    A high-power and fast charging Li-ion battery with outstanding cycle-life

    Electrochemical energy storage devices based on Li-ion cells currently power almost all electronic devices and power tools. The development of new Li-ion cell configurations by incorporating innovative functional components (electrode materials and electrolyte formulations) will allow to bring this technology beyond mobile electronics and to boost performance largely beyond the state-of-the-art. Here we demonstrate a new full Li-ion cell constituted by a high-potential cathode material, i.e. LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, a safe nanostructured anode material, i.e. TiO2, and a composite electrolyte made by a mixture of an ionic liquid suitable for high potential applications, i.e. Pyr1,4PF6, a lithium salt, i.e. LiPF6, and standard organic carbonates. The final cell configuration is able to reversibly cycle lithium for thousands of cycles at 1000 mAg-1 and a capacity retention of 65% at cycle 2000. © 2017 The Author(s)

    Reproductive Phenology of Pterocladiella capillacea (Rhodophyta: Gelidiales) from Southern Baja California, Mexico

    The abundance of vegetative and reproductive fronds of Pterocladiella capillacea (Gelidiaceae) from an intertidal population at Lobos Point, on the Pacific coast of southern Baja California, Mexico, was measured bimonthly between March 1998 and January 1999. Fronds with tetrasporic sori occurred throughout the year, although in low percentages with respect to the total amount of fronds: monthly means ranged between 0.5% (May) and 6.0% (July). Fronds with cystocarps and fronds with spermatangia were found only in January, with even lower percentages: 0.15% and 0.10%, respectively. The overall predominance of reproductive tetrasporophytic fronds over reproductive gametophytic fronds is common in natural populations of the Gelidiaceae. Reproductive phenology, however, varies widely within this family, even within the same species, as is the case for P. capillacea. Little is known about factors affecting the reproductive phenology of this cosmopolitan alga; field and laboratory studies are needed to provide a reliable predictive framework

    The scientific community is continuously committed to the search for new high energy electrochemical storage devices. In this regard, lithium metal batteries, due to their very high electrochemical energy storage capacity, appear to be a highly appealing choice. Unfortunately, the use of lithium metal as the anode may lead to some safety hazards due to its uneven deposition upon charging, resulting in dendrite growth and eventual shorting of the battery. This issue may be successfully addressed by using intrinsically safer electrolytes capable of establishing a physical barrier at the electrode interface. The most promising candidates are solid electrolytes, either polymeric or inorganic. The main purpose of this review is to describe the present status of worldwide research on these electrolyte materials together with a critical discussion of their transport properties and compatibility with metallic lithium, hoping to provide some general guidelines for the development of innovative and safe lithium metal batterie

    Impedance tube measurements on the denorms round robin test material samples

    The DENORMS Round Robin Test aims to study and improve the techniques used to determine the sound absorption coefficient of materials. Within this framework, samples taken from the same batch have been tested in both reverberation room and impedance tube. The latter technique presents some challenges in that the results may strongly depend on the specimen preparation and set-up. The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained in custom-made impedance tube for the RRT set of materials. The tests have been carried out using a four-microphone impedance tube, according to the method outlined in the ASTM E2611-09 standard. The results obtained for the different parameters provided by the test, in particular the sound absorption coefficient and the sound transmission loss, are taken into account and discussed

    Abundance data for invertebrate assemblages from intertidal mussel beds along the Atlantic Canadian coast

    This data set describes the abundance of 50 invertebrate taxa found in intertidal mussel beds along the Atlantic Canadian coast. This information resulted from a regionalscale study that investigated the effects of wave exposure on the richness and composition of invertebrate assemblages from intertidal mussel beds. Abundance data are provided for taxa representing the Annelida, Arthropoda, Bryozoa, Chordata, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Nematoda, Nemertea, and Platyhelminthes. The data characterize mussel beds from wave-sheltered and wave-exposed locations spanning 315 km of the coast of Nova Scotia. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that the compositional structure of these invertebrate assemblages differed markedly depending on wave exposure. Overall, because of its taxonomic diversity, the inclusion of data for basal, intermediate, and top trophic levels, and the coverage of two extremes of environmental stress, this data set could be useful to test broader aspects of ecological theory. Areas of ecology that could advance using this data set are those concerning environmental stress models of community organization, abundance–occupancy relationships, species co-occurrence, species abundance distributions, dominance and rarity, spatial scales of population and community variation, and distribution of functional and phylogenetic diversity. Use of this data set for academic or educational purposes is allowed as long as the data source is properly cited. When used for academic or educational purposes, this data set should be cited using the title of this Data Paper, the names of the authors, the year of publication, and the corresponding volume and article numbers

Moreover the low frequency sound absorption coefficient (below 100 Hz) has always been difficult to determine and the results coming from different laboratories cannot always be compared.     Nanoporous carbons from hydrothermally treated biomass as anode materials for lithium ion batteries

    Biomass is transformed to carbon nanoparticles with surface-end groups called ‘hydrochar’ (HC) by an efficient and green hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method. Three different approaches are used to introduce porosity to the HC: sole heat treatment, traditional potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation, and environmentally benign magnesium oxide (MgO) templating. All the resulting microporous materials are tested as Li-ion intercalation hosts in lithium cells by using an 1 M LiPF6 in EC/DMC electrolyte solution. They all show stable reversible capacities at elevated current rates (1C), closely comparable to the maximum theoretical capacity of graphite. Among all the materials studied, the HC-MA with a surface area of 150 m2 g1 and obtained by MgO templating of the hydrochar shows the best cycling performance in lithium cell at room temperature (307 mAh g1 at cycle 100 at 1C). The HC-600 with the highest degree of aromaticity/order, lowest content of oxygen functional groups and surface area of 250 m2 g1, obtained by heating the hydrochar at 600 C under inert atmosphere, shows the best power and overall performance with its ability to sustain high discharge/charge rates (1C, 2C, 5C, 10C, 20C). These electrochemical performances attained with materials of reasonable specific surface areas – obtained by green, low cost and practical strategies – can address the space limitations in Li-ion battery applications by improving volumetric energy densities

    The DENORMS Round Robin test: Measurement procedure and post-processing of time data

    The DENORMS Round Robin Test (RRT) is intended to study and improve the techniques used for the determination of the sound absorption coefficient of materials, with particular focus on the low-frequency range and on measurements in reverberation rooms. It is well known that the main reason why it is difficult to extend the frequency range of interest below 100 Hz is the low modal density. The modal behavior of a room is dependent on its geometry and this is one of the reasons why a discrepancy of the results coming from different laboratories can be found even if the same material is tested. This paper describes the measurement procedure developed to allow uniform acquisition and post-processing of acoustic response data of laboratories participating in the RRT, with and without absorbing materials inside. The tests and the post-processing operations performed on the measured data are also discussed in the paper
