The Souls of China: The Return of Religion after Mao

    Get PDF
Ever since Europe’s Age of Enlightenment many regard a society without religion as the better, more peaceful one. However, a glance at Chinese history shows that this did not always prove true. The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was without doubt one of the most radical and brutal fights against all religious beliefs and practices. Countless temples, mosques and churches were destroyed and countless people arrested for their spiritual beliefs. Countless were also the immaterial losses, nobody knows exactly how much of the spiritual and religious knowledge was lost forever, when pictures and scriptures were burned and chains of oral tradition were broken. Mao Zedong died in September 1976. His wife Jiang Qing and the other members of “Gang of Four” were arrested in October of the same year. But it took until 1982 for the Communist Party to publish “document 19” - an official directive on religions and how to deal with them. Only then were many religious experts released from prison or labor camps, and a renaissance of religious traditions could begin

    Get PDF
(Herausgeber)How can multiprofessional teaching and learning be normalized at universities? This question was investigated in the research project NorMultität. The normalization process theory was taken as a starting point for the design of teaching. The theory describes four stages that must be passed through in order to integrate a new practice into everyday work. Coherence, cognitive participation, collective action, and reflexive monitoring are key concepts in the theory. The results of the project show that multiprofessional teaching and learning requires a common knowledge base, which can be established by changing and aligning perspectives. The action strategies of teachers and learners should aim at creating a common understanding and initiating exchange. Reflective monitoring is necessary to assess the consequences of multiprofessional teaching and learning. (Editor

Investigation of hippocampal synaptic transmission and plasticity in mice deficient in the actin-binding protein Drebrin

The dynamic regulation of the actin cytoskeleton plays a key role in controlling the structure and function of synapses. It is vital for activity-dependent modulation of synaptic transmission and long-term changes in synaptic morphology associated with memory consolidation. Several regulators of actin dynamics at the synapse have been identified, of which a salient one is the postsynaptic actin stabilising protein Drebrin (DBN). It has been suggested that DBN modulates neurotransmission and changes in dendritic spine morphology associated with synaptic plasticity. Given that a decrease in DBN levels is correlated with cognitive deficits associated with ageing and dementia, it was hypothesised that DBN protein abundance instructs the integrity and function of synapses. We created a novel DBN deficient mouse line. Analysis of gross brain and neuronal morphology revealed no phenotype in the absence of DBN. Electrophysiological recordings in acute hippocampal slices and primary hippocampal neuronal cultures showed that basal synaptic transmission, and both long-term and homeostatic synaptic plasticity were unchanged, suggesting that loss of DBN is not sufficient in inducing synapse dysfunction. We propose that the overall lack of changes in synaptic function and plasticity in DBN deficient mice may indicate robust compensatory mechanisms that safeguard cytoskeleton dynamics at the synapse

Task-dependent posterior cingulate activation in mild cognitive impairment

Neuroimaging research has demonstrated that the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is functionally compromised in individuals diagnosed with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a major risk factor for the development of Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD). In functional MRI studies with healthy participants, this same region is active during self-appraisal (requiring retrieval of semantic knowledge about the self) as well as episodic recognition of previously learned information. Administering both types of tasks to people with MCI may reveal important information on the role of the PCC in recollection. This study investigated fMRI activation in the PCC in individuals with MCI and matched controls across two tasks. The first task was a visual episodic recognition task. The second task was an autobiographical self-appraisal task in which subjects rated themselves on a set of trait adjectives. Results of a conjunction analysis revealed the PCC as the sole region commonly active during both tasks in the healthy older adults. Furthermore, additional analysis revealed an interaction in the PCC, indicating a task-dependent response in the MCI group. MCI participants showed PCC activation during self-appraisal, but not episodic retrieval. This result suggests in MCI that the PCC shows functional degradation during episodic retrieval; however, the PCC\u27s role in retrieval and evaluation of highly elaborated information regarding the self is more well-preserved. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. Anosognosia in mild cognitive impairment: Relationship to activation of cortical midline structures involved in self-appraisal

Awareness of cognitive dysfunction shown by individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a condition conferring risk for Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD), is variable. Anosognosia, or unawareness of loss of function, is beginning to be recognized as an important clinical symptom of MCI. However, little is known about the brain substrates underlying this symptom. We hypothesized that MCI participants\u27 activation of cortical midline structures (CMS) during self-appraisal would covary with level of insight into cognitive difficulties (indexed by a discrepancy score between patient and informant ratings of cognitive decline in each MCI participant). To address this hypothesis, we first compared 16 MCI participants and 16 age-matched controls, examining brain regions showing conjoint or differential BOLD response during self-appraisal. Second, we used regression to investigate the relationship between awareness of deficit in MCI and BOLD activity during self-appraisal, controlling for extent of memory impairment. Between-group comparisons indicated that MCI participants show subtly attenuated CMS activity during self-appraisal. Regression analysis revealed a highly significant relationship between BOLD response during self-appraisal and self-awareness of deficit in MCI. This finding highlights the level of anosognosia in MCI as an important predictor of response to self-appraisal in cortical midline structures, brain regions vulnerable to changes in early AD. © 2007 The International Neuropsychological Society
