Hypergeometric Series and Harmonic Number Identities
The classical hypergeometric summation theorems are exploited to derive
several striking identities on harmonic numbers including those discovered
recently by Paule and Schneider (2003).Comment: 10 page

Spectral analysis of the sdO K 648, the exciting star of the planetary nebula Ps 1 in the globular cluster M 15 (NGC 7078)
We present a spectral analysis of the sdO central star K 648 based on
medium-resolution optical and high-resolution UV spectra. The photospheric
parameters are determined by means of state-of-the-art NLTE model atmosphere
techniques.
We found Teff = 39 +/- 2 kK and log g = 3.9 +/- 0.2. The helium (He/H=0.08)
and oxygen (O/H=0.001) abundances are about solar while carbon is enriched by a
factor of 2.5 (C/H=0.001). Nitrogen (N/H = 10**(-6), [N/H] = -2.0) appears at a
sub-solar value. However, these metal abundances are much higher than the
cluster's metallicity M 15: [Fe/H] = -2.25).
The surface composition appears to be a mixture of the original hydrogen-rich
material and products of helium burning (3 alpha process) which have been mixed
up to the surface. The abundances of He, C, and N are consistent with the
nebular abundance, while O is considerably more abundant in the photosphere
than in the nebula.
From a comparison of its position in the log Teff - log g plane with
evolutionary calculations a mass of 0.57 (+0.02, -0.01) Msun and a luminosity
of 3810 +/- 1200 Lsun are deduced.
Our spectroscopic distance d = 11.1 (+2.4, -2.9) kpc is in agreement with the
distance of M 15 as determined by Alves et al. (2000).
From the GHRS spectra we measure a radial velocity of vrad = -130 km/sec.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure

John W. Barriger III: Railroad Legend
Review of: John W. Barriger III: Railroad Legend, by H. Roger Grant
Monsters and men : the life and works of Sascha Schneider
Sascha Schneider was an artist that was incredibly popular, but only for a short time during his life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth- century. This thesis will discuss the life and work of Schneider, with special attention on the significance of the interpersonal relationships he developed, and the importance of these relationships to his artistic career. By tracing his early life in St. Petersburg, Russia and his transition to an established life in Dresden, Germany, one can obtain a sense of his early influences. In Dresden he received an Education from the Dresden Art Academy, and it was there that he made on of his most important friendships with artist Max Klinger. Klinger helped Schneider establish himself as a Symbolist painter, and introduced him to other artists who proved to be paramount to his success later in life. Schneider eventually teamed up with novelist Karl May, and was commissioned to created the covers for over twenty-five of May’s adventure stories. Through his work is May, Schneider’s art was placed in the hands of many young Germans. Later in life, Schneider created a school for boys, Kraft-Kunst, with friends Richard Müller and Hans Unger. This school focused on physical fitness and the creation of the perfect male form, while fostering the artistic talents of the young students
The Galaxy Proximity Effect in the Lyman-alpha Forest
Hydrodynamic cosmological simulations predict that the average opacity of the
Ly-alpha forest should increase in the neighborhood of galaxies because
galaxies form in dense environments. Recent observations (Adelberger et al.
2002) confirm this expectation at large scales, but they show a decrease of
absorption at comoving separations Delta_r <~ 1 Mpc/h. We show that this
discrepancy is statistically significant, especially for the innermost data
point at Delta_r <= 0.5 Mpc/h, even though this data point rests on three
galaxy-quasar pairs. Galaxy redshift errors of the expected magnitude are
insufficient to resolve the conflict. Peculiar velocities allow gas at comoving
distances >~ 1 Mpc/h to produce saturated absorption at the galaxy redshift,
putting stringent requirements on any ``feedback'' solution. Local
photoionization is insufficient, even if we allow for recurrent AGN activity
that keeps the neutral hydrogen fraction below its equilibrium value. A simple
``wind'' model that eliminates all neutral hydrogen in spheres around the
observed galaxies can marginally explain the data, but only if the winds extend
to comoving radii ~1.5 Mpc/h.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; To appear in proceedings of the 13th Annual
