    Chiral properties of SU(3) sextet fermions

    SU(3) gauge theory with overlap fermions in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) and fundamental representations is considered. A priori it is not known what the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking is in a higher dimensional representation although the general expectation is that if two representations are both complex, the breaking pattern will be the same. This expectation is verified for the sextet at N_f = 0 in several exact zero mode sectors. It is shown that if the volume is large enough the same random matrix ensemble describes both the sextet and fundamental Dirac eigenvalues. The number of zero modes for the sextet increases approximately 5-fold relative to the fundamental in accordance with the index theorem for small lattice spacing but zero modes which do not correspond to integer topological charge do exist at larger lattice spacings.     High throughput <i>in situ</i> EXAFS instrumentation for the automatic characterization of materials and catalysts

    An XAS data acquisition and control system for the in situ analysis of dynamic materials libraries under control of temperature and gaseous environment has been developed. It was integrated at the SRS in Daresbury, UK, beamline 9.3, using a Si (220) monochromator and a 13 element solid state Ge fluorescence detector. The core of the system is an intelligent X, Y, Z, θ positioning system coupled to multi-stream quadrupole mass spectrometry analysis (QMS). The system is modular and can be adapted to other synchrotron radiation beamlines. The entire software control was implemented using Labview and allows the scan of a variety of library sizes, in several positions, angles, gas compositions and temperatures with minimal operator intervention. The system was used for the automated characterization of a library of 91 catalyst precursors containing ternary combinations of Cu, Pt, and Au on γ-Al2O3, and for the evaluation and structural characterization of eight Au catalysts supported on A12O3 and TiO2. Mass spectrometer traces reveal conversion rate oscillations in 6wt % Au/γAl2O3 catalysts. The use of HT experimentation for in situ EXAFS studies demonstrates the feasibility and potential of HT in situ XAFS for synchrotron radiation studies

    Atomic Model of Susy Hubbard Operators

    We apply the recently proposed susy Hubbard operators to an atomic model. In the limiting case of free spins, we derive exact results for the entropy which are compared with a mean field + gaussian corrections description. We show how these results can be extended to the case of charge fluctuations and calculate exact results for the partition function, free energy and heat capacity of an atomic model for some simple examples. Wavefunctions of possible states are listed. We compare the accuracy of large N expansions of the susy spin operators with those obtained using `Schwinger bosons' and `Abrikosov pseudo-fermions'. For the atomic model, we compare results of slave boson, slave fermion, and susy Hubbard operator approximations in the physically interesting but uncontrolled limiting case of N->2. For a mixed representation of spins we estimate the accuracy of large N expansions of the atomic model. In the single box limit, we find that the lowest energy saddle-point solution reduces to simply either slave bosons or slave fermions, while for higher boxes this is not the case. The highest energy saddle-point solution has the interesting feature that it admits a small region of a mixed representation, which bears a superficial resemblance to that seen experimentally close to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point.Comment: 17 pages + 7 pages Appendices, 14 figures.     Precision of maxillo-mandibular registration with intraoral scanners in vitro

    Purpose: To compare the precision of maxillo-mandibular registration and resulting full arch occlusion produced by three intraoral scanners in vitro. Methods: Six dental models (groups A–F) were scanned five times with intraoral scanners (CEREC, TRIOS, PLANMECA), producing both full arch and two buccal maxillo-mandibular scans. Total surface area of contact points (defined as regions within 0.1 mm and all mesh penetrations) was measured, and the distances between four pairs of key points were compared, each two in the posterior and anterior. Results: Total surface area of contact points varied significantly among scanners across all groups. CEREC produced the smallest contact surface areas (5.7–25.3 mm2), while PLANMECA tended to produce the largest areas in each group (22.2–60.2 mm2). Precision of scanners, as measured by the 95% CI range, varied from 0.1–0.9 mm for posterior key points. For anterior key points the 95% CI range was smaller, particularly when multiple posterior teeth were still present (0.04–0.42 mm). With progressive loss of posterior units (groups D–F), differences in the anterior occlusion among scanners became significant in five out of six groups (D–F left canines and D, F right canines, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Maxillo-mandibular registrations from three intraoral scanners created significantly different surface areas of occlusal contact. Posterior occlusions revealed lower precision for all scanners than anterior. CEREC tended towards incorrect posterior open bites, whilst TRIOS was most consistent in reproducing occluding units

    SU(3) gauge theory in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) and fundamental representations is considered in symmetric and periodic boxes. Using the overlap formulation in the quenched approximation it is shown that the topological charge obtained from the sextet index theorem always leads to an integer value and agrees with the charge obtained from the fundamental index theorem in the continuum. At larger lattice spacing configurations exist with fractional topological charge if the sextet index is used but these are lattice artifacts and the probability of finding such a configuration rapidly approaches zero. By considering the decomposition of the sextet representation with respect to an SU(2) subgroup it is shown that the SU(2) adjoint index theorem leads to integer charge as well. We conclude that the non-zero value of the bilinear gaugino condensate in N=1 super-Yang-Mills theory cannot be attributed to configurations with fractional topological charge once periodic boundary conditions are imposed.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures; discussion and references adde

    A broad excited state was observed in 6He with energy Ex=5+-1 MeV and width Gamma=3+-1 MeV, following the reaction 7Li(&#947;,p)6He. The state is consistent with a number of broad resonances predicted by recent cluster model calculations. The well-established reaction mechanism, combined with a simple and transparent analysis procedure confers considerable validity to this observation

    Green Alternatives to Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphates: Vanadium Oxide-Based Additives

    A functionalized vanadyl(IV) acetylacetonate (acac) complex has been found to be a superior and highly effective antiwear agent, affording remarkable wear protection, compared to the current industry standard, zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs). Analysis of vanadium speciation and the depth profile of the active tribofilms by a combination of X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analyses indicated a mixed-valence oxide composite, comprising V(III), V(IV), and V(V) species. A marked difference in composition between the bulk and the surfaces of the tribofilms was found. The vanadyl(VI) acac precursor has the potential to reduce or even replace ZDDP, which would represent a paradigm shift in the antiwear agent design. A major benefit relative to ZDDPs is the absence of S and P moieties, eliminating the potential for forming noxious and environmentally harmful byproducts of these elements
