Background/aims: To report the outcome of primary radiotherapy in patients with progressive optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM). Methods: The clinical records of all patients were reviewed in a retrospective, observational, multicentre study. Results: Thirty-four consecutive patients were included. Twenty-six women and eight men received conventional or stereotactic fractionated radiotherapy, and were followed for a median 58 (range 51–156) months. Fourteen eyes (41%) showed improved visual acuity of at least two lines on the Snellen chart. In 17 (50%) eyes, the vision stabilised, while deterioration was noted in three eyes (9%). The visual outcome was not associated with age at the time of radiotherapy (p=0.83), sex (p=0.43), visual acuity at the time of presentation (p=0.22) or type of radiotherapy (p=0.35). Optic disc swelling was associated with improved visual acuity (p<0.01) and 4/11 patients with optic atrophy also showed improvement. Long-term complications were dry eyes in five patients, cataracts in three, and mild radiation retinopathy in four. Conclusion: Primary radiotherapy for patients with ONSM is associated with long-term improvement of visual acuity and few adverse effects.Peerooz Saeed, Leo Blank, Dinesh Selva, John G. A Novel Method for the Computation of the Deterministic Maximum Likelihood Estimator of Multiple Real Sinusoids

In this manuscript a novel computationally efficient method for implementing the Deter- ministic Maximum Likelihood estimator of multiple superimposed real sinusoids is derived. This method is an adaptation of a recently proposed algorithm for the estimation of undamped exponentials and offers two significant advantages in terms of complexity with respect to various alternatives available in the technical literature. First, the dependence of the computational complexity on the snapshot length is the same as that of the Fast Fourier Transform. Consequently, increasing the snapshot length does not have a substantial impact on the overall computational burden. Second, the proposed method exploits the ability of the periodogram estimator to coarsely locate the global maximum of the Deterministic Maximum Likelihood cost function, thereby eliminating the need for a global search on this last function. Our numerical results show that it achieves a better accuracy-complexity trade-off than various estimators available in the literature

This study evaluated the efficacy of the modified endoscopic Lothrop procedure (MELP) for complicated frontal mucoceles and endoscopic marsupialization for other paranasal sinus mucoceles. It was a retrospective, consecutive case review of sinus mucoceles treated endoscopically by a single surgeon over a four-year period (1998-2002). There were 41 mucoceles in 28 patients, including 24 frontal, eight frontoethmoidal, three ethmoidal, five maxillary and one frontal mucocele. Twenty-one patients underwent the modified Lothrop procedure for frontal mucoceles, and seven underwent simple drainage and marsupialization for frontoethmoidal, ethmoidal and maxillary mucoceles. At median follow-up of 16 months, all patients had a patent mucocele opening. Patients treated by drainage and marsupialization did not have any complications or mucocele recurrence. All patients treated by the modified endoscopic Lothrop procedure had improvement in symptoms and signs. Four patients had minor complications including epistaxis and adhesions and five required further surgery. The average hospital in-patient stay was 2 ± 1.4 days. Endoscopic techniques, including MELP are effective in the short term for the management of complex and simple paranasal sinus mucoceles. MELP has a useful place in the management of mucoceles with a significant bony partition from an adjacent sinus or nasal cavity. It is also indicated when the mucocele is associated with loss of lateral support in the sinus with risk of medial-wall collapse of the orbital contents obstructing drainage.Jwu Jin Khong, Raman Malhotra, Dinesh Selva and Peter John Wormal

Novel Genotypes of the Subtropical Grass \u3cem\u3eEragrostis Curvula\u3c/em\u3e for the Analysis of Apomixis (Diplospory)

Eragrostis curvula (Schrad.) Nees is a variable grass native to Southern Africa. Its several forms, known as lovegrasses, were introduced to Australia, USA and Argentina as forage perennial grasses. Apomixis is a common trait in the genus Eragrostis, with diplospory being the most frequent type. Sexual reproduction also occurs in Eragrostis, although not frequently. Since most tetraploid Eragrostis lines are apomictic, the generation of a sexual tetraploid strain is a requirement for linkage analysis of the gene(s) governing the apomictic character. Furthermore, isogenic lines of the same ploidy, reproducing alternatively by sexuality or apomixes, represent an ideal system for comparative transcriptome analysis. The aim of this work was the generation and characterization of two novel genotypes of E. curvula: a dihaploid strain obtained in vitro from an apomictic cultivar and a tetraploid plant derived from the dihaploid after chromosome duplication

Marcadores moleculares para el estudio de la variabilidad dentro del complejo Eragrostis curvula

211-220Weeping lovegrass is well adapted for forage production and useful for soil conservation in semiarid regions, constituting a morphologically diverse group. Diploid genotypes are unfrequent and reproduce sexually, whereas the tetraploids and plants of higher ploidy levels reproduce by apomixis. In the present work RAPD, AFLP and EST-SSR were used in order to assess the reproductive mode through progeny tests, to determine intracultivar homogeneity or seed purity, to establish genetic relationships among the cultivars within the complex and to characterize the new materials obtained by our group. Eight commercial cultivars and three new plant materials were analyzed. Uniform and variable patterns were observed in progenies of apomictic and sexual plants, respectively. Seed purity was evaluated in seed bulks, observing a certain degree of contamination with seeds from different sources. AFLP were the markers with the highest potential for cultivar identification. The clustering using SSR and AFLP was consistent with previous studies using isozymes and morphological traits. The new tetraploid materials developed by our own group should be included within the curvula type. We also proposed the creation of a new morphological type for the diploid, because it posses morphological characteristics of robusta and molecular profiles of the conferta type

Delocalizing effect of the Hubbard repulsion for electrons on a two-dimensional disordered lattice

We study numerically the ground-state properties of the repulsive Hubbard model for spin-1/2 electrons on two-dimensional lattices with disordered on-site energies. The projector quantum Monte Carlo method is used to obtain very accurate values of the ground-state charge density distributions with NpN_p and Np+1N_p+1 particles. The difference in these charge densities allows us to study the localization properties of an added particle. The results obtained at quarter-filling on finite clusters show that the Hubbard repulsion has a strong delocalizing effect on the electrons in disordered 2D lattices. However, numerical restrictions do not allow us to reach a definite conclusion about the existence of a metal-insulator transition in the thermodynamic limit in two-dimensions.Comment: revtex, 7 pages, 7 figure

The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical model for the combined effects of chemical reaction and heat generation/absorption on unsteady laminar free convective flow with heat and mass transfer over an incompressible viscous fluid past a vertical permeable cone with uniform wall temperature and concentration (UWT/UWC).The dimensionless governing boundary layer equations of the flow that are transient, coupled and non-linear partial differential equations are solved by an efficient, accurate and unconditionally stable finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicholson type. The velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles have been studied for various parameters viz., chemical reaction parameter , the heat generation and absorption parameter , Schmidt number Sc , Prandtl number Pr , buoyancy ratio parameter N . The local as well as average skin friction, Nusselt number, Sherwood number, are discussed and analyzed graphically. The present results are compared with available results in open literature and are found to be in excellent agreemen

Radioisotopic purity and imaging properties of cyclotron-produced 99mTc using direct 100Mo(p,2n) reaction

Evaluation of the radioisotopic purity of technetium-99m (99mTc) produced in GBq amounts by proton bombardment of enriched molibdenum-100 (100Mo) metallic targets at low proton energies (i.e. within 15\u201320 MeV) is conducted. This energy range was chosen since it is easily achievable by many conventional medical cyclotrons already available in the nuclear medicine departments of hospitals. The main motivation for such a study is in the framework of the research activities at the international level that have been conducted over the last few years to develop alternative production routes for the most widespread radioisotope used in medical imaging. The analysis of technetium isotopes and isomeric states (9xTc) present in the pertechnetate saline Na99mTcO4 solutions, obtained after the extraction/purification procedure, reveals radionuclidic purity levels basically in compliance with the limits recently issued by European Pharmacopoeia 9.3 (2018 Sodium pertechnetate (99mTc) injection 4801\u20133). Moreover, the impact of 9xTc contaminant nuclides on the final image quality is thoroughly evaluated, analyzing the emitted high-energy gamma rays and their influence on the image quality. The spatial resolution of images from cyclotron-produced 99mTc acquired with a mini-gamma camera was determined and compared with that obtained using technetium-99m solutions eluted from standard 99Mo/99mTc generators. The effect of the increased image background contribution due to Compton-scattered higher-energy gamma rays (E \u3b3 \u2009\u2009>\u2009\u2009200\u2009keV), which could cause image-contrast deterioration, was also studied. It is concluded that, due to the high radionuclidic purity of cyclotron-produced 99mTc using 100Mo(p,2n)99mTc reaction at a proton beam energy in the range 15.7\u201319.4 MeV, the resulting image properties are well comparable with those from the generator-eluted 99mTc
