Comment on "Bounding and approximating parabolas for the spectrum of Heisenberg spin systems" by Schmidt, Schnack and Luban

Recently, Schmidt et al. proved that the energy spectrum of a Heisenberg spin system (HSS) is bounded by two parabolas, i.e. lines which depend on the total spin quantum number S as S(S+1). The prove holds for homonuclear HSSs which fulfill a weak homogenity condition. Moreover, the extremal values of the exact spectrum of various HSS which were studied numerically were found to lie on approximate parabolas, named rotational bands, which could be obtained by a shift of the boundary parabolas. In view of this, it has been claimed that the rotational band structure (RBS) of the energy spectrum is a general behavior of HSSs. Furthermore, since the approximate parabolas are very close to the true boundaries of the spectrum for the examples discussed, it has been claimed that the methods allow to predict the detailed shape of the spectrum and related properties for a general HSS. In this comment I will show by means of examples that the RBS hypothesis is not valid for general HSSs. In particular, weak homogenity is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for a HSS to exhibit a spectrum with RBS.Comment: Comments on the work of Schmidt et al, Europhys. Microscopic magnetic modeling for the SS=1/2 alternating chain compounds Na3_3Cu2_2SbO6_6 and Na2_2Cu2_2TeO6_6

The spin-1/2 alternating Heisenberg chain system Na3_3Cu2_2SbO6_6 features two relevant exchange couplings: J1aJ_{1a} within the structural Cu2_2O6_6 dimers and J1bJ_{1b} between the dimers. Motivated by the controversially discussed nature of J1aJ_{1a}, we perform extensive density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations, including DFT+UU and hybrid functionals. Fits to the experimental magnetic susceptibility using high-temperature series expansions and quantum Monte Carlo simulations yield the optimal parameters J1aJ_{1a} = -217 K and J1bJ_{1b} = 174 K with the alternation ratio α=J1a/J1b\alpha = J_{1a}/J_{1b} \simeq -1.25. For the closely related system Na2_2Cu2_2TeO6_6, DFT yields substantially enhanced J1bJ_{1b}, but weaker J1aJ_{1a}. The comparative analysis renders the buckling of the chains as the key parameter altering the magnetic coupling regime. Numerical simulation of the dispersion relations of the alternating chain model clarify why both antiferromagnetic and ferrromagnetic J1aJ_{1a} can reproduce the experimental magnetic susceptibility data.Comment: published version: 11 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables + Supplemental materia

Island-arc Ankaramites: Primitive Melts from Fluxed Refractory Lherzolitic Mantle

    Get PDF
The distinctive island-arc ankaramites exemplified by the active Vanuatu arc may be produced by melting of refractory lherzolite under conditions in which melting is fluxed by H2O + CO2. Parental picritic ankaramite magmas with maximum CaO/Al2O3 to ≥1·5 are produced by melt segregation from residual chromite-bearing harzburgite at 1·5 GPa, ∼1320-1350°C. A pre-condition for derivation of such high CaO/Al2O3 melts from orthopyroxene-bearing sources/residues is that pyroxenes have low Al2O3 (70. Bulk compositions have CaO/Al2O3 ≥ 1·3, i.e. much higher than chondritic values. The effects of both (CO3)2− and (OH)− dissolved in the silicate melt combine with the refractory wedge composition to produce ankaramitic picrite magmas that segregate from residual harzburgite at pressures of spinel stability. Other primitive arc and back-arc magmas such as boninites (low Ca and high Ca) share the primitive signatures of island-arc ankaramites (liquidus olivine Mg number ≥90, spinels with Cr number >70). Consideration of the relative proportions of Na2O, CaO and Al2O3 in these primitive arc magmas leads to the inference of a common factor of refractory mantle fluxed by differing agents. H2O-rich fluid alone carries these refractory major element characteristics into the primitive melts (high-CaO boninites, tholeiitic picrites). Fluxing with dolomitic carbonatite melt, which may develop from C-O-H-fluids within the mantle wedge, generates high CaO/Al2O3 sources and thus facilitates the formation of picritic ankaramites. Alternatively, melting may be fluxed by hydrous dacitic to rhyodacitic melt derived from the subducted slab (garnet amphibolite or eclogite melting). In this case, higher Na2O/CaO, lower CaO/Al2O3 and higher SiO2 contents characterize the low-CaO boninite

Crystal water induced switching of magnetically active orbitals in CuCl2

The dehydration of CuCl2*2(H2O) to CuCl2 leads to a dramatic change in magnetic behavior and ground state. Combining density functional electronic structure and model calculations with thermodynamical measurements we reveal the microscopic origin of this unexpected incident -- a crystal water driven switching of the magnetically active orbitals. This switching results in a fundamental change of the coupling regime from a three-dimensional antiferromagnet to a quasi one-dimensional behavior. CuCl2 can be well described as a frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic exchange J1 and J2/J1 ~ -1.5 for which a helical ground state is predicted.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 table (PRB, accepted

Quantum phase transitions in the exactly solved spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising ladder

Ground-state behaviour of the frustrated quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with the Heisenberg intra-rung and Ising inter-rung interactions is examined in detail. The investigated model is transformed to the quantum Ising chain with composite spins in an effective transverse and longitudinal field by employing either the bond-state representation or the unitary transformation. It is shown that the ground state of the Heisenberg-Ising ladder can be descended from three exactly solvable models: the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, the 'classical' Ising chain in a longitudinal field or the spin-chain model in a staggered longitudinal-transverse field. The last model serves in evidence of the staggered bond phase with alternating singlet and triplet bonds on the rungs of two-leg ladder, which appears at moderate values of the external magnetic field and consequently leads to a fractional plateau at a half of the saturation magnetization. The ground-state phase diagram totally consists of five ordered and one quantum disordered phase, which are separated from each other either by the lines of discontinuous or continuous quantum phase transitions. The order parameters are exactly calculated for all five ordered phases and the quantum disordered phase is characterized through different short-range spin-spin correlations.Comment: corrected version, figure A1 has been changed, accepted in J. Ultra-calcic Magmas Generated from Ca-depleted Mantle: an Experimental Study on the Origin of Ankaramites

    Get PDF
Ultra-calcic ankaramitic magmas or melt inclusions are ubiquitous in arc, ocean-island and mid-ocean ridge settings. They are primitive in character (XMg > 0·65) and have high CaO contents (>14 wt %) and CaO/Al2O3 (>1·1). Experiments on an ankaramite from Epi, Vanuatu arc, demonstrate that its liquidus surface has only clinopyroxene at pressures of 15 and 20 kbar, with XCO2 in the volatile component from 0 to 0·86. The parental Epi ankaramite is thus not an unfractionated magma. However, forcing the ankaramite experimentally into saturation with olivine, orthopyroxene and spinel results in more magnesian, ultra-calcic melts with CaO/Al2O3 of 1·21-1·58. The experimental melts are not extremely Ca-rich but high in CaO/Al2O3 and in MgO (up to 18.5 wt %), and would evolve to high-CaO melts through olivine fractionation. Fractionation models show that the Epi parent magma can be derived from such ultra-calcic experimental melts through mainly olivine fractionation. We show that the experimental ultra-calcic melts could form through low-degree melting of somewhat refractory mantle. The latter would have been depleted by previous melt extraction, which increases the CaO/Al2O3 in the residue as long as some clinopyroxene remains residual. This finding corrects the common assumption that ultra-calcic magmas must come from a Ca-rich pyroxenite-type source. The temperatures necessary for the generation of ultra-calcic magmas are ≥1330°C, and their presence would suggest melting regimes that are at the upper temperature end of previous interpretations made on the basis of picritic magma

Collisional Properties of Cold Spin-Polarized Metastable Neon Atoms

We measure the rates of elastic and inelastic two-body collisions of cold spin-polarized neon atoms in the metastable 3P2 state for 20^Ne and 22^Ne in a magnetic trap. From particle loss, we determine the loss parameter of inelastic collisions beta=6.5(18)x10^{-12} cm^3s^{-1} for 20^Ne and beta=1.2(3)x10^{-11}cm^3{s}^{-1} for 22^Ne. These losses are caused by ionizing (i.e. Penning) collisions %to more than and occur less frequently than for unpolarized atoms. This proves the suppression of Penning ionization due to spin-polarization. From cross-dimensional relaxation measurements, we obtain elastic scattering lengths of a=-180(40) a_0 for 20^Ne and a=+150(+80/-50) a_0 for 22^Ne, where a_0=0.0529 nm.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Zeno Dynamics in Quantum Statistical Mechanics

    Get PDF
We study the quantum Zeno effect in quantum statistical mechanics within the operator algebraic framework. We formulate a condition for the appearance of the effect in W*-dynamical systems, in terms of the short-time behaviour of the dynamics. Examples of quantum spin systems show that this condition can be effectively applied to quantum statistical mechanical models. Further, we derive an explicit form of the Zeno generator, and use it to construct Gibbs equilibrium states for the Zeno dynamics. As a concrete example, we consider the X-Y model, for which we show that a frequent measurement at a microscopic level, e.g. a single lattice site, can produce a macroscopic effect in changing the global equilibrium.Comment: 15 pages, AMSLaTeX; typos corrected, references updated and added, acknowledgements added, style polished; revised version contains corrections from published corrigend

    Incommensurate spin correlations in highly oxidized cobaltates La2x_{2-x}Srx_{x}CoO4_{4}

    Get PDF
We observe quasi-static incommensurate magnetic peaks in neutron scattering experiments on layered cobalt oxides La2-xSrxCoO4 with high Co oxidation states that have been reported to be paramagnetic. This enables us to measure the magnetic excitations in this highly hole-doped incommensurate regime and compare our results with those found in the low-doped incommensurate regime that exhibit hourglass magnetic spectra. The hourglass shape of magnetic excitations completely disappears given a high Sr doping. Moreover, broad low-energy excitations are found, which are not centered at the incommensurate magnetic peak positions but around the quarter-integer values that are typically exhibited by excitations in the checkerboard charge ordered phase. Our findings suggest that the strong inter-site exchange interactions in the undoped islands are critical for the emergence of hourglass spectra in the incommensurate magnetic phases of La2-xSrxCoO4.Comment: http://www.nature.com/articles/srep25117
