Comparative growth and static allometry in the genus Chlorocebus
Characterizing variation in growth across populations is critical to understanding multiple aspects of development in primates, including within-taxon developmental plasticity and the evolution of life history patterns. Growth in wild primates has often been reported and directly compared across larger taxonomic groups and within social groups, but comparisons are rarely investigated across widely dispersed populations of a single taxon. With the Vervet Phenome-Genome Project and the International Vervet Research Consortium, we trapped 936 vervet monkeys of all ages representing three populations (Kenyan pygerythrus, South African pygerythrus, and sabaeus from St. Kitts & Nevis). We gathered 10 different body measurements from each including mass, body breadth and length, segmental limb lengths, and chest circumference. To gain a better understanding of how ontogenetic patterns vary in these populations, we calculated bivariate allometry coefficients, derived using PCA on log-transformed and z-standardized trait values, and compared them to isometric vector coefficients. Within all population samples, around weaning age most traits showed a negative allometric relationship to body length. As each population ages, however, distinct patterns emerge, showing population differences in onset and intensity of growth among traits. In concordance with other analyses on growth in these populations, our results suggest that there exist relative differences in patterns of growth between Chlorocebus populations, further suggesting selection for unique developmental pathways in each

The apparel industry has a tremendous impact on water, yet unlike food systems, where consumer interest in sustainability is growing, it is difficult for the everyday consumer to understand the nuances of sustainable clothing and there has been little growth in sustainability labels and claims. Water use and pollution needs to be evaluated throughout the clothing supply chain to identify leverage points to reduce water impacts and design new processes to integrate water sustainability into production industry-wide
The static allometry of sexual and non-sexual traits in vervet monkeys
Sexual traits vary tremendously in static allometry. This variation may be explained in part by body size-related differences in the strength of selection. We tested this hypothesis in two populations of vervet monkeys, using estimates of the level of condition dependence for different morphological traits as a proxy for body size-related variation in the strength of selection. In support of the hypothesis, we found that the steepness of allometric slopes increased with the level of condition dependence. One trait of particular interest, the penis, had shallow allometric slopes and low levels of condition dependence, in agreement with one of the most consistent patterns yet detected in the study of allometry, namely that of genitalia exhibiting shallow allometries.This research was supported by NIH grant R01RR0163009
Resolving the true band gap of ZrNiSn half-Heusler thermoelectric materials
N-type XNiSn (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) half-Heusler (HH) compounds possess excellent thermoelectric properties, which are believed to be attributed to their relatively high mobility. However, p-type XNiSn HH compounds have poor figures of merit, zT, compared to XCoSb compounds. This can be traced to the suppression of the magnitude of the thermopower at high temperatures. E_g = 2eS_(max)T_(max) relates the band gap to the thermopower peak. However, from this formula, one would conclude that the band gap of p-type XNiSn solid solutions is only one-third that of n-type XNiSn, which effectively prevents p-type XNiSn HHs from being useful thermoelectric materials. The study of p-type HH Zr_(1âx)Sc_xNiSn solid solutions show that the large mobility difference between electrons and holes in XNiSn results in a significant correction to the GoldsmidâSharp formula. This finding explains the difference in the thermopower band gap between n-type and p-type HH. The high electron-to-hole weighted mobility ratio leads to an effective suppression of the bipolar effect in the thermoelectric transport properties which is essential for high zT values in n-type XNiSn (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) HH compounds
Student Pharmacist Service-Learning in Western Kenya: The Implementation of Electronic Prescription Entry
Purdue pharmacy students implemented a project incorporating electronic prescription entry in a rural HIV clinic pharmacy in Kitale, Kenya. Students evaluated the impact of electronic pharmacy inventory management as well as the effects on patient wait time for prescriptions. Primary outcomes included accuracy and efficiency of Kenyan pharmacy staff prescription entry. At the end of the project, students found a decrease in prescription errors as well as an increase in the speed of entry. The Kenyan pharmacy staff had few computer skills, yet after three months of using the system, the staff had improved overall patient care as well as efficiency within their workplace. This project demonstrated the impact of a student-led service project
Mind Your Meds: Safe Opioid Disposal Awareness
Driven by the effects of the opioid epidemic on friends, family members, students, and patients, members of the 2019 GEHLI Team âMission Possibleâ are dedicated to bolstering educational awareness of safe leftover opioid disposal methods to decrease the supply of opioids in our community. On average, over 2/3 of opioid prescription medications are leftover and lead to later misuse or abuse (JAMA Survey). Despite a decrease in prescription writing for pain medication over the years, the mortality rate from overdose, and the rate of infants born to mothers with opioid abuse continues to steadily increase in Virginia (VDH). Team Mission Possible seeks to promote awareness of both the need and resources available for safe opioid disposal by educating prescribers in the VCU Health system and spreading knowledge to VCU patients, students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding community through: educational events on the Monroe Park and Medical campuses; teaming up with Miss Virginiaâs âMind your Meds campaignâ; live Facebook interviews; and educational flyers
Optimization of the carrier concentration in phase-separated half-Heusler compounds
Inspired by the promising thermoelectric properties of phase-separated half-Heusler materials, we investigated the influence of electron doping in the n-type Ti_(0.3âx)Zr_(0.35)Hf_(0.35)NiSn compound. The addition of Nb to this compound led to a significant increase in its electrical conductivity, and shifted the maximum Seebeck coefficient to higher temperatures owing to the suppression of intrinsic carriers. This resulted in an enhancement of both the power factor α^2Ï and figure of merit, zT. The applicability of an average effective mass model revealed the optimized electron properties for samples containing Nb. There is evidence in the literature that the average effective mass model is suitable for estimating the optimized carrier concentration of thermoelectric n-type half-Heusler compounds
