    Geochemical heterogeneity of sand deposits and its implications for the provenance determination of Roman glass

    During the production of natron glass most features of the raw materials are lost and only some bulk geochemical characteristics have potential as provenance indicators. To determine the primary origin of archaeological glass artefacts, suitable sand raw materials have to be accurately characterised. In this respect, information about the possible variation in geochemical properties within a silica source is also vital to account for potential (partial) overlap of different sources. In this study, it is shown that the variation in major and minor elemental composition of beach sand on a local scale is smaller than the variation in Roman natron glass. Therefore, a single sand deposit can be seen as a relatively homogeneous source of silica for glass production. Nd isotopic signatures are identical for all samples analysed.     Redesigning the Basic Communication Course: A Case Study

    In the competitive environment of higher education, the basic communication course is under pressure to defend its place in the curriculum. One way to do this is to engage in a course redesign program. In this case study, we detail our experience taking part in such a program to (re)evaluate our course. Over the course of a year, we collected active participation data and conducted a series of three qualitative surveys that focused on student perceptions of our course. In doing so, we explored the ways in which the basic communication course can take advantage of course redesign efforts. Specifically, we found that we were better able to (1) articulate our unique course identity to constituents across the campus as we (2) developed a more holistic view of the ways we were (or were not) achieving our stated learning outcomes. Based on these findings, we developed practical implications including explicating how a well-planned course redesign program can be used in the basic communication course, the need for “collaborative consistency” when redesigning a course, and the imperative to incorporate student voice into redesign efforts

    Mapping EU support for sanitation in Africa

    This study addresses a number of key concerns of AMCOW, the European Union (EU) and other donors around the need to increase support to sanitation in order to accelerate the progress of national plans, Africawide goals, and the attainment of the MDG target on sanitation. The purpose of the study is to obtain an overview of the status of the involvement of EU Member States and the European Commission in sanitation-related activities in Africa. It is anticipated that the findings of this work will have the potential to be used for both arguing for greater priority for sanitation within the international architecture and also for individual donors to use in discussing their own Official Development Assistance (ODA). The work is complementary to the report from 2008 on mapping EU development assistance to the water sector in Africa. This earlier report had a much wider remit and as such, the Sanitation Mapping report can be considered as being supplementary to it

    European Union support for sanitation in sub-Saharan Africa: aid flows and effectiveness

    Within sub-Saharan Africa, 569 million people, amounting to 69% of the population, do not use improved sanitation. This study presents an overview of European Union (EU) donor support to sanitation in sub-Saharan Africa and proposes a method for investigating the effectiveness of national sanitation programmes through linking aid flows to sanitation outcomes in terms of trends in open defecation; this can be used to locate the relative performance of different countries. The work addresses key concerns of the African Ministers' Council on Water and the European donors around the need to increase support to sanitation. Results show that EU donors are the major source of external finance for sanitation in sub-Saharan Africa. Case studies from Mozambique, Uganda and Burkina Faso show that the majority of national planned expenditure on sanitation comes from donor sources, with EU donors being the substantive contributors. National policies on subsidy for sanitation and expenditure allocations vary extremely widely and do not necessarily align with sanitation outcomes. EU member states' donor policies on sanitation are consistent and well-aligned with those of the African Union; this is a major achievement for Europe and Africa. Inadequate national monitoring of sanitation expenditure remains a constraint to determining programme effectiveness

    This Toolbox is a guide to targeting, designing and implementing gully and stream bank erosion control activities in Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchments. This third edition builds on 7 years of implementing these activities in multiple programs and it aims to inform the ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of fine sediment and associated nutrients delivered to the GBR lagoon. Sub‑soil erosion, predominantly from gullies and stream banks, contributes the vast bulk of the fine sediment load delivered to the GBR. The large area and extensive erosion in GBR catchments, and the limited resources available, make it important for erosion control to be targeted to cost‑effective sites and implemented using best practice based on best available information. Landholder support and site maintenance increase the likelihood that sediment reductions will persist over the long term

    Background: Amenorrhea and extraplacental production of serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), particularly in young women, can mimic a pregnancy of unknown location. Elevated serum hCG in the absence of pregnancy can pose a diagnostic dilemma and has led to potentially harmful and unwarranted interventions including chemotherapeutic agents like methotrexate or have led to delay in necessary medical interventions in women. We report a case to demonstrate that amenorrhea and extraplacental human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) production in young women can mimic a pregnancy of unknown location. Furthermore, we performed a critical review of literature on pituitary hCG production. Case: A 38-year-old woman with a diagnosis of Silver-Russell syndrome, a unicornuate uterus, history of right oophorectomy for a benign serous cystadenoma and a desire for pregnancy presenting with a provisional diagnosis of pregnancy of unknown location.After performing a thorough review of history, physical examination, ultrasound exams, and a review of hormone analysis [including hCG, Tumor markers, Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), Estradiol (E2) levels], we confirmed the diagnosis of premature ovarian insufficiency and pituitary hCG production. Conclusions: In women, serum levels of hCG may increase with age, and are not always an indicator of pregnancy. Therefore, it is imperative to interpret false-positive test results and rule out the extraplacental production of hCG. This will help prevent unnecessary surgical procedures and treatment, including chemotherapy

    Global increases in both common and rare copy number load associated with autism.

    Children with autism have an elevated frequency of large, rare copy number variants (CNVs). However, the global load of deletions or duplications, per se, and their size, location and relationship to clinical manifestations of autism have not been documented. We examined CNV data from 516 individuals with autism or typical development from the population-based Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) study. We interrogated 120 regions flanked by segmental duplications (genomic hotspots) for events >50 kbp and the entire genomic backbone for variants >300 kbp using a custom targeted DNA microarray. This analysis was complemented by a separate study of five highly dynamic hotspots associated with autism or developmental delay syndromes, using a finely tiled array platform (>1 kbp) in 142 children matched for gender and ethnicity. In both studies, a significant increase in the number of base pairs of duplication, but not deletion, was associated with autism. Significantly elevated levels of CNV load remained after the removal of rare and likely pathogenic events. Further, the entire CNV load detected with the finely tiled array was contributed by common variants. The impact of this variation was assessed by examining the correlation of clinical outcomes with CNV load. The level of personal and social skills, measured by Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, negatively correlated (Spearman's r = -0.13, P = 0.034) with the duplication CNV load for the affected children; the strongest association was found for communication (P = 0.048) and socialization (P = 0.022) scores.
