Effect of residual stress on high temperature deformation in a weld stainless steel
This paper considers the measurement of residual stresses induced by mechanical loading in a weld Type 347 stainless steel. The work is based in part on an ongoing Round Robin collaborative effort by the Versailles Agreement on Materials and Standards, Technical Working Area 31, VAMAS TWA 31 working on Crack Growth of Components Containing Residual Stresses . The specific objective of the work at Imperial College London and HMI, Berlin is to examine how residual stresses and prior straining and subsequent relaxation at high temperature contribute to creep crack initiation and growth for steels relevant to power plant applications. Tensile residual stresses have been introduced in the weld by pre compression and neutron diffraction measurements have been carried out before and after stress relaxation at 650 oC. Significant relaxation of the residual stresses has been observed, in agreement with earlier work on a stainless steel. Preliminary results suggest that the strains local to the crack drop by over 60 after 1000 h relaxation at 650 oC for the weld steel. The results have been compared with finite element studies of elastic plastic pre compression and stress relaxation due to cree
Atomic Layer Deposition of Ternary Indium/Tin/Aluminum Oxide Thin Films, their characterization and Transistor Performance under Illumination.
Multilayered heterostructures comprising of In 2 O 3, SnO 2, and Al 2 O 3 were studied for their application in thin-film transistors (TFT). The compositional influence of tin oxide on the properties of the thin-film, as well as on the TFT characteristics is investigated. The heterostructures are fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at 200°C, employing trimethylindium (TMI), tetrakis(dimethylamino)tin (TDMASn), trimethylaluminum (TMA), and water as precursors. After post-deposition annealing at 400°C the thin-films are found to be amorphous, however, they show a discrete layer structure of the individual oxides of uniform film thickness and high optical transparency in the visible region. Incorporation of only two monolayers of Al 2 O 3 in the active semiconducting layer the formation of oxygen vacancies can be effectively suppressed, resulting in an improved semiconducting and switching behavior. The heterostacks comprising of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /Al 2 O 3 are incorporated into TFT devices, exhibiting a saturation field-effect mobility (” sat ) of 2.0 cm 2 ·V -1 s -1, a threshold-voltage (V th ) of 8.6 V, a high current on/off ratio (I On /I Off ) of 1.0·10 7, and a subthreshold swing (SS) of 485 mV·dec -1. The stability of the TFT under illumination is also altered to a significant extent. A change in the transfer characteristic towards conductive behavior is evident when illuminated with light of an energy of 3.1 eV (400 nm)
STD care in the South African private health sector
Objectives. To establish the accessibility and quality of sexually transmitted disease (SID) care provided by private general practitioners (GPs) and workplace health services in South Africa.Design. Structured telephone interviews were conducted with a random national sample of 120 GPs and 244 occupational health nurses (OHNs) between May and July 1997. The interview schedules covered indicators of access (including utilisation) and processes (drug treatment, partner management, counselling and condom promotion) of STD care.Results. An estimated 5 million STD-related visits were made to private general practices in 1997. Reported treatment of STDs was assessed for effectiveness using well established syndromic case management guidelines. Only 28% of GPs reported effective treatment for urethral discharge. This dropped to 14% for genital ulcer and 4% for pelvic inflammatory disease. Fifty-five per cent of the OHNs interviewed indicated that their workplace clinics provided STD care. Nurses provided this care, with or without the support of doctors, in 87% of clinics. Reported urethral discharge and genital ulcer treatment regimens were assessed as effective in 34% and 14% of responses, respectively.Conclusions. The private sector is a major provider of STD care and is key to national efforts to achieve better STD control, thereby preventing the spread of HIV. However, the results of the research suggest that the poor quality of STD care may be underminlng attempts to control these epidemics in our society. Although a complex task, strategies need to be found to improve the quality of care provided within the private sector

SDSS-II SUPERNOVA SURVEY: AN ANALYSIS of the LARGEST SAMPLE of TYPE IA SUPERNOVAE and CORRELATIONS with HOST-GALAXY SPECTRAL PROPERTIES
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the Institute of Physics via http://dx.doi.org/10.3847/0004-637X/821/2/115Using the largest single-survey sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) to date, we study the relationship between properties of SNe Ia and those of their host galaxies, focusing primarily on correlations with Hubble residuals (HRs). Our sample consists of 345 photometrically classified or spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia discovered as part of the SDSS-II Supernova Survey (SDSS-SNS). This analysis utilizes host-galaxy spectroscopy obtained during the SDSS-I/II spectroscopic survey and from an ancillary program on the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey that obtained spectra for nearly all host galaxies of SDSS-II SN candidates. In addition, we use photometric host-galaxy properties from the SDSS-SNS data release such as host stellar mass and star formation rate. We confirm the well-known relation between HR and host-galaxy mass and find a 3.6Ï significance of a nonzero linear slope. We also recover correlations between HR and host-galaxy gas-phase metallicity and specific star formation rate as they are reported in the literature. With our large data set, we examine correlations between HR and multiple host-galaxy properties simultaneously and find no evidence of a significant correlation. We also independently analyze our spectroscopically confirmed and photometrically classified SNe Ia and comment on the significance of similar combined data sets for future surveys. This material is based on work supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship under Grant No. DGE-1321851. 2015 Update on Acute Adverse Reactions to Gadolinium based Contrast Agents in Cardiovascular MR. Large Multi-National and Multi-Ethnical Population Experience With 37788 Patients From the EuroCMR Registry
Objectives: Specifically we aim to demonstrate that the results of our earlier safety data hold true in this much larger multi-national and multi-ethnical population. Background: We sought to re-evaluate the frequency, manifestations, and severity of acute adverse reactions associated with administration of several gadolinium- based contrast agents during routine CMR on a European level. Methods: Multi-centre, multi-national, and multi-ethnical registry with consecutive enrolment of patients in 57 European centres. Results: During the current observation 37788 doses of Gadolinium based contrast agent were administered to 37788 patients. The mean dose was 24.7Â ml (range 5â80Â ml), which is equivalent to 0.123Â mmol/kg (range 0.01 - 0.3Â mmol/kg). Forty-five acute adverse reactions due to contrast administration occurred (0.12Â %). Most reactions were classified as mild (43 of 45) according to the American College of Radiology definition. The most frequent complaints following contrast administration were rashes and hives (15 of 45), followed by nausea (10 of 45) and flushes (10 of 45). The event rate ranged from 0.05Â % (linear non-ionic agent gadodiamide) to 0.42Â % (linear ionic agent gadobenate dimeglumine). Interestingly, we also found different event rates between the three main indications for CMR ranging from 0.05Â % (risk stratification in suspected CAD) to 0.22Â % (viability in known CAD). Conclusions: The current data indicate that the results of the earlier safety data hold true in this much larger multi-national and multi-ethnical population. Thus, the âoff-labelâ use of Gadolinium based contrast in cardiovascular MR should be regarded as safe concerning the frequency, manifestation and severity of acute events

Methane storms as a driver of Titan's dune orientation
Titan's equatorial regions are covered by eastward propagating linear dunes.
This direction is opposite to mean surface winds simulated by Global Climate
Models (GCMs), which are oriented westward at these latitudes, similar to trade
winds on Earth. Different hypotheses have been proposed to address this
apparent contradiction, involving Saturn's gravitational tides, large scale
topography or wind statistics, but none of them can explain a global eastward
dune propagation in the equatorial band. Here we analyse the impact of
equinoctial tropical methane storms developing in the superrotating atmosphere
(i.e. the eastward winds at high altitude) on Titan's dune orientation. Using
mesoscale simulations of convective methane clouds with a GCM wind profile
featuring superrotation, we show that Titan's storms should produce fast
eastward gust fronts above the surface. Such gusts dominate the aeolian
transport, allowing dunes to extend eastward. This analysis therefore suggests
a coupling between superrotation, tropical methane storms and dune formation on
Titan. Furthermore, together with GCM predictions and analogies to some
terrestrial dune fields, this work provides a general framework explaining
several major features of Titan's dunes: linear shape, eastward propagation and
poleward divergence, and implies an equatorial origin of Titan's dune sand.Comment: Published online on Nature Geoscience on 13 April 201
Suv4-20h Histone Methyltransferases Promote Neuroectodermal Differentiation by Silencing the Pluripotency-Associated Oct-25 Gene
Post-translational modifications (PTMs) of histones exert fundamental roles in regulating gene expression. During development, groups of PTMs are constrained by unknown mechanisms into combinatorial patterns, which facilitate transitions from uncommitted embryonic cells into differentiated somatic cell lineages. Repressive histone modifications such as H3K9me3 or H3K27me3 have been investigated in detail, but the role of H4K20me3 in development is currently unknown. Here we show that Xenopus laevis Suv4-20h1 and h2 histone methyltransferases (HMTases) are essential for induction and differentiation of the neuroectoderm. Morpholino-mediated knockdown of the two HMTases leads to a selective and specific downregulation of genes controlling neural induction, thereby effectively blocking differentiation of the neuroectoderm. Global transcriptome analysis supports the notion that these effects arise from the transcriptional deregulation of specific genes rather than widespread, pleiotropic effects. Interestingly, morphant embryos fail to repress the Oct4-related Xenopus gene Oct-25. We validate Oct-25 as a direct target of xSu4-20h enzyme mediated gene repression, showing by chromatin immunoprecipitaton that it is decorated with the H4K20me3 mark downstream of the promoter in normal, but not in double-morphant, embryos. Since knockdown of Oct-25 protein significantly rescues the neural differentiation defect in xSuv4-20h double-morphant embryos, we conclude that the epistatic relationship between Suv4-20h enzymes and Oct-25 controls the transit from pluripotent to differentiation-competent neural cells. Consistent with these results in Xenopus, murine Suv4-20h1/h2 double-knockout embryonic stem (DKO ES) cells exhibit increased Oct4 protein levels before and during EB formation, and reveal a compromised and biased capacity for in vitro differentiation, when compared to normal ES cells. Together, these results suggest a regulatory mechanism, conserved between amphibians and mammals, in which H4K20me3-dependent restriction of specific POU-V genes directs cell fate decisions, when embryonic cells exit the pluripotent state
Enhanced cosmic-ray flux toward zeta Persei inferred from laboratory study of H3+ - e- recombination rate
The H3+ molecular ion plays a fundamental role in interstellar chemistry, as
it initiates a network of chemical reactions that produce many interstellar
molecules. In dense clouds, the H3+ abundance is understood using a simple
chemical model, from which observations of H3+ yield valuable estimates of
cloud path length, density, and temperature. On the other hand, observations of
diffuse clouds have suggested that H3+ is considerably more abundant than
expected from the chemical models. However, diffuse cloud models have been
hampered by the uncertain values of three key parameters: the rate of H3+
destruction by electrons, the electron fraction, and the cosmic-ray ionisation
rate. Here we report a direct experimental measurement of the H3+ destruction
rate under nearly interstellar conditions. We also report the observation of
H3+ in a diffuse cloud (towards zeta Persei) where the electron fraction is
already known. Taken together, these results allow us to derive the value of
the third uncertain model parameter: we find that the cosmic-ray ionisation
rate in this sightline is forty times faster than previously assumed. If such a
high cosmic-ray flux is indeed ubiquitous in diffuse clouds, the discrepancy
between chemical models and the previous observations of H3+ can be resolved.Comment: 6 pages, Nature, in pres
