    Hierarchical Matrices in the See-Saw Mechanism, large Neutrino Mixing and Leptogenesis

    We consider the see-saw mechanism for hierarchical Dirac and Majorana neutrino mass matrices m_D and M_R, including the CP violating phases. Simple arguments about the structure of the neutrino mass matrix and the requirement of successful leptogenesis lead to the situation that one of the right-handed Majorana neutrinos is much heavier than the other two, which in turn display a rather mild hierarchy. It is investigated how for the neutrino mixing one small and two large angles are generated. The mixing matrix element |U_{e3}|^2 is larger than 10^{-3} and a characteristic ratio between the branching ratios of lepton flavor violating charged lepton decays \ell_j -> \ell_i \gamma is found. Successful leptogenesis implies sizable CP violation in oscillation experiments. As in the original minimal see-saw model, the signs of the baryon asymmetry of the universe and of the CP asymmetry in neutrino oscillations are equal and there is no connection between the leptogenesis phase and the effective mass as measurable in neutrinoless double beta decay.Comment: 16 + 3 pages, 2 figures.     Flow and Heat Transfer in 180-Degree Turn Square Ducts: Effects of Turning Configuration and System Rotation

    Forced flow through channels connected by sharp bends is frequently encountered in various rocket and gas turbine engines. For example, the transfer ducts, the coolant channels surround the combustion chamber, the internal cooling passage in a blade or vane, the flow path in the fuel element of a nuclear rocket engine, the flow around a pressure relieve valve piston, and the recirculated base flow of multiple engine clustered nozzles. Transport phenomena involved in such a flow passage are complex and considered to be very different from those of conventional turning flow with relatively mild radii of curvature. While previous research pertaining to this subject has been focused primarily on the experimental heat transfer, very little analytical work is directed to understanding the flowfield and energy transport in the passage. Therefore, the primary goal of this paper is to benchmark the predicted wall heat fluxes using a state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) formulation against those of measurement for a rectangular turn duct. Other secondary goals include studying the effects of turning configurations, e.g., the semi-circular turn, and the rounded-corner turn, and the effect of system rotation. The computed heat fluxes for the rectangular turn duct compared favorably with those of the experimental data. The results show that the flow pattern, pressure drop, and heat transfer characteristics are different among the three turning configurations, and are substantially different with system rotation. Also demonstrated in this work is that the present computational approach is quite effective and efficient and will be suitable for flow and thermal modeling in rocket and turbine engine applications

    The Family of MapReduce and Large Scale Data Processing Systems

    In the last two decades, the continuous increase of computational power has produced an overwhelming flow of data which has called for a paradigm shift in the computing architecture and large scale data processing mechanisms. MapReduce is a simple and powerful programming model that enables easy development of scalable parallel applications to process vast amounts of data on large clusters of commodity machines. It isolates the application from the details of running a distributed program such as issues on data distribution, scheduling and fault tolerance. However, the original implementation of the MapReduce framework had some limitations that have been tackled by many research efforts in several followup works after its introduction. This article provides a comprehensive survey for a family of approaches and mechanisms of large scale data processing mechanisms that have been implemented based on the original idea of the MapReduce framework and are currently gaining a lot of momentum in both research and industrial communities. We also cover a set of introduced systems that have been implemented to provide declarative programming interfaces on top of the MapReduce framework. In addition, we review several large scale data processing systems that resemble some of the ideas of the MapReduce framework for different purposes and application scenarios.     Expression profiling of genes involved in the development and function of skeletal muscles in Ts1Cje mouse model of down syndrome

    Introduction: Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy of human chromosome 21 (HSA21). Motor dysfunction due to hypotonia has limited labour productivity and have significant effects on socio-economic status in DS individuals. Ts1Cje, a mouse model of DS that exhibits muscle weakness was employed, to investigate the expression profile of selected trisomic and disomic genes involved in skeletal muscle structure and function. Methods: Quadriceps and triceps were harvested from the Ts1Cje (C57BL/6) postnatal day 60-70 mice and corresponding wild-type littermates. Total RNA extracted from these tissues was subjected for quantitative expression profiling of three trisomic genes (Itsn1, Synj1 and Rcan1) involved in neurotransmission and six disomic genes (Lamc1, Leprel1, Myl6b, Msn, Pgm5 and Tmod1) essential for maintenance of muscle structure and function. Real-time quantitative PCR method was used for the profiling. Results: Differential gene expression in DS is reflected by 1.5-fold or more increase in the level of expression as predicted by the gene dosage imbalance hypothesis. The analysis showed no significant changes in the expression level of trisomic genes (Itsn1, Synj1 and Rcan1). On contrary, disomic genes, Leprel1 and Pgm5, were upregulated for more than 1.5-fold in DS quadriceps whereas Lamc1, Myl6b and Pgm5 were upregulated for more than 1.5 fold in DS triceps as compared to the wild-type group. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the dysregulation of Lamc1, Leprel1, Myl6b and Pgm5 genes is associated to muscle weakness seen in Ts1Cje and may play a role in molecular pathogenesis of muscle weakness in DS

    Improving Surgical Outcome Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging Techniques in Deep Brain Stimulation

    IntroductionRecent advances in surgical imaging include the use of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in deep brain stimulation (DBS) and provide a detailed view of the white matter tracts and their connections which are not seen with conventional magnetic resonance imaging. Given that the efficacy of DBS depends on the precise and accurate targeting of these circuits, better surgical planning using information obtained from DTI may lead to improved surgical outcome. We aim to review the available literature to evaluate the efficacy of such a strategy.MethodsA search of PubMed was performed to identify all articles using the search terms “(diffusion tractography OR diffusion tensor imaging OR DTI) AND (deep brain stimulation OR DBS).” Studies were included if DTI was used and clinical outcomes were reported.ResultsWe identified 35 studies where the use of DTI in DBS was evaluated. The most studied pathology was movement disorders (17 studies), psychiatric disorders (11 studies), and pain (7 studies). The overall responder rates for tremor reduction was 70.0% (SD = 26.1%) in 69 patients, 36.5% (SD = 19.1%) for obsessive–compulsive disorder in 9 patients, 48.3% (SD = 40.0%) for depression in 40 patients, and 49.7% (SD = 35.1%) for chronic pain in 23 patients.DiscussionThe studies reviewed show that the use of DTI for surgical planning is feasible, provide additional information over conventional targeting methods, and can improve surgical outcome. Patients in whom the DBS electrodes were within the DTI targets experienced better outcomes than those in whom the electrodes were not. Many current studies are limited by their small sample size or retrospective nature. The use of DTI in DBS planning appears underutilized and further studies are warranted given that surgical outcome can be optimized using this non-invasive technique

    Understanding suicide attempts among gay men from their self-perceived causes

    Gay men are at higher risk of suicidality. This paper describes the causes of suicide attempts as perceived by the men themselves and analyzes their impact on severity and recidivism. Mental health surveys conducted among gay men in Geneva, Switzerland, from two probability-based time-space samples in 2007 and 2011, were merged to yield a combined sample N = 762. Suicide ideation, plans, and attempts were assessed, and respondents who had ever attempted suicide answered open questions about perceived causes which were coded and categorized for analysis within the framework of cultural epidemiology. In all, 16.7% of the respondents reported a suicide attempt in their lifetime (59.5% of them with multiple attempts). At their latest attempt, over two thirds asserted intent to die, and half required medical assistance. There was a wide variety of perceived causes, with most individuals reporting multiple causes and many of the most common causes cited at both the first and most recent subsequent attempts. Social/inter-personal problems constitute the most prominent category. Problems with love/relationship and accepting one's homosexuality figure consistently among the top three causes. Whereas the former tend to be associated with weaker intent to die, the latter are associated with the strongest intent to die and reported at multiple attempts. Problems with family are among the most common perceived causes at first attempt but not at the most recent subsequent attempt. Nevertheless, they tend to be related to the strongest intent to die and the greatest medical severity of all the perceived causes. Ten percent of men attempting suicide cited depression as a cause. Although it tended to be associated with weaker intent to die, depression was most likely to be reported at multiple attempts. Respondent-driven assessment yielded both common and idiosyncratic causes of suicide and their distinct effects. Some of these perceived causes are not prominent in the curren literature, yet they have important implications for understanding risk and preventing suicide among gay men
