Exact soliton solutions of coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations: Shape changing collisions, logic gates and partially coherent solitons

    Get PDF
The novel dynamical features underlying soliton interactions in coupled nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equations, which model multimode wave propagation under varied physical situations in nonlinear optics, are studied. In this paper, by explicitly constructing multisoliton solutions (upto four-soliton solutions) for two coupled and arbitrary NN-coupled nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equations using the Hirota bilinearization method, we bring out clearly the various features underlying the fascinating shape changing (intensity redistribution) collisions of solitons, including changes in amplitudes, phases and relative separation distances, and the very many possibilities of energy redistributions among the modes of solitons. However in this multisoliton collision process the pair-wise collision nature is shown to be preserved in spite of the changes in the amplitudes and phases of the solitons. Detailed asymptotic analysis also shows that when solitons undergo multiple collisions, there exists the exciting possibility of shape restoration of atleast one soliton during interactions of more than two solitons represented by three and higher order soliton solutions. From application point of view, we have shown from the asymptotic expressions how the amplitude (intensity) redistribution can be written as a generalized linear fractional transformation for the NN-component case. Also we indicate how the multisolitons can be reinterpreted as various logic gates for suitable choices of the soliton parameters, leading to possible multistate logic. In addition, we point out that the various recently studied partially coherent solitons are just special cases of the bright soliton solutions exhibiting shape changing collisions, thereby explaining their variable profile and shape variation in collision process.Comment: 50 Pages, 13 .jpg figures. Furthering alternative cultures of valuation in higher education research

    Get PDF
The value of higher education is often implicit or assumed in educational research. The underlying and antecedent premises that shape and influence debates about value remain unchallenged which perpetuates the dominant, but limiting, terms of the debate and fosters reductionism. I proceed on the premise that analyses of value are not self–supporting or self-referential but are embedded within prevailing cultures of valuation. I contend that challenging, and providing alternatives to, dominant narratives of higher education requires an appreciation of those cultures. I therefore highlight some of the existing cultures of valuation and their influence. I then propose Sayer’s concept of lay normativity as a culture of valuation and discuss how it translates into the practices of research into higher education, specifically the practice of analysis. I animate the discussion by detecting the presence of lay normativity in the evaluative space of the capability approach

Dark soliton states of Bose-Einstein condensates in anisotropic traps

Dark soliton states of Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic traps are studied both analytically and computationally by the direct solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in three dimensions. The ground and self-consistent excited states are found numerically by relaxation in imaginary time. The energy of a stationary soliton in a harmonic trap is shown to be independent of density and geometry for large numbers of atoms. Large amplitude field modulation at a frequency resonant with the energy of a dark soliton is found to give rise to a state with multiple vortices. The Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of the soliton state contains complex frequencies, which disappear for sufficiently small numbers of atoms or large transverse confinement. The relationship between these complex modes and the snake instability is investigated numerically by propagation in real time.Comment: 11 pages, 8 embedded figures (two in color

Heirloom rice in Ifugao: an ‘anti-commodity’ in the process of commodification

    Get PDF
We analyse the marketing of ‘heirloom rices’ produced in the Cordillera mountains of northern Luzon, the Philippines, as the commodification of a historical ‘anti-commodity’. We contend that, historically, rice was produced for social, cultural and spiritual purposes but not primarily for sale or trade. The Ifugaos were able to sustain terraced wet-rice cultivation within a system of ‘escape agriculture’ because they were protected from Spanish interference by the friction of terrain and distance. ‘Heirloom rice’ is a boundary concept that enables social entrepreneurs to commodify traditional landraces. We analyse the implications for local rice production and conservation efforts.Templeton Foundatio

Be our guest/worker: reciprocal dependency and expressions of hospitality in Ni-Vanuatu overseas labour migration

Whilst there has been renewed interest in the development potential of temporary migration programmes, such schemes have long been criticized for creating conditions for exploitation and fostering dependence. In this article, which is based on a case study of Ni-Vanuatu seasonal workers employed in New Zealand’s horticultural industry, I show how workers and employers alike actively cultivate and maintain relations of reciprocal dependence and often describe their relation in familial terms of kinship and hospitality. Nevertheless, workers often feel estranged both in the Marxian sense of being subordinated to a regime of time-discipline, and in the intersubjective sense of feeling disrespected or treated unkindly. I show how attention to the ‘non-contractual element’ in the work contract, including expressions of hospitality, can contribute to anthropological debates surrounding work, migration, and dependence, and to interdisciplinary understandings of the justice of labour migration.ESRC scholarship (project reference ES/H034943/1

Clinical Significance of Circulating Tumor Cells in Hormone Receptor–positive Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients who Received Letrozole with or without Bevacizumab

    Get PDF
Purpose: We evaluated the prognostic and predictive value of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) hormone receptor–positive (HRþ) metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients randomized to letrozole alone or letrozole plus bevacizumab in the first-line setting (CALGB 40503). Experimental Design: Blood samples were collected at pretreatment and three additional time points during therapy. The presence of ≥5 CTCs per 7.5 mL of blood was considered CTC positive. Association of CTCs with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was assessed using Cox regression models. Results: Of 343 patients treated, 294 had CTC data and were included in this analysis. Median follow-up was 39 months. In multivariable analysis, CTC-positive patients at baseline (31%) had significantly reduced PFS [HR, 1.49; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.12–1.97] and OS (HR, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.49–2.93) compared with CTC negative. Failure to clear CTCs during treatment was associated with significantly increased risk of progression (HR, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.58–3.07) and death (HR, 3.4; 95% CI, 2.36–4.88). CTC-positive patients who received only letrozole had the worse PFS (HR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.54–3.47) and OS (HR, 2.6; 95% CI, 1.59–4.40). Median PFS in CTC-positive patients was significantly longer (18.0 vs. 7.0 months) in letrozole plus bevacizumab versus letrozole arm (P ¼ 0.0009). Restricted mean survival time analysis further revealed that addition of bevacizumab was associated with PFS benefit in both CTC-positive and CTC-negative patients, but OS benefit was only observed in CTC-positive patients. Conclusions: CTCs were highly prognostic for the addition of bevacizumab to first-line letrozole in patients with HRþ MBC in CALGB 40503. Further research to determine the potential predictive value of CTCs in this setting is warranted

In Deadly Time: The Lasting On of Waste in Mayhew’s London

    Get PDF
This paper examines the temporal dimension of waste in Henry Mayhew’s London Labour and the London Poor as an instance of how modernity has produced a largely hidden domain of the non-identical and indeterminate. Through a consideration of the phenomena of uselessness, decay and poverty I argue that the temporal dimension of waste is constituted as a corrosive or malign ‘Deadly Time.’ In placing such emphasis on time directed towards death, I aim to show that Mayhew’s undisciplined researches can be seen as a valuable source for understanding why modern thinking struggles to come to terms with waste

'If You Desire to Enjoy Life, Avoid Unpunctual People': Women, Timetabling and Domestic Advice, 1850–1910

In the second half of the nineteenth century domestic advice manuals applied the language of modern, public time management to the private sphere. This article uses domestic advice and cookery books, including Isabella Beeton's Book of Household Management, to argue that women in the home operated within multiple, overlapping temporalities that incorporated daily, annual, linear and cyclical scales. I examine how seasonal and annual timescales coexisted with the ticking clock of daily time as a framework within which women were instructed to organize their lives in order to conclude that the increasing concern of advice writers with matters of timekeeping and punctuality towards the end of the nineteenth century indicates not the triumph of 'clock time' but rather its failure to overturn other ways of thinking about and using time
