Albumin concentrations are primarily determined by the body cell mass and the systemic inflammatory response in cancer patients with weight loss
The association between hypoalbuminemia and poor prognosis in patients with cancer is well recognized. However, the factors that contribute to the fall in albumin concentrations are not well understood. In the present study, we examined the relationship between circulating albumin concentrations, weight loss, the body cell mass (measured using total body potassium), and the presence of an inflammatory response (measured using C- reactive protein) in male patients (n=40) with advanced lung or gastrointestinal cancer. Albumin concentrations were significantly correlated with the percent ideal body weight (r=0.390, p lt 0.05), extent of reported weight loss (r=-0.492, p lt 0.01), percent predicted total body potassium (adjusted for age, height, and weight, r=0.686, p lt 0.001), and logo C-reactive protein concentrations (r=-0.545, p lt 0.001). On multiple regression analysis, the percent predicted total body potassium and log(10) C-reactive protein concentrations accounted for 63% of the variation in albumin concentrations (r(2) = 0.626, p lt 0.001). The interrelationship between albumin, body cell mass, and the inflammatory response is consistent with the concept that the presence of an ongoing inflammatory response contributes to the progressive loss of these vital protein components of the body and the subsequent death of patients with advanced cancer
A Candidate Sub-Parsec Supermassive Binary Black Hole System
We identify SDSS J153636.22+044127.0, a QSO discovered in the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey, as a promising candidate for a binary black hole system. This QSO
has two broad-line emission systems separated by 3500 km/sec. The redder system
at z=0.3889 also has a typical set of narrow forbidden lines. The bluer system
(z=0.3727) shows only broad Balmer lines and UV Fe II emission, making it
highly unusual in its lack of narrow lines. A third system, which includes only
unresolved absorption lines, is seen at a redshift, z=0.3878, intermediate
between the two emission-line systems. While the observational signatures of
binary nuclear black holes remain unclear, J1536+0441 is unique among all QSOs
known in having two broad-line regions, indicative of two separate black holes
presently accreting gas. The interpretation of this as a bound binary system of
two black holes having masses of 10^8.9 and 10^7.3 solar masses, yields a
separation of ~ 0.1 parsec and an orbital period of ~100 years. The separation
implies that the two black holes are orbiting within a single narrow-line
region, consistent with the characteristics of the spectrum. This object was
identified as an extreme outlier of a Karhunen-Loeve Transform of 17,500 z <
0.7 QSO spectra from the SDSS. The probability of the spectrum resulting from a
chance superposition of two QSOs with similar redshifts is estimated at
2X10^-7, leading to the expectation of 0.003 such objects in the sample
studied; however, even in this case, the spectrum of the lower redshift QSO
remains highly unusual.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Nature in pres
The central structure of Broad Absorption Line QSOs: observational characteristics in the cm-mm wavelength domain
Accounting for ~20% of the total QSO population, Broad Absorption Line QSOs
are still an unsolved problem in the AGN context. They present wide troughs in
the UV spectrum, due to material with velocities up to 0.2 c toward the
observer. The two models proposed in literature try to explain them as a
particular phase of the evolution of QSOs or as normal QSOs, but seen from a
particular line of sight.
We built a statistically complete sample of Radio-Loud BAL QSOs, and carried
out an observing campaign to piece together the whole spectrum in the cm
wavelength domain, and highlight all the possible differences with respect to a
comparison sample of Radio-Loud non-BAL QSOs. VLBI observations at high angular
resolution have been performed, to study the pc-scale morphology of these
objects. Finally, we tried to detect a possible dust component with
observations at mm-wavelengths.
Results do not seem to indicate a young age for all BAL QSOs. Instead a
variety of orientations and morphologies have been found, constraining the
outflows foreseen by the orientation model to have different possible angles
with respect to the jet axis
Exploring Relations Between BCG and Cluster Properties in the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources Survey from
We present a sample of 329 low to intermediate redshift () brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in X-ray selected clusters from the SPectroscopic IDentification of eRosita Sources (SPIDERS) survey, a spectroscopic survey within Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV (SDSS-IV). We define our BCGs by simultaneous consideration of legacy X-ray data from ROSAT, maximum likelihood outputs from an optical cluster-finder algorithm and visual inspection. Using SDSS imaging data, we fit S\'ersic profiles to our BCGs in three bands (\textit{g}, \textit{r}, \textit{i}) with \textsc{SIGMA}, a \textsc{GALFIT}-based software wrapper. We examine the reliability of our fits by running our pipeline on psf-convolved model profiles injected into 8 random cluster fields, we then use the results of this analysis to create a robust subsample of 198 BCGs. We outline three cluster properties of interest: overall cluster X-ray luminosity (), cluster richness as estimated by \textsc{redMaPPer} () and cluster halo mass (), which is estimated via velocity dispersion. In general, there are significant correlations with BCG stellar mass between all three environmental properties, but no significant trends arise with either S\'ersic index or effective radius. There is no major environmental dependence on the strength of the relation between effective radius and BCG stellar mass. Stellar mass therefore arises as the most important factor governing BCG morphology. Our results indicate that our sample consists of a large number of relaxed, mature clusters containing broadly homogeneous BCGs up to , suggesting that there is little evidence for much ongoing structural evolution for BCGs in these systems
The spectral variability of FSRQs
The optical variability of 29 flat spectrum radio quasars in SDSS Stripe 82
region are investigated by using DR7 released multi-epoch data. All FSRQs show
variations with overall amplitude ranging from 0.24 mag to 3.46 mag in
different sources. About half of FSRQs show a bluer-when-brighter trend, which
is commonly observed for blazars. However, only one source shows a
redder-when-brighter trend, which implies it is rare in FSRQs. In this source,
the thermal emission may likely be responsible for the spectral behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Journal of Astrophysics and

Validity and reliability of Resource Utilization Groups (RUG-III) in Finnish long-term care facilities
Resource Utilization Groups, Version III (RUG-III) is a case-mix system developed in the USA for classification of long-term care residents. This paper examines the validity and reliability of an adapted 22-group version of RUG-III (RUG-III/22) for use in long-term care facilities in Finland. Finnish cost weights for RUG-III/22 groups are calculated and different methods for their computation are evaluated. The study sample (1,964 residents) was collected in 1995 - 96 from ten long-term care facilities in Finland. RUG-III/22 alone explained 38.2% of the variance of total patient-specific (nursing + auxiliary staff) per diem cost. Resource use within RUG groups was relatively homogeneous. Other predictors of resource use included age, gender and length of stay. RUG-III/22 also met the standard for good reliability (i.e. a kappa value of 0.6 or higher) for crucial classification items, such as activities of daily living and high correlation between assessments based on relative cost.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68924/2/10.1177_14034948990270030201.pd
West Antarctic ice loss influenced by internal climate variability and anthropogenic forcing
Recent ice loss from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet has been caused by ocean melting of ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea.
Eastward wind anomalies at the shelf break enhance the import of warm Circumpolar Deep Water onto the Amundsen Sea
continental shelf, which creates transient melting anomalies with an approximately decadal period. No anthropogenic influence on this process has been established. Here, we combine observations and climate model simulations to suggest that increased greenhouse gas forcing caused shelf-break winds to transition from mean easterlies in the 1920s to the near-zero mean zonal winds of the present day. Strong internal climate variability, primarily linked to the tropical Pacific, is superimposed on this forced trend. We infer that the Amundsen Sea experienced decadal ocean ariability throughout the twentieth century, with warm anomalies gradually becoming more prevalent, offering a credible explanation for the ongoing ice loss. Existing climate model projections show that strong future greenhouse gas forcing creates persistent mean westerly shelf-break winds by 2100, suggesting a further enhancement of warm ocean anomalies. These wind changes are weaker under a scenario in which greenhouse gas concentrations are stabilized
On the Thermal Activation of Turin Metro Line 2 Tunnels
The Turin metro Line 2 will extend for nearly 28 km and include 26 stations. It will connect the SW suburbs of the city to the NE ones. The excavation will be performed by means of TBM and Cut & Cover techniques and, once concluded, will host a fully automated driverless light metro. This paper will describe the feasibility study carried out to assess the energy potential of the thermal activation of the line by using an innovative tunnel lining segment (ENERTUN) recently patented and tested in real operating conditions. A novel methodology was adopted, involving thermo-hydraulic 3D FE numerical anal- yses to identify the geothermal potential for the different sections of the line. A study of the possible collectors for the thermal energy produced was also performed considering the planned stations, the existing buildings and the future urban developments
The completed SDSS-IV extended baryon oscillation spectroscopic survey: Geometry and growth from the anisotropic void-galaxy correlation function in the luminous red galaxy sample
We present an analysis of the anisotropic redshift-space void-galaxy correlation in configuration space using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 16 luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample. This sample consists of LRGs between redshifts 0.6 and 1.0, combined with the high redshift z > 0.6 tail of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 CMASS sample. We use a reconstruction method to undo redshift-space distortion (RSD) effects from the galaxy field before applying a watershed void-finding algorithm to remove bias from the void selection. We then perform a joint fit to the multipole moments of the correlation function for the growth rate fσ 8 and the geometrical distance ratio DM/DH, finding f σ8 (zeff ) = 0.356 ± 0.079 and DM /DH (zeff ) = 0.868 ± 0.017 at the effective redshift zeff = 0.69 of the sample. The posterior parameter degeneracies are orthogonal to those from galaxy clustering analyses applied to the same data, and the constraint achieved on DM/DH is significantly tighter. In combination with the consensus galaxy BAO and full-shape analyses of the same sample, we obtain fσ 8 = 0.447 ± 0.039, DM/rd = 17.48 ± 0.23, and DH/rd = 20.10 ± 0.34. These values are in good agreement with the ΛCDM model predictions and represent reductions in the uncertainties of 13 per cent, 23 per cent, and 28 per cent, respectively, compared to the combined results from galaxy clustering, or an overall reduction of 55 per cent in the allowed volume of parameter space
