Social Capital and Subjective Well-Being in Malaysia

The objective of this paper is to examine the relationship between different forms of social capital and subjective well-being in Malaysia. Subjective well-being is observed based on two aspects: happiness and life satisfaction. The analysis using data from the World Value Survey with 1300 respondents. Based on the ordered probit regression analysis, it is found that bonding and linking social capital contribute to happiness. Happiness also increases for those who are more active in associations. However, bridging social capital based on trust of people from other religion and ethnic group as well as people whom an individual does not know have adverse contribution to happiness. Only linking social capital has a positive relationship with life satisfaction. In terms of religiosity, importance of God seems to have positive relationship with both happiness and life satisfaction. Other factors such as health status, income, marital status and education also have the influence on Malaysians’ happiness and life satisfaction levels

AbstractThe objective of this study was to examine factors that influence Malaysian young consumers’ online purchase intention through social media. The technology acceptance model and the theory of reasoned action were employed to develop the conceptual framework. Three factors, namely perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and subjective norm were tested. Data were gathered from 297 undergraduate students using the stratified sampling method and multiple regression analysis were conducted to analyse the data. The results revealed that perceived usefulness was the most dominant factors that influence young consumers’ online purchase intention through social media, followed by perceived ease of use and subjective norm. The practical implications of this study were discussed

Effectiveness Of Interaction Analysis Feedback On The Verbal Behaviour Of Primary School Mathematics Teachers

    Get PDF
This study attempted to investigate the relative effectiveness of interaction analysis feedback on the verbal behaviour of teachers teaching mathematics in Primary 5 classes of four randomly selected primary schools in Brunei-Muara district. It also attempted to investigate the effects of the feedback system on pupils' attitude towards mathematics and their academic achievement in mathematics. The sample used for the study consisted of eight primary school teachers teaching mathematics subject. These eight teachers were preselected and were divided into feedback (experimental) and nonfeedback (control) groups. One teacher from each of the four schools was selected as the experimental group and the other teacher from the same school was picked as the control group. One hundred and fifty two pupils of average ability from four urban schools were involved. To examine the extent to which the feedback system was effective, a modified Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS) was used to record classroom communications and the results provided as a feedback to the experimental group. Results showed that the feedback groups accepted students feelings more, praised students more, used students' ideas and initiated more student talk in the classroom. Effects of the feedback were encouraging with higher student academic achievement and more favourable attitudes after teachers were given feedback

A survey on community pharmacists’ interest in providing online pharmacy services

    Get PDF
There is scarce information on the adoption of e-commerce among retail pharmacists in developing countries. E-pharmacy is defined as community pharmacies provide either singular or a combination of online pharmacy services e.g., virtual dispensing of controlled medicines, online medicinal product consultation, medication-health related online services, health supplements and beauty product online consultation and product delivery services. This study aimed to explore the interest among licensed retail pharmacists to adopt e-commerce as part of their business provisions and to determine key determinants of their interest in providing e-pharmacy services. A self-administered online survey was distributed to 3858 licensed community pharmacists using an email list which was provided by the Pharmacy Enforcement Division, Ministry of Health. The response rate was 9.15% (N=353). Findings showed that 78.2% of the respondents were interested in providing e-pharmacy services. The key determinants of their interest were influenced by community pharmacists’ perceptions towards consumer norms in subscribing to online services, socio-technology trends, pressure from competition and readiness to comply with e-pharmacy regulatory requirements. This study urges the pharmacy authority to formulate business-friendly requirements in empowering community pharmacists to adopt e-pharmacy services and establish a conducive environment for community pharmacists to innovate pharmacy practices. E-pharmacy will benefit the public by providing access to quality medicinal products at competitive prices

Quantitative Measure to Differentiate Wicket Spike from Interictal Epileptiform Discharges

    Get PDF
A number of benign EEG patterns are often misinterpreted as interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) because of their epileptiform appearances, one of them is wicket spike. Differentiating wicket spike from IEDs may help in preventing epilepsy misdiagnosis. The temporal location of IEDs and wicket spike were chosen from 143 EEG recordings. Amplitude, duration and angles were measured from the wave triangles and were used as the variables. In this study, linear discriminant analysis is used to create the formula to differentiate wicket spike from IEDs consisting spike and sharp waves. We obtained a formula with excellent accuracy. This study emphasizes the need for objective criteria to distinguish wicket spike from IEDs to avoid misreading of the EEG and misdiagnosis of epilepsy

Cryopreservation of Neurospheres Derived from Human Glioblastoma Multiforme

Cancer stem cells have been shown to initiate and sustain tumor growth. In many instances, clinical material is limited, compounded by a lack of methods to preserve such cells at convenient time points. Although brain tumor-initiating cells grown in a spheroid manner have been shown to maintain their integrity through serial transplantation in immune-compromised animals, practically, it is not always possible to have access to animals of suitable ages to continuously maintain these cells. We therefore explored vitrification as a cryopreservation technique for brain tumor-initiating cells. Tumor neurospheres were derived from five patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Cryopreservation in 90% serum and 10% dimethyl sulfoxide yielded greatest viability and could be explored in future studies. Vitrification yielded cells that maintained self-renewal and multipotentiality properties. Karyotypic analyses confirmed the presence of GBM hallmarks. Upon implantation into NOD/SCID mice, our vitrified cells reformed glioma masses that could be serially transplanted. Transcriptome analysis showed that the vitrified and nonvitrified samples in either the stem-like or differentiated states clustered together, providing evidence that vitrification does not change the genotype of frozen cells. Upon induction of differentiation, the transcriptomes of vitrified cells associated with the original primary tumors, indicating that tumor stem-like cells are a genetically distinct population from the differentiated mass, underscoring the importance of working with the relevant tumor-initiating population. Our results demonstrate that vitrification of brain tumor-initiating cells preserves the biological phenotype and genetic profiles of the cells. This should facilitate the establishment of a repository of tumor-initiating cells for subsequent experimental designs
