Hamiltonian mappings and circle packing phase spaces
We introduce three area preserving maps with phase space structures which
resemble circle packings. Each mapping is derived from a kicked Hamiltonian
system with one of three different phase space geometries (planar, hyperbolic
or spherical) and exhibits an infinite number of coexisting stable periodic

A simple example of "Quantum Darwinism": Redundant information storage in many-spin environments
As quantum information science approaches the goal of constructing quantum
computers, understanding loss of information through decoherence becomes
increasingly important. The information about a system that can be obtained
from its environment can facilitate quantum control and error correction.
Moreover, observers gain most of their information indirectly, by monitoring
(primarily photon) environments of the "objects of interest." Exactly how this
information is inscribed in the environment is essential for the emergence of
"the classical" from the quantum substrate. In this paper, we examine how
many-qubit (or many-spin) environments can store information about a single
system. The information lost to the environment can be stored redundantly, or
it can be encoded in entangled modes of the environment. We go on to show that
randomly chosen states of the environment almost always encode the information
so that an observer must capture a majority of the environment to deduce the
system's state. Conversely, in the states produced by a typical decoherence
process, information about a particular observable of the system is stored
redundantly. This selective proliferation of "the fittest information" (known
as Quantum Darwinism) plays a key role in choosing the preferred, effectively
classical observables of macroscopic systems. The developing appreciation that
the environment functions not just as a garbage dump, but as a communication
channel, is extending our understanding of the environment's role in the

Suggestion, hypnosis and hypnotherapy: a survey of use, knowledge and attitudes of anaesthetists
Publisher's copy made available with the permission of the publisher © Australian Society of AnaesthetistsClinical hypnosis is a skill of using words and gestures (frequently called suggestions) in particular ways to achieve specific outcomes. It is being increasingly recognised as a useful intervention for managing a range of symptoms, especially pain and anxiety. We surveyed all 317 South Australian Fellows and trainees registered with ANZCA to determine their use, knowledge of, and attitudes towards positive suggestion, hypnosis and hypnotherapy in their anaesthesia practice. The response rate was 218 anaesthetists (69%). The majority of respondents (63%) rated their level of knowledge on this topic as below average. Forty-eight per cent of respondents indicated that there was a role for hypnotherapy in clinical anaesthesia, particularly in areas seen as traditional targets for the modality, i.e. pain and anxiety states. Nearly half of the anaesthetists supported the use of hypnotherapy and positive suggestions within clinical anaesthesia. Those respondents who had experience of clinical hypnotherapy were more likely to support hypnosis teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level when compared with those with no experience.http://www.aaic.net.au/Article.asp?D=200408
Preparation and ferroelectric properties of (124)-oriented SrBi4Ti4O15 ferroelectric thin film on (110)-oriented LaNiO3 electrode
A (124)-oriented SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBTi) ferroelectric thin film with high volume
fraction of {\alpha}SBTi(124)=97% was obtained using a metal organic
decomposition process on SiO2/Si substrate coated by (110)-oriented LaNiO3
(LNO) thin film. The remanent polarization and coercive field for
(124)-oriented SBTi film are 12.1 {\mu}C/cm2 and 74 kV/cm, respectively. No
evident fatigue of (124)-oriented SBTi thin film can be observed after
1{\times}10e9 switching cycles. Besides, the (124)-oriented SBTi film can be
uniformly polarized over large areas using a piezoelectric-mode atomic force
microscope. Considering that the annealing temperature was 650{\deg}C and the
thickness of each deposited layer was merely 30 nm, a long-range epitaxial
relationship between SBTi(124) and LNO(110) facets was proposed. The epitaxial

Cluster Masses Accounting for Structure along the Line of Sight
Weak gravitational lensing of background galaxies by foreground clusters
offers an excellent opportunity to measure cluster masses directly without
using gas as a probe. One source of noise which seems difficult to avoid is
large scale structure along the line of sight. Here I show that, by using
standard map-making techniques, one can minimize the deleterious effects of
this noise. The resulting uncertainties on cluster masses are significantly
smaller than when large scale structure is not properly accounted for, although
still larger than if it was absent altogether.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Electronic structure and ferroelectricity in SrBi2Ta2O9
The electronic structure of SrBi2Ta2O9 is investigated from first-principles,
within the local density approximation, using the full-potential linearized
augmented plane wave (LAPW) method. The results show that, besides the large
Ta(5d)-O(2p) hybridization which is a common feature of the ferroelectric
perovskites, there is an important hybridization between bismuth and oxygen
states. The underlying static potential for the ferroelectric distortion and
the primary source for ferroelectricity is investigated by a lattice-dynamics

The Reduced Folate Carrier (SLC19A1) c.80G>A Polymorphism is associated with red cell folate concentrations among women
Low folate status may be a consequence of suboptimal intake, transport or cellular utilization of folate and, together with elevated homocysteine, is a recognized risk factor/marker for several human pathologies. As folate transport across cell membranes is mediated in part by the reduced folate carrier (RFC1), variants within this gene may influence disease risk via an effect on folate and/or homocysteine levels. The present study was undertaken to assess the association between the SLC19A1 (RFC1) c.80G>A polymorphism and folate/homocysteine concentrations in healthy young adults from Northern Ireland. The SLC19A1 c.80G>A polymorphism was not strongly associated with either serum folate or homocysteine concentrations in either men or women. However, in women, but not in men, this polymorphism explained 5% of the variation in red blood cell (RBC) folate levels (P=0.02). Relative to women with the SLC19A1 c.80GG genotype, women with the GA and AA genotypes had higher RBC folate concentrations. Consequently, compared to women with the SLC19A1 c.80AA and GA genotypes, women who are homozygous for the 80G allele may be at increased risk of having a child affected with a neural tube defect and of developing pathologies that have been associated with folate insufficiency, such as cardiovascular disease
Crop supply dynamics and the illusion of partial adjustment
We use field-level data to estimate the response of corn and soybean acreage to price shocks. Our sample contains more than eight million observations derived from satellite imagery and includes every field in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. We estimate that aggregate crop acreage responds more to price shocks in the short run than in the long run, and we show theoretically how the benefits of crop rotation generate this response pattern. In essence, farmers who change crops due to a price shock have an incentive to switch back to the previous crop to capture the benefits of crop rotation. Our result contradicts the long-held belief that agricultural supply responds gradually to price shocks through partial adjustment. We would not have obtained this result had we used county-level panel data. Standard econometric methods applied to county-level data produce estimates consistent with partial adjustment. We show that this apparent partial adjustment is illusory, and we demonstrate how it arises from the fact that fields in the same county are more similar to each other than to fields in other counties. This result underscores the importance of using models with appropriate micro-foundations and cautions against inferring micro-level rigidities from inertia in aggregate panel data. Our preferred estimate of the own-price long-run elasticity of corn acreage is 0.29 and the cross-price elasticity is -0.22. The corresponding elasticities for soybean acreage are 0.26 and -0.33. Our estimated short-run elasticities are 37 percent larger than their long-run counterparts
The Five Factor Model of personality and evaluation of drug consumption risk
The problem of evaluating an individual's risk of drug consumption and misuse
is highly important. An online survey methodology was employed to collect data
including Big Five personality traits (NEO-FFI-R), impulsivity (BIS-11),
sensation seeking (ImpSS), and demographic information. The data set contained
information on the consumption of 18 central nervous system psychoactive drugs.
Correlation analysis demonstrated the existence of groups of drugs with
strongly correlated consumption patterns. Three correlation pleiades were
identified, named by the central drug in the pleiade: ecstasy, heroin, and
benzodiazepines pleiades. An exhaustive search was performed to select the most
effective subset of input features and data mining methods to classify users
and non-users for each drug and pleiad. A number of classification methods were
employed (decision tree, random forest, -nearest neighbors, linear
discriminant analysis, Gaussian mixture, probability density function
estimation, logistic regression and na{\"i}ve Bayes) and the most effective
classifier was selected for each drug. The quality of classification was
surprisingly high with sensitivity and specificity (evaluated by leave-one-out
cross-validation) being greater than 70\% for almost all classification tasks.
The best results with sensitivity and specificity being greater than 75\% were
achieved for cannabis, crack, ecstasy, legal highs, LSD, and volatile substance
