INTEGRATING EXPERIENCE: SUPPORTING TEACHERS AS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CO-FACILITATORS IN THEIR COLLABORATIVE WORK TO DESIGN, ENACT, AND INTEGRATE THE LESSONS OF EXPERIENCE WITHIN CLASSROOM CURRICULA
Teachers at an independent, sectarian school had growing concerns and needs related to the design, enactment, and curricular integration of an extensive 6-12 experiential learning (EL) program. In their roles as EL co-facilitators and leaders, these teachers recognized that EL programing (i.e., field trips, outdoor adventure education, service learning, etc.) should represent meaningful, student-centered learning, but they were worried that there was a disconnect between the themes and goals of the EL program and the actual integration of those themes and goals within classroom curricula. The author's review of the literature highlighted the defining features of meaningful EL, and a needs assessment study underscored the contextual issues and opportunities for improvement. These findings led the author to explore literature related to effective professional development in order to conduct a collaborative program evaluation over eight months that studied ongoing efforts to improve the school’s EL program writ large. The findings of this study informed principles related this ongoing integrative work, including the importance of visionary leadership, continued training for chaperones as EL co-facilitators, and a focus on purposeful planning in collaboration

The effect of refugee resettlement on physical educators’ behaviors and teaching practice
Refugee resettlement is the direct result of persecution brought on by politics, war, ethnic violence, or religious persecution. The United States has traditionally been the place where many refugees settle. Refugee families find their way to cities all across America with hope for a better life, employment and quality education for their children. The physical education (PE) teacher typically has interaction with every student in the school, and is likely to affect, and be affected by, a refugee students’ school experience. Currently, there is little to no research concerning the beliefs and subsequent behaviors and teaching practices of PE teachers interacting with refugees. The purpose of this phenomenological multiple case study is to examine the personal, cultural, and professional experiences of physical educators in schools where there is a substantial refugee student population. James Banks’ conceptual framework of multicultural education was used to help discover how PE teachers create PE learning environments that are relevant and beneficial to refugee students. Research questions sought to understand how refugees affect the PE teacher’s beliefs, behavior, cultural sensitivity and pedagogical practices. This study was conducted over a two-year period and qualitative data was collected from seventeen PE teachers. A snowball sampling method allowed for more teachers to participate therefore allowing the potential for further enrichment of the study. While completing the literature review, a pilot study was conducted, interviewing and observing five teachers. Overall, seventeen participants were interviewed, and twenty-one observations of PE classes were made. Relevant artifacts were collected along with the researcher’s field and observation notes. Upon completion of all interviews and observations a thorough analysis was completed and brought to a conclusion for submission in this dissertation. Findings indicated seven primary themes: the presence of refugee students will shape teaching practices; language and culture influence relationships and teaching; professional development is deficient; a student’s culture may enlighten one’s worldview; diversity in the classroom may reduce prejudice; the PE teacher becomes aware of adverse childhood experiences; and cultural competency matters. Findings indicated that the behaviors and practices of PE teachers are affected by the presence of refugee students. PE teachers recognize that this phenomenon of diverse student populations in the classroom makes the learning and teaching experience challenging and influential.Curriculum and Instructio
The recoverability of fingerprints on paper exposed to elevated temperatures - Part 2: natural fluorescence
Previous work by the authors [1] investigated the recoverability of fingerprints on paper which had been exposed to elevated temperatures by comparing various chemical enhancement techniques (ninhydrin, 1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO), and physical developer (PD)). During that study, it became apparent, as a consequence of observations made in operational work [2], that fingerprints on paper subjected to 150ËšC fluoresced under examination with green light of waveband 473-548nm with a 549nm viewing filter. This work examined the three types of prints (eccrine, sebaceous, and ungroomed) after 20 min exposure to the temperature range 110ËšC to 190ËšC (in 10ËšC increments) and found that the eccrine fingerprints fluoresced more brightly. This indicated that it was a component of the eccrine deposit which was causing the fluorescence. Luminance measurements found that the maximum fluorescence was experienced at 170ËšC on both types of paper. As a consequence, eccrine heat-treated fingerprints were viewed under violet-blue (350-469nm), blue (352-509nm), and green light (473-548nm) which indicated that the greatest luminance intensities were obtained under blue light and the smallest under green light. In order to determine what component of the eccrine fingerprint was causing this fluorescence, five of the most prevalent amino acids (alanine, aspartic acid, glycine, lysine, and serine) [3-4] were exposed to this temperature range. The luminance measurements were taken under exposure to the green light in order for the minimum fluorescence to be observed, with an assumption that blue-violet or blue illumination will provide brighter fluorescence in practice. The results indicated that four of the amino acids are behaving similarly across the temperature range, but with slightly different luminance measurements, but all are exhibiting some level of fluorescence. Thermal degradation products of alanine and aspartic acid have been suggested by Richmond-Aylor et al. [5]. The structure of these thermal degradation products is cyclic in nature, and as such, there is a possibility that two of these products would fluorescence. Sodium chloride and urea were also exposed to the temperature range and they also fluoresced to some extent. This work shows that eccrine fingerprints that have been exposed to temperatures of between 130ËšC to 180ËšC will fluoresce under violet-blue, blue, and green light. This level of fluorescence for ungroomed fingerprints is much less but this will be dependent on the individual, the more eccrine the deposit, the stronger the fluorescence. This work shows that the amino acids, sodium chloride, and urea present in fingerprint deposits are all contributing to the fluorescence of the print, but may not be the sole contributor as other eccrine components have not yet been tested
Fingermark visualisation with iron oxide powder suspension:the variable effectiveness of iron (II/III) oxide powders, and Tween® 20 as an alternative to TritonTM X-100
The effectiveness of the current UK iron oxide powder suspension formulation, ‘C-IOPS-09’ (Triton X-100 based), for fingermark or latent fingerprint visualization is shown to be affected by variations between batches of the recommended iron oxide powder from Fisher Scientific (I/1100/53). When incorporated into the C-IOPS-09 formulation, a 2015 powder batch resulted in the detection of ∼19% fewer fingermarks, of broadly reduced contrast, when compared to powder suspension prepared with a 2008 batch of the same product. Furthermore, the 2015 powder batch was found to be unsuitable in experimental reduced-surfactant concentration powder suspension, because it caused surface-wide or background staining. The studies in this paper also investigated the use of Tween 20 surfactant as an alternative to the currently utilised Triton X-100, in preparation for the potential unavailability of Triton X-100 in the future. Powder suspensions prepared with Tween 20 surfactant solutions of 4% and 40% were shown to offer similar effectiveness to the currently recommended C-IOPS-09 formulation, when compared using the same batch of Fisher Scientific iron oxide powder (2008 or 2015). The difference between the 2008 and 2015 iron oxide batches was hence also evident with these alternative surfactant solutions. Particle size distribution analysis of the iron oxide powders in Tween 20 and Triton X-100 based surfactant solutions show that the more effective powder exhibits a higher sub-micrometre particle population than the less effective powder. This work leads to an improved specification for powder suspension formulations. This is demonstrated with an example powder suspension formulation which uses a 10% Tween 20 surfactant solution and iron oxide nanopowder (50–100 nm) from Sigma Aldrich, which was shown to visualise 27% more fingermarks than the C-IOPS-09 formulation prepared with the 2015 Fisher Scientific powder batch, in a comparative study
Pre-validation of a MALDI MS proteomics-based method for the reliable detection of blood and blood provenance
Abstract: The reliable identification of blood, as well as the determination of its origin (human or animal) is of great importance in a forensic investigation. Whilst presumptive tests are rapid and deployed in situ, their very nature requires confirmatory tests to be performed remotely. However, only serological tests can determine blood provenance. The present study improves on a previously devised Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (MALDI MS)—proteomics based method for the reliable detection of blood by enabling the determination of blood provenance. The overall protocol was developed to be more specific than presumptive tests and faster/easier than the gold standard liquid chromatography (LC) MS/MS analysis. This is considered a pre-validation study that has investigated stains and fingermarks made in blood, other biofluids and substances that can elicit a false-positive response to colorimetric or presumptive tests, in a blind fashion. Stains and marks were either untreated or enhanced with a range of presumptive tests. Human and animal blood were correctly discriminated from other biofluids and non-biofluid related matrices; animal species determination was also possible within the system investigated. The procedure is compatible with the prior application of presumptive tests. The refined strategy resulting from iterative improvements through a trial and error study of 56 samples was applied to a final set of 13 blind samples. This final study yielded 12/13 correct identifications with the 13th sample being correctly identified as animal blood but with no species attribution. This body of work will contribute towards the validation of MALDI MS based methods and deployment in violent crimes involving bloodshed
Variation in amino acid and lipid composition of latent fingerprints
The enhancement of latent fingerprints, both at the crime scene and in the laboratory using an array of chemical, physical and optical techniques, permits their use for identification. Despite the plethora of techniques available, there are occasions when latent fingerprints are not successfully enhanced. An understanding of latent fingerprint chemistry and behaviour will aid the improvement of current techniques and the development of novel ones. In this study the amino acid and fatty acid content of ‘real’ latent fingerprints collected on a non-porous surface was analysed by gas chromatography–mass
spectrometry. Squalene was also quantified in addition. Hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and cis-9-
octadecenoic acid were the most abundant fatty acids in all samples. There was, however, wide variation in the relative amounts of each fatty acid in each sample. It was clearly demonstrated that touching sebum-rich areas of the face immediately prior to fingerprint deposition resulted in a significant increase in the amount of fatty acids and squalene deposited in the resulting ‘groomed’ fingerprints. Serine was the most abundant amino acid identified followed by glycine, alanine and aspartic acid. The significant
quantitative differences between the ‘natural’ and ‘groomed’ fingerprint samples seen for fatty acids
were not observed in the case of the amino acids. This study demonstrates the variation in latent fingerprint composition between individuals and the impact of the sampling protocol on the quantitative analysis of fingerprints
Consumption of Bt Maize Pollen Expressing Cry1Ab or Cry3Bb1 Does Not Harm Adult Green Lacewings, Chrysoperla carnea (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae)
Adults of the common green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), are prevalent pollen-consumers in maize fields. They are therefore exposed to insecticidal proteins expressed in the pollen of insect-resistant, genetically engineered maize varieties expressing Cry proteins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the impact of Cry3Bb1 or Cry1Ab-expressing transgenic maize (MON 88017, Event Bt176) pollen on fitness parameters of adult C. carnea. Adults were fed pollen from Bt maize varieties or their corresponding near isolines together with sucrose solution for 28 days. Survival, pre-oviposition period, fecundity, fertility and dry weight were not different between Bt or non-Bt maize pollen treatments. In order to ensure that adults of C. carnea are not sensitive to the tested toxins independent from the plant background and to add certainty to the hazard assessment, adult C. carnea were fed with artificial diet containing purified Cry3Bb1 or Cry1Ab at about a 10 times higher concentration than in maize pollen. Artificial diet containing Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) was included as a positive control. No differences were found in any life-table parameter between Cry protein containing diet treatments and control diet. However, the pre-oviposition period, daily and total fecundity and dry weight of C. carnea were significantly negatively affected by GNA-feeding. In both feeding assays, the stability and bioactivity of Cry proteins in the food sources as well as the uptake by C. carnea was confirmed. These results show that adults of C. carnea are not affected by Bt maize pollen and are not sensitive to Cry1Ab and Cry3Bb1 at concentrations exceeding the levels in pollen. Consequently, Bt maize pollen consumption will pose a negligible risk to adult C. carnea
Individual differences in reproductive strategy are related to views about recreational drug use in Belgium, the Netherlands and Japan
Individual differences in moral views are often explained as the downstream effect of ideological commitments, such as political orientation and religiosity. Recent studies in the U.S. suggest that moral views about recreational drug use are also influenced by attitudes towards sex and that this relationship cannot be explained by ideological commitments. In this study, we investigate student samples from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Japan. We find that, in all samples, sexual attitudes are strongly related to views about recreational drug use, even after controlling for various ideological variables. We discuss our results in the light of reproductive strategies as determinants of moral views
How do parents manage irritability, challenging behavior, non-compliance and anxiety in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders? A meta-synthesis
Although there is increasing research interest in the parenting of children with ASD, at present, little is known about everyday strategies used to manage problem behaviour. We conducted a meta-synthesis to explore what strategies parents use to manage irritability, non-compliance, challenging behaviour and anxiety in their children with ASD. Approaches included: (1) accommodating the child; (2) modifying the environment; (3) providing structure, routine and occupation; (4) supervision and monitoring; (5) managing non-compliance with everyday tasks; (6) responding to problem behaviour; (7) managing distress; (8) maintaining safety and (9) analysing and planning. Results suggest complex parenting demands in children with ASD and problem behaviour. Findings will inform the development of a new measure to quantify parenting strategies relevant to ASD
