hole decreases due to phantom accretion. There exist two critical points which lie in the exterior of horizons (black hole and cosmological horizons). The results for the phantom energy accretion onto the Schwarzschild black hole can be recovered by taking Λ0\Lambda\rightarrow0.Comment: 9 pages, no figur
