Calibrating bead displacements in optical tweezers using acousto-optic deflectors
Displacements of optically trapped particles are often recorded using back-focal-plane interferometry. In order to calibrate the detector signals to displacements of the trapped object, several approaches are available. One often relies either on scanning a fixed bead across the waist of the laser beam or on analyzing the power spectrum of movements of the trapped bead. Here, we introduce an alternative method to perform this calibration. The method consists of very rapidly scanning the laser beam across the solvent-immersed, trapped bead using acousto-optic deflectors while recording the detector signals. It does not require any knowledge of solvent viscosity and bead diameter, and works in all types of samples, viscous or viscoelastic. Moreover, it is performed with the same bead as that used in the actual experiment. This represents marked advantages over established methods. © 2006 American Institute of Physics
Topology of event distribution as a generalized definition of phase transitions in finite systems
We propose a definition of phase transitions in finite systems based on
topology anomalies of the event distribution in the space of observations. This
generalizes all the definitions based on the curvature anomalies of
thermodynamical potentials and provides a natural definition of order
parameters. The proposed definition is directly operational from the
experimental point of view. It allows to study phase transitions in Gibbs
equilibria as well as in other ensembles such as the Tsallis ensemble.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Transient backbending behavior in the Ising model with fixed magnetization
The physical origin of the backbendings in the equations of state of finite
but not necessarily small systems is studied in the Ising model with fixed
magnetization (IMFM) by means of the topological properties of the observable
distributions and the analysis of the largest cluster with increasing lattice
size. Looking at the convexity anomalies of the IMFM thermodynamic potential,
it is shown that the order of the transition at the thermodynamic limit can be
recognized in finite systems independently of the lattice size. General
statistical mechanics arguments and analytical calculations suggest that the
backbending in the caloric curve is a transient behaviour which should not
converge to a plateau in the thermodynamic limit, while the first order
transition is signalled by a discontinuity in other observables.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure

Carrier-mediated ferromagnetic ordering in Mn ion-implanted p+GaAs:C
Highly p-type GaAs:C was ion-implanted with Mn at differing doses to produce
Mn concentrations in the 1 - 5 at.% range. In comparison to LT-GaAs and
n+GaAs:Si samples implanted under the same conditions, transport and magnetic
properties show marked differences. Transport measurements show anomalies,
consistent with observed magnetic properties and with epi- LT-(Ga,Mn)As, as
well as the extraordinary Hall Effect up to the observed magnetic ordering
temperature (T_C). Mn ion-implanted p+GaAs:C with as-grown carrier
concentrations > 10^20 cm^-3 show remanent magnetization up to 280 K
Plane-symmetric inhomogeneous magnetized viscous fluid universe with a variable
The behavior of magnetic field in plane symmetric inhomogeneous cosmological
models for bulk viscous distribution is investigated. The coefficient of bulk
viscosity is assumed to be a power function of mass density . The values of cosmological constant for these models are
found to be small and positive which are supported by the results from recent
supernovae Ia observations. Some physical and geometric aspects of the models

Measurement of the form-factor ratios for D+ --> K* l nu
The form factor ratios rv=V(0)/A1(0), r2=A2(0)/A1(0) and r3=A3(0)/A1(0) in
the decay D+ --> K* l nu, K* -->K-pi+ have been measured using data from charm
hadroproduction experiment E791 at Fermilab. From 3034 (595) signal
(background) events in the muon channel, we obtain rv=1.84+-0.11+-0.09,
r2=0.75+-0.08+-0.09 and, as a first measurement of r3, we find 0.04+-0.33
+-0.29. The values of the form factor ratios rv and r2 measured for the muon
channel are combined with the values of rv and r2 that we have measured in the
electron channel. The combined E791 results for the muon and electron channels
are rv=1.87+-0.08+-0.07 and r2=0.73+-0.06+-0.08.Comment: 9 pages + 3 figures ; submitted to PL
HI in the Outskirts of Nearby Galaxies
The HI in disk galaxies frequently extends beyond the optical image, and can
trace the dark matter there. I briefly highlight the history of high spatial
resolution HI imaging, the contribution it made to the dark matter problem, and
the current tension between several dynamical methods to break the disk-halo
degeneracy. I then turn to the flaring problem, which could in principle probe
the shape of the dark halo. Instead, however, a lot of attention is now devoted
to understanding the role of gas accretion via galactic fountains. The current
cold dark matter theory has problems on galactic scales, such as
the core-cusp problem, which can be addressed with HI observations of dwarf
galaxies. For a similar range in rotation velocities, galaxies of type Sd have
thin disks, while those of type Im are much thicker. After a few comments on
modified Newtonian dynamics and on irregular galaxies, I close with statistics
