    Framework for efficient transformation for complex medical data for improving analytical capability

    The adoption of various technological advancement has been already adopted in the area of healthcare sector. This adoption facilitates involuntary generation of medical data that can be autonomously programmed to be forwarded to a destined hub in the form of cloud storage units. However, owing to such technologies there is massive formation of complex medical data that significantly acts as an overhead towards performing analytical operation as well as unwanted storage utilization. Therefore, the proposed system implements a novel transformation technique that is capable of using a template based stucture over cloud for generating structured data from highly unstructured data in a non-conventional manner. The contribution of the propsoed methodology is that it offers faster processing and storage optimization. The study outcome also proves this fact to show propsoed scheme excels better in performance in contrast to existing data transformation scheme

    Heterotic expression in inbreds derived from four different base populations in maize (Zea mays L.).

    The concepts of combining ability and heterosis are the fundamental tools for enhancing productivity of different crops. The main objective is to study the usefulness of inbreds derived from four different base populations namely advanced generations of single cross hybrids, three way cross hybrids, hybrid mixtures and composites by analyzing the combining ability of inbreds and crosses derived and the heterosis obtained for important characters. One hundred and forty four maize inbreds derived from four different base populations namely advanced generations of single cross hybrids, three way cross hybrids, hybrid mixtures and composites were studied for their heterotic expression. The results indicated that composite and hybrid mixture base populations shall be of great use in deriving genetically divergent inbreds and single cross hybrids with significant standard heterosis suitable for commercial exploitation

    Prospective study of the functional outcome of uncemented bipolar hemiarhroplasty in displaced fracture neck of femur in elderly

    Background: Hip fractures in older patients are associated with impaired mobility, excess morbidity, mortality and loss of independence. To avoid the drawbacks of internal fixation and for early mobilization, hemiarthroplasty is performed in elderly. The bipolar prosthesis was developed to overcome the shortcomings of the unipolar fixed-head prosthesis. An additional site of motion would be expected to decrease the amount of loosening, dislocation, and head migration. The aim of the study is to assess the functional outcome of the patients with fracture neck of femur treated with bipolar hemiarthroplasty.Methods: In this study, 20 patients above the age of 60 years with acute displaced fracture neck of femur underwent hemireplacement arthroplasty with bipolar prosthesis in Department of Orthopaedics, KIMS, Bangalore. The patients were followed up on 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th week post operatively. Functional outcome was assessed with Harris hip score.Results: In our study, mean average age was 72.3 years with predominantly female patients with 75% of the patients with left sided fracture. 95% of the patients had slight or no pain, 85% of patients had slight or no limp. 50% of the patients could walk without support, 65% of the patients could walk a distance of 6 blocks or more. Average Harris hip score was 82%.Conclusions: These results suggest functional outcome following bipolar hemiarthroplasty is good. Early mobilisation, pain free hip and with good level of activity is obtained following bipolar hemiarthroplasty

    The short-run performance of equity issues in South Africa: Bad timing or a last resort?

    Understanding the stock market’s reaction to secondary equity offerings (SEOs) is vital for managers who are commonly tasked with deciding on how to finance their firm’s operations. This study investigated the short-run performance of firms conducting equity issuance on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) over the period 1998–2015 by exploring both rational and behavioural models in predicting SEO behaviour. Event-study analysis reveals that the market generally reacts negatively to the announcement of SEOs with a statistically significant average two-day cumulative abnormal return of -2.6%. We also found that the probability of a firm conducting a SEO is significantly negatively related to the number of years listed and the future share return. Although it would make sense that more corporate activity takes place during periods of high investor sentiment, there is no significant evidence that firms conducting SEOs are attempting to time the market

    Evaluating tropical single cross maize hybrids for adaptability and commercial value

    Stability analysis was carried out to study stability in performance and genotype x environment interactions for sixty single cross hybrids along with three checks viz., 900M Gold, CP 818 and NK 6240 in three research farms of Foliage Crop Solutions Private Limited viz., Attur (Tamilnadu), Hosur (Tamilnadu), and Renebennur (Karnataka) un- der irrigated conditions during 2011-13. Data were recorded on different morphological and yield parameters viz., days to 50% silking, days to maturity, plant height, number of leaves, ear length, number of kernels row-1, number of kernels ear-1, hundred seed weight, and grain yield and the mean was used for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance carried out for all the characters revealed that the variance due to genotypes was highly significant for all the characters studied in all the three environments. Pooled analysis of variance for stability done using Eber- hart and Russel model of stability revealed that the variance due to genotypes, environments and environment components were highly significant for all the characters studied. However, it was found that the variance due to genotype x environment (linear) component was non-significant only for ear length and number of kernel rows and significant for the remaining characters

    Authorship Trends in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

    Publications are an important tool to measure one's success and achievement in academia. They can help propel a career forward and move one into a position of leadership. The overall purpose of this study was to investigate changes in bibliometric variables, authorship, and collaboration trends in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research (JOR®), since its inception in 1983. A bibliometric analysis was completed for all manuscripts meeting the inclusion criteria (638), which were published throughout the inaugural year plus one representative year of each decade. Several parameters were investigated including numbers of manuscripts, authors, collaborating institutions/countries, references, pages, and citations; region of origin and gender of authors over time and by region were main focuses. Significant increases over time were observed in all bibliometric variables analyzed except in the number of pages and citations. There was an approximate 27 percentage point increase for both female first and corresponding authors from 1983 to 2015. While this is most likely due to the increase in the number of women that have entered the field over time, similar increases in the percentage of women holding positions on the JOR editorial board or in leadership positions within in the field may have also contributed to improvements in gender parity. Understanding changes in publishing characteristics over time, by region, and by gender are critical, especially with the rising demands of publishing in academia. JOR has seen increase in most variables analyzed, including improvements in authorship by women in the field of orthopaedic research

    Force and pressure tests of the GA(W)-1 airfoil with a 20% aileron and pressure tests with a 30% Fowler flap

    Wind tunnel force and pressure tests were conducted for the GA(W)-1 airfoil equipped with a 20% aileron, and pressure tests were conducted with a 30% Fowler flap. All tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 2.2 and a Mach number of 0.13. The aileron provides control effectiveness similar to ailerons applied to more conventional airfoils. Effects of aileron gaps from 0% to 2% chord were evaluated, as well as hinge moment characteristics. The aft camber of the GA(W)-1 section results in a substantial up-aileron moment, but the hinge moments associated with aileron deflection are similar to other configurations. Fowler flap pressure distributions indicate that unseparated flow is achieved for flap settings up to 40 deg., over a limited angle of attack range. Theoretical pressure distributions compare favorably with experiments for low flap deflections, but show substantial errors at large deflections

    Serotonin regulates mitochondrial biogenesis and function in rodent cortical neurons via the 5-HT2A receptor and SIRT1–PGC-1α axis

    Mitochondria in neurons, in addition to their primary role in bioenergetics, also contribute to specialized functions, including regulation of synaptic transmission, Ca2+ homeostasis, neuronal excitability, and stress adaptation. However, the factors that influence mitochondrial biogenesis and function in neurons remain poorly elucidated. Here, we identify an important role for serotonin (5-HT) as a regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis and function in rodent cortical neurons, via a 5-HT2A receptor-mediated recruitment of the SIRT1–PGC-1α axis, which is relevant to the neuroprotective action of 5-HT. We found that 5-HT increased mitochondrial biogenesis, reflected through enhanced mtDNA levels, mitotracker staining, and expression of mitochondrial components. This resulted in higher mitochondrial respiratory capacity, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) efficiency, and a consequential increase in cellular ATP levels. Mechanistically, the effects of 5-HT were mediated via the 5-HT2A receptor and master modulators of mitochondrial biogenesis, SIRT1 and PGC-1α. SIRT1 was required to mediate the effects of 5-HT on mitochondrial biogenesis and function in cortical neurons. In vivo studies revealed that 5-HT2A receptor stimulation increased cortical mtDNA and ATP levels in a SIRT1-dependent manner. Direct infusion of 5-HT into the neocortex and chemogenetic activation of 5-HT neurons also resulted in enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis and function in vivo. In cortical neurons, 5-HT enhanced expression of antioxidant enzymes, decreased cellular reactive oxygen species, and exhibited neuroprotection against excitotoxic and oxidative stress, an effect that required SIRT1. These findings identify 5-HT as an upstream regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis and function in cortical neurons and implicate the mitochondrial effects of 5-HT in its neuroprotective action.Fil: Fanibunda, S.
