A Project-Based Syllabus Design Innovative Pedagogy in Translation Studies

This thesis presents a project-based syllabus as an innovative approach to translator training in higher education. The learner-centred syllabus raises the awareness of translation skills and competences among trainee translators and can provide an enhanced all-round translator training in higher education, from an academic as well as a vocational perspective. The project-based syllabus was trialled in the module Translation and Technology of the Master’s degree in Translation Studies at Durham University (UK), which aims to familiarise students with internet-based and computer-aided translation tools. A three-year study conducted between 2009 and 2012 was an inquiry into the impact of the syllabus on students’ translation competences and skills. The quality and quantity of literature since the 1980s have shown that Translation Studies has become an independent discipline, partly thanks to scholars who have mapped the discipline, such as Holmes (1988) and Toury (1995, 2012), and others who have directed the spotlights on didactics, such as Kiraly (1995) and Pym (1993 - present) among others. The discussion of didactics and pedagogy, particularly in relation to translation technology, is to be found mainly in articles, chapters in collected volumes, or in conference papers. Against this background, the project-based syllabus is put forward as a suitable and complementary teaching method which helps students meet academic as well as professional requirements. In the thesis, I will place the project-based syllabus in context, describe its origin, discuss the rationale for its implementation, and the outcomes of the study

Translators and language service providers invariably offer their services while proclaiming superior quality. They are supported by professional translation and interpreting organisations which emphasise their dedication to practitioners as well as their aim to enhance language skills in the public interest by means of accredited qualifications. This article will not only review the concept of quality from the perspective of the different stakeholders in the translation process from providers to buyers, but also consider whether new models for standards and different levels of quality would not give more clarity in the translation industry. In order to improve the quality of translations there will need to be a greater emphasis on self-assessment and revision in translator training at root level. Meanwhile professional organisations should not only maintain and improve standards, but also promote more visibility of quality and standards to all stakeholders, from translator to clientПереводчики и поставщики лингвистических услуг неизменно предлагают свои услуги, провозглашая их превосходное качество.

In this thesis, the author investigates the Process Work contributions to men and power. The theories of men and power are researched and how Process Work and its applications, including the concept of rank, are useful adjuncts to the existing theories of power are demonstrated. The inquiry includes heuristic, qualitative and subjective methods. It is recognised that men are a diverse group, and the rank held is important if it is to be used well. Those who suffer from the poor use of rank can often provide valuable information about the effects of poor use of rank.Power by itself is limited. At moments such as when we are close to death power becomes less relevant. A deeper vision emerges related to the greater meaning of our lives and the legacy we have in our depths. It is a vision for all of us to use the rank we have to further the deepest values and aspirations of our lives, to the benefit of all living beings

Process-oriented dialogue : an inquiry into group work and conflict facilitation

    No full text
This is an exploration of process-oriented dialogue and how it is applied in group work and conflict facilitation. It encompasses a range of group-work applications, beginning with an investigation of useful approaches in bringing opposing parties together in dialogue situations. From there it unfolds the ways in which dialogue, in the midst of conflict, contributes to greater understanding of others' positions, and the creation of community spirit. A number of dynamics inherent in conflicting situations are explored, including the belief systems and dynamics present which deter parties from coming together to dialogue after conflict, whether interventions can help shift the attitudes of conflicting parties, whether discussion of the conflict can be useful, and the role of the facilitator. Models of conflict resolution, community building, and dialogue are introduced, and the Process Work model of group work is explored. Various case studies are described, along with surveys from two groups. The findings are analysed in the light of different paradigms and the application of process-oriented ideologies and methods and their effectiveness are critique
