    An Examination of Response Requirements Associated with Teachers\u27 use of Different Opportunities for Student Response During Instruction

    Providing effective instruction that increases the degree to which students are engaged with the instructional content has been identified as a research-based practice in that it is associated with positive academic and behavioral outcomes. One high-leverage practice for engaging students is the provision of opportunities to respond (OTR) during instruction. However, previous research has shown that teachers at every level typically use OTRs at rates far below research-based recommendations. This study adds to the literature by breaking OTRs into verbal, non-verbal, and partner categories to further examine how teachers typically foster student engagement. Across 1095 total observations, OTR rates were observed to be higher than previous research. However, teachers at every level were found to use simple verbal questioning greater than 75% of the of the time they provided an engagement opportunity. A discussion focuses on what this implies for students with verbal deficits and on practical implications and areas for future research

    Effects of Performance Feedback on High School Teachers’ Use of Opportunities to Respond and Positive Feedback: Considering Efficiency in High Need Schools

    The transition into high school presents new challenges for adolescents and performance in ninth grade is highly predictive of success throughout the remainder of high school. However, focus on teacher performance has great promise for increasing student engagement in the classroom and raising student achievement. Unfortunately, many of these practices typically are not implemented within classrooms where students are at highest risk for failure. Two studies were implemented to examine the effect of simple performance feedback strategies as a means of increasing teachers’ provision of opportunities for student responses and positive feedback during instruction. Results showed no effect in teacher behavior as a result of performance feedback. A discussion considers the implications of high need schools, efficiency, and the necessary and sufficient strategies for changing teacher behavior

    Feasibility Study for Detection and Quantification of Corrosion in Bridge Barrier Rails

    Technical challenges exist with infrastructure that can be addressed by nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods, such as detecting corrosion damage to reinforcing steel that anchor concrete bridge railings to bridge road decks. Moisture and chloride ions reach the anchors along the cold joint between the rails and deck, causing corrosion that weakens the anchors and ultimately the barriers. The Center for Nondestructive Evaluation at Iowa State University has experience in development of measurement techniques and new sensors using a variety of interrogating energies. This research evaluated feasibility of three technologies—x-ray radiation, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and magnetic flux leakage (MFL)—for detection and quantification of corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel. Controlled samples containing pristine reinforcing steel with and without epoxy and reinforcing steel with 25 percent and 50 percent section reduction were embedded in concrete at 2.5 in. deep for laboratory evaluation. Two of the techniques, GPR and MFL, were used in a limited field test on the Iowa Highway 210 Bridge over Interstate 35 in Story County. The methods provide useful and complementary information. GPR provides a rapid approach to identify reinforcing steel that has anomalous responses. MFL provides similar detection responses but could be optimized to provide more quantitative correlation to actual condition. Full implementation could use either GPR or MFL methods to identify areas of concern, followed by radiography to give a visual image of the actual condition, providing the final guidance for maintenance actions

These complexes were subsequently mass isolated in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer and then irradiated by the tunable infrared output of a free electron laser in the 800-1600 cm−1 range. From the frequency dependence of the fragmentation of the complexes, vibrational signatures of the complexes were obtained. Computational work carried out in parallel reveals that the complexes formed are very strongly bound and are among the most strongly bound complexes of Na+ and Cl− ever observed with molecular species. The dipole moment calculated for the heaxafluorocyclohexane is very large (~7 D) and it appears that the bonding in each of the complexes has a significant electrostatic contribution.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Diffusion of In0.53Ga0.47As elements through hafnium oxide during post deposition annealing

    Diffusion of indium through HfO2 after post deposition annealing in N-2 or forming gas environments is observed in HfO2/In0.53Ga0.47As stacks by low energy ion scattering and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy and found to be consistent with changes in interface layer thickness observed by transmission electron microscopy. Prior to post processing, arsenic oxide is detected at the surface of atomic layer deposition-grown HfO2 and is desorbed upon annealing at 350 degrees C. Reduction of the interfacial layer thickness and potential densification of HfO2, resulting from indium diffusion upon annealing, is confirmed by an increase in capacitance.     The physicochemical properties of [Trpn–H]− and [Trpn⋯Cl]− (n = 1, 2) have been investigated in a combined computational and experimental infrared multiple dissociation (IRMPD) study. IRMPD spectra within the 850–1900 cm−1 region indicate that deprotonation is localized on the carboxylic acid moiety in [Trpn–H]− clusters. A combination of hydrogen bonding and higher order charge–quadrupole interactions appear to influence cluster geometries for all investigated systems. Calculated global minimum and low energy geometries of [Trp⋯Cl]− and [Trp2⋯Cl]− clusters favour coordination of the halide by the indole NH.     The structures and properties of proton- and alkali-bound cysteine dimers

    The proton-, lithium-, and sodium-bound cysteine dimers have been investigated in a joint computational and experimental infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) study. IRMPD spectra in the 1000–2000 cm−1 region show that protonation is localized on an amine group, and that intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurs between the protonated amine and the carbonyl oxygen of the neutral Cys moiety. Alkali-bound dimers adopt structures reminiscent of those observed for the monomeric Cys·Li+ and Cys·Na+ species. Calculations of the heavier Cys2·M+ (M = K, Rb or Cs) species suggest that these are significantly less strongly bound than the lighter (M = H, Li, or Na) dimers.We gratefully acknowledge high performance computing support from the SHARCNET consortium of Compute Canada.
