    Pulling and Stretching a Molecular Wire to Tune its Conductance

    A scanning tunnelling microscope is used to pull a polythiophene wire from a Au(111) surface while measuring the current traversing the junction. Abrupt current increases measured during the lifting procedure are associated to the detachment of molecular sub-units, in apparent contradiction with the expected exponential decrease of the conductance with wire length. \textit{Ab initio} simulations reproduce the experimental data and demonstrate that this unexpected behavior is due to release of mechanical stress in the wire, paving the way to mechanically gated single-molecule electronic devices

    Thermal-based modeling of coupled carbon, water, and energy fluxes using nominal light use efficiencies constrained by leaf chlorophyll observations

    Recent studies have shown that estimates of leaf chlorophyll content (Chl), defined as the combined mass of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b per unit leaf area, can be useful for constraining estimates of canopy light use efficiency (LUE). Canopy LUE describes the amount of carbon assimilated by a vegetative canopy for a given amount of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and is a key parameter for modeling land-surface carbon fluxes. A carbonenabled version of the remote-sensing-based two-source energy balance (TSEB) model simulates coupled canopy transpiration and carbon assimilation using an analytical submodel of canopy resistance constrained by inputs of nominal LUE (ÎČn), which is modulated within the model in response to varying conditions in light, humidity, ambient CO2 concentration, and temperature. Soil moisture constraints on water and carbon exchange are conveyed to the TSEB-LUE indirectly through thermal infrared measurements of landsurface temperature. We investigate the capability of using Chl estimates for capturing seasonal trends in the canopy ÎČn from in situ measurements of Chl acquired in irrigated and rain-fed fields of soybean and maize near Mead, Nebraska. The results show that field-measured Chl is nonlinearly related to ÎČn, with variability primarily related to phenological changes during early growth and senescence. Utilizing seasonally varying ÎČn inputs based on an empirical relationship with in situ measured Chl resulted in improvements in carbon flux estimates from the TSEB model, while adjusting the partitioning of total water loss between plant transpiration and soil evaporation. The observed Chl– ÎČn relationship provides a functional mechanism for integrating remotely sensed Chl into the TSEB model, with the potential for improved mapping of coupled carbon, water, and energy fluxes across vegetated landscapes

    Interoception and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia in Gambling Disorder

The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this recordGambling has long-standing links with excitement and physiological arousal, but prior research has not considered i) gamblers’ ability to detect internal physiological signals, or ii) markers of parasympathetic functioning. The present study measured interoception in individuals with gambling disorder, using selfreport measures and a heart beat counting task administered at rest. Resting state Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), an index of heart rate variability, was measured as a proxy for parasympathetic control and emotional regulation capacity. In a case-control design, 50 individuals with gambling disorder were compared against 35 controls without gambling problems. Participants completed two self-report measures of bodily awareness and a behavioural test of heart beat counting. A resting state electrocardiogram (five minutes) was used to calculate RSA. There were no significant differences on the self-report or behavioral interoception probes. The group with gambling disorder displayed significantly reduced RSA, which at face value is consistent with reduced parasympathetic control. However, the group difference in RSA did not survive controlling for age and smoking status, as established predictors of heart rate variability. Our findings do not support any changes in interoceptive processing in people with gambling disorder, at least under resting conditions.     Effects of the bias enhanced nucleation hot-filament chemical-vapor deposition parameters on diamond nucleation on iridium

    The effects of the bias current density and the filament-to-substrate distance on the nucleation of diamond on iridium buffer layers were investigated in a hot-filament chemical-vapor deposition (HFCVD) reactor. The nucleation density increased by several orders of magnitude with the raise of the bias current density. According to high-resolution field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy observation, diamond nuclei formed during bias-enhanced nucleation (BEN) did not show any preferred oriented growth. Moreover, the first-nearest-neighbor distance distribution was consistent with a random nucleation mechanism. This occurrence suggested that the diffusion of carbon species at the substrate surface was not the predominant mechanism taking place during BEN in the HFCVD process. This fact was attributed to the formation of a graphitic layer prior to diamond nucleation. We also observed that the reduction of the filament sample distance during BEN was helpful for diamond growth. This nucleation behavior was different from the one previously reported in the case of BEN-microwave chemical-vapor deposition experiments on iridium and has been tentatively explained by taking into account the specific properties and limitations of the HFCVD technique

    The Impact of Inpatient Boarding on ED Efficiency: A Discrete-Event Simulation Study

    In this study, a discrete-event simulation approach was used to model Emergency Department’s (ED) patient flow to investigate the effect of inpatient boarding on the ED efficiency in terms of the National Emergency Department Crowding Scale (NEDOCS) score and the rate of patients who leave without being seen (LWBS). The decision variable in this model was the boarder-released-ratio defined as the ratio of admitted patients whose boarding time is zero to all admitted patients. Our analysis shows that the Overcrowded+ (a NEDOCS score over 100) ratio decreased from 88.4% to 50.4%, and the rate of LWBS patients decreased from 10.8% to 8.4% when the boarder-released-ratio changed from 0% to 100%. These results show that inpatient boarding significantly impacts both the NEDOCS score and the rate of LWBS patient and this analysis provides a quantification of the impact of boarding on emergency department patient crowding

    From PALSA PLUS to PALM PLUS: adapting and developing a South African guideline and training intervention to better integrate HIV/AIDS care with primary care in rural health centers in Malawi

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Only about one-third of eligible HIV/AIDS patients receive anti-retroviral treatment (ART). Decentralizing treatment is crucial to wider and more equitable access, but key obstacles are a shortage of trained healthcare workers (HCW) and challenges integrating HIV/AIDS care with other primary care. This report describes the development of a guideline and training program (PALM PLUS) designed to integrate HIV/AIDS care with other primary care in Malawi. PALM PLUS was adapted from PALSA PLUS, developed in South Africa, and targets middle-cadre HCWs (clinical officers, nurses, and medical assistants). We adapted it to align with Malawi's national treatment protocols, more varied healthcare workforce, and weaker health system infrastructure.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The international research team included the developers of the PALSA PLUS program, key Malawi-based team members and personnel from national and district level Ministry of Health (MoH), professional associations, and an international non-governmental organization. The PALSA PLUS guideline was extensively revised based on Malawi national disease-specific guidelines. Advice and input was sought from local clinical experts, including middle-cadre personnel, as well as Malawi MoH personnel and representatives of Malawian professional associations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>An integrated guideline adapted to Malawian protocols for adults with respiratory conditions, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and other primary care conditions was developed. The training program was adapted to Malawi's health system and district-level supervision structure. PALM PLUS is currently being piloted in a cluster-randomized trial in health centers in Malawi (ISRCTN47805230).</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The PALM PLUS guideline and training intervention targets primary care middle-cadre HCWs with the objective of improving HCW satisfaction and retention, and the quality of patient care. Successful adaptations are feasible, even across health systems as different as those of South Africa and Malawi.</p

    Anomalous behavior of the near-threshold photoionization cross section of the neon isoelectronic sequence: a combined experimental and theoretical study

    We present a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of photoionization along the Ne isoelectronic sequence and show that the near-threshold behavior of the cross section for Si4+ differs radically from the nearby ions in the sequence. We demonstrate that the general nature of the underlying physics implies that dramatic changes in near-threshold behavior may be expected for many other ions

    Personalized online information search and visualization

    BACKGROUND: The rapid growth of online publications such as the Medline and other sources raises the questions how to get the relevant information efficiently. It is important, for a bench scientist, e.g., to monitor related publications constantly. It is also important, for a clinician, e.g., to access the patient records anywhere and anytime. Although time-consuming, this kind of searching procedure is usually similar and simple. Likely, it involves a search engine and a visualization interface. Different words or combination reflects different research topics. The objective of this study is to automate this tedious procedure by recording those words/terms in a database and online sources, and use the information for an automated search and retrieval. The retrieved information will be available anytime and anywhere through a secure web server. RESULTS: We developed such a database that stored searching terms, journals and et al., and implement a piece of software for searching the medical subject heading-indexed sources such as the Medline and other online sources automatically. The returned information were stored locally, as is, on a server and visible through a Web-based interface. The search was performed daily or otherwise scheduled and the users logon to the website anytime without typing any words. The system has potentials to retrieve similarly from non-medical subject heading-indexed literature or a privileged information source such as a clinical information system. The issues such as security, presentation and visualization of the retrieved information were thus addressed. One of the presentation issues such as wireless access was also experimented. A user survey showed that the personalized online searches saved time and increased and relevancy. Handheld devices could also be used to access the stored information but less satisfactory. CONCLUSION: The Web-searching software or similar system has potential to be an efficient tool for both bench scientists and clinicians for their daily information needs
