Language Attitudes And Gender: Descriptors And Nationalistic Ideologies

The present study explores language attitudes among 23 English language learners of Spanish enrolled in elementary Spanish. The data elicited from these participants were analyzed to see whether females used more positive adjectives to describe the Spanish language than their male counterparts (as shown in previous studies). The data were also analyzed to see whether the participants’ adjectives and comments supported evidence of nationalistic language ideology. The results mirrored those of past studies: females were more likely to describe Spanish with positive adjectives. Additionally, there was a great amount of nationalistic language ideology and ethnocentrism among the participants who felt negatively toward Spanish. The researcher argues that this may have contributed towards negative language ideologies reported by the participants

Zusammenfassung: Die Prävalenz umschriebener Rechenstörungen ist etwa ebenso hoch wie die der Lese-Rechtschreib-Störungen. Komorbide psychische Störungen, v.a. Ängste, depressive Symptome und ADHD, sind besonders häufig. Die Entstehungs- und Verlaufsbedingungen sind noch weniger gut erforscht als bei der Legasthenie. Spezifisch Zahlen verarbeitende Hirnfunktionen sind sowohl sprachlich als auch visuell-räumlich determiniert und in verschiedenen Hirnregionen lokalisiert. Es kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass bei Kindern mit Rechenstörungen die Prozesse des Aufbaus und der Vernetzung entsprechender neuronaler Strukturen durch Einflüsse aus Anlage und Umwelt behindert werden. Daraus resultieren unterschiedliche Subtypen von mathematischen Lernschwierigkeiten. Individuell angepasste, möglichst schulnahe Therapie- und Fördermaßnahmen müssen auf einer frühzeitigen, inhaltsspezifischen und neuropsychologischen Diagnostik basiere

Microwave Synthesis Under Solvent-Free Conditions and Spectral Studies of Some Mesoporphyrinic Complexes

A series of A<sub>3</sub>B and A<sub>4</sub> type mesoporphyrinic complexes were synthesized with superior yields using microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions. The structures of the complexes were confirmed using elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis, EPR and NMR spectral data. The influence of environmental polarity on spectral properties of the mesoporphyrinic complexes was investigated. The obtained results indicate that the shape of absorption and fluorescence spectra does not depend on the solvent polarity under the experimental conditions used. The small shifts of the absorption and emission maximums that occur by increasing of solvent polarity reflects the physical<strong> </strong>interaction between the porphyrinic substituents and the solvent molecules
