What\u27s Sex Got to Do With It - A Cinematic Critique on the Arguments against Same-Sex Marriage

    Get PDF
For years, the same governmental interests have been presented to justify prohibitions on same-sex marriage. Supporters of the ban argue that marriage promotes procreation and child-rearing, neither of which can supposedly be done within the confines of a same-sex relationship. This note suggests the movie I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry illustrates that in practice, these justifications have become antiquated. Instead of defining marriage as two individuals in a committed relationship, courts tend to inject social mores into their decisions regarding the legality of same-sex marriage

The Socialization of Beginning Principals in Louisiana: Organizational Constraints on Innovation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the organizational socialization experiences of beginning principals. This study approached the problem through a mixed methodology strategy of research, using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. A factor analysis of 187 responses to a socialization survey instrument resulted in three components of socialization which were used as the dependent variables in the study. Variation was found in the principals\u27 socialization level, but this variation was not predicted by any of the independent variables. For the dependent variable vision, African-American principals reported higher mean scores than white principals; also, principals in elementary schools showed higher scores than non-elementary school principals. Principals who worked in a different school during the previous year showed a greater dependence on staff than principals promoted from within the school; also, male principals showed a greater dependence on staff than female principals. Six individuals were selected as case study subjects, and were observed and interviewed during their first semester as principals. The six principals were compared on the basis of the primary socialization forces encountered in their work, their response to the socialization process, and their resulting level of socialization. Personal forces such as the principals\u27 philosophy, promotion context, personality, and vision were usually strong and often positive. Organizational forces such as interactions with students, faculty, and the Central Office were sometimes strong and often negative. Four of the six case study principals were found to have custodial responses to the socialization process, while two had innovative responses. Also, variation was found in the principals\u27 socialization level, ranging from the lowest to the middle stages of socialization. The study found that beginning principals in Louisiana have a vision about what they want their schools to be, but constraining forces within the organization often prevent them from placing that vision into action. Because of these constraints, the socialization of beginning principals is a process that is not likely to bring about change or innovation

Methods For Robust Quantification Of Rna Alternative Splicing In Heterogeneous Rna-Seq Datasets

    Get PDF
RNA alternative splicing is primarily responsible for transcriptome diversity and is relevant to human development and disease. However, current approaches to splicing quantication make simplifying assumptions which are violated when RNA sequencing data are heterogeneous. Influences from genetic and environmental background contribute to variability within a group of samples purported to represent the same biological condition. This work describes three methods which account for data heterogeneity when detecting differential RNA splicing between sample groups. First, a robust model is implemented for outlier detection within a group of purported replicates. Next, large RNA-seq datasets with high within-group variability are addressed with a statistical approach which retains power to detect changing splice junctions without sacricing specicity. Finally, applying these tools to call sQTLs in GTEx tissues has identified splicing variations associated with risk loci for cardiovascular disease and anomalous skeletal development. Each of these methods correctly handles the properties of heterogeneous RNA-seq data to improve precision and reduce false discovery rate

How Can We Attract and Retain Quality School Principals: What Do Principals Say?

    Get PDF
Attracting quality personnel for leadership roles as school principals and then retaining their services have become national concerns. Studies reveal that turnover in the principalship at both elementary and secondary schools reached the 50% level during the 1990s, with predictions that such losses are likely to increase during the current decade
