    Russian Early Geographic Exploration and Encounters in the North Pacific

    This article examines the earliest Russian geographic and nautical exploration of the North Pacific and Japan’s Northern Territories and their importance within the context of global history, and also in comparison to similar research which Russians conducted in Central Asia. The author identifies some historically significant explorative expeditions and travelers from the Russian Empire to the region, and includes descriptions of their initial findings. It is argued that Russian early efforts to explore the area were somewhat haphazard and did not follow a clearly-orchestrated pattern or objective, which made explorations both infrequent and somewhat sporadic. There is also discussions of some of the outcomes of these explorations, which included cross-cultural encounters with both Japanese people and other peoples of the North Pacific, including the Kamchadals and the Ainu

    Comparative Colonialism : Russia in the North Pacific and Central Asia

    This article is a comparative analysis of Russian colonialism in the North Pacific and in Central Asia. The Russian Empire exhibited a similar overall approach to the colonization of both regions during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This paper compares the interests in both regions, the means of colonization, and the outcomes of these processes. Attention is paid in the article to the important roles which overland and sea exploration, settler colonialism, and other factors had in the process. Although the overall approach to colonization was similar, the outcomes of these processes led to quite distinct results.     Balance Functions, Correlations, Charge Fluctuations and Interferometry

    Connections between charge balance functions, charge fluctuations and correlations are presented. It is shown that charge fluctuations can be directly expressed in terms of a balance functions under certain assumptions.     Evaluation of the Theoretical Uncertainties in the Z to ll Cross Sections at the LHC

    We study the sources of systematic errors in the measurement of the Z to ll cross-sections at the LHC. We consider the systematic errors in both the total cross-section and acceptance for anticipated experimental cuts. We include the best available analysis of QCD effects at NNLO in assessing the effect of higher order corrections and PDF and scale uncertainties on the theoretical acceptance. In addition, we evaluate the error due to missing NLO electroweak corrections and propose which MC generators and computational schemes should be implemented to best simulate the events.Comment: 23 pages, 52 eps figures, LaTeX with JHEP3.cls, epsfig.     Outcomes in Combined Anterior and Posterior Fusion for 3- and 4-Level Degenerative Lumbar Disc Disease

    Introduction. This study reported the clinical and functionaloutcomes in a consecutive series of patients with3- or 4-level degenerative disc disease (DDD) betweenvertebral levels L2 to S1, who were treated with combinedanterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and posteriorspinal fusion at one-year and two-year follow-ups. Methods. A retrospective chart review was performed on allpatients who underwent long segment fusion for DDD by asingle surgeon between August 2002 and January 2012. Fiftyfivepatients were identified and 32 had complete charts for review(14 had one-year follow-up and 18 two-year follow-up).In addition to demographic data, disability (Oswestry DisabilityIndex, ODI), pain level (Visual Analog Scale, VAS), andflexion-extension range-of-motion were measured pre- andpost-operatively. Operative data also were collected, includingoperative time, blood loss, surgical implants used, surgicalapproach, operative levels treated, and complications.Results. Both VAS and ODI improved significantly postoperatively.The average VAS score improved from 6.5 ± 1.5(range: 4 - 9) to 4.4 ± 1.7 (range: 2 - 7) for one-year follow-up,and 7.0 ± 1.8 (range: 4 - 10) to 4.4 ± 2.6 (range: 1 - 9) for twoyearfollow-up. For one-year follow-up, the average ODI scoreimproved from 53 ± 19% (range: 18 - 70%) to 37 ± 17% (range:12 - 64%), and for two-year follow-up, the average improvedfrom 53 ± 18% (range: 18 - 80%) to 31 ± 24% (range: 2 - 92%).The level of improvement in pain and function was similar topreviously published data for 1- and 2-level fusions, but overallpain and function scores were worse in this study group. Conclusions. Arthrodesis for 3- and 4-level DDD is, on average,a successful surgery that shows clinically significantimprovements in function and pain similar to fusionfor 1- and 2-levels with low rates of re-operation. Patientswith involvement of 3- or 4-levels have higher disabilityand pain both pre- and post-operatively compared to shorterfusion level involvement. KS J Med 2016;9(3):50-53

    Maximum Running Speed of Captive Bar-Headed Geese Is Unaffected by Severe Hypoxia

    While bar-headed geese are renowned for migration at high altitude over the Himalayas, previous work on captive birds suggested that these geese are unable to maintain rates of oxygen consumption while running in severely hypoxic conditions. To investigate this paradox, we re-examined the running performance and heart rates of bar-headed geese and barnacle geese (a low altitude species) during exercise in hypoxia. Bar-headed geese (n = 7) were able to run at maximum speeds (determined in normoxia) for 15 minutes in severe hypoxia (7% O2; simulating the hypoxia at 8500 m) with mean heart rates of 466±8 beats min�1. Barnacle geese (n = 10), on the other hand, were unable to complete similar trials in severe hypoxia and their mean heart rate (316 beats.min�1) was significantly lower than bar-headed geese. In bar-headed geese, partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide in both arterial and mixed venous blood were significantly lower during hypoxia than normoxia, both at rest and while running. However, measurements of blood lactate in bar-headed geese suggested that anaerobic metabolism was not a major energy source during running in hypoxia. We combined these data with values taken from the literature to estimate (i) oxygen supply, using the Fick equation and (ii) oxygen demand using aerodynamic theory for bar-headed geese flying aerobically, and under their own power, at altitude. This analysis predicts that the maximum altitude at which geese can transport enough oxygen to fly without environmental assistance ranges from 6,800 m to 8,900 m altitude, depending on the parameters used in the model but that such flights should be rare

    High CIP2A levels correlate with an antiapoptotic phenotype that can be overcome by targeting BCL-XL in chronic myeloid leukemia.

    Cancerous inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A (CIP2A) is a predictive biomarker of disease progression in many malignancies, including imatinib-treated chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Although high CIP2A levels correlate with disease progression in CML, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. In a screen of diagnostic chronic phase samples from patients with high and low CIP2A protein levels, high CIP2A levels correlate with an antiapoptotic phenotype, characterized by downregulation of proapoptotic BCL-2 family members, including BIM, PUMA and HRK, and upregulation of the antiapoptotic protein BCL-XL. These results suggest that the poor prognosis of patients with high CIP2A levels is due to an antiapoptotic phenotype. Disrupting this antiapoptotic phenotype by inhibition of BCL-XL via RNA interference or A-1331852, a novel, potent and BCL-XL-selective inhibitor, resulted in extensive apoptosis either alone or in combination with imatinib, dasatinib or nilotinib, both in cell lines and in primary CD34(+) cells from patients with high levels of CIP2A. These results demonstrate that BCL-XL is the major antiapoptotic survival protein and may be a novel therapeutic target in CML

    From M-ary Query to Bit Query: a new strategy for efficient large-scale RFID identification

    The tag collision avoidance has been viewed as one of the most important research problems in RFID communications and bit tracking technology has been widely embedded in query tree (QT) based algorithms to tackle such challenge. Existing solutions show further opportunity to greatly improve the reading performance because collision queries and empty queries are not fully explored. In this paper, a bit query (BQ) strategy based Mary query tree protocol (BQMT) is presented, which can not only eliminate idle queries but also separate collided tags into many small subsets and make full use of the collided bits. To further optimize the reading performance, a modified dual prefixes matching (MDPM) mechanism is presented to allow multiple tags to respond in the same slot and thus significantly reduce the number of queries. Theoretical analysis and simulations are supplemented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed BQMT and MDPM, which outperform the existing QT-based algorithms. Also, the BQMT and MDPM can be combined to BQMDPM to improve the reading performance in system efficiency, total identification time, communication complexity and average energy cost
