    Elevating Librarian-Mediated Search Services: When 2nd Best Isn\u27t Good Enough

    Objective: To optimize librarian-mediated search services, librarians must consider all aspects of their search service that affect service utilization and efficacy. The library literature provides little information concerning the format in which libraries are providing literature search results and even less on the effect of format on search service utilization.  At our academic health science library, the number of search requests received rose dramatically after we began providing results in RefShare format. RefShare is the collaboration tool available in ProQuest’s RefWorks¼.  We wanted to know how other libraries were providing results and whether they had seen format affect search service utilization. Methods: A survey created using Springshare’s LibWizard¼ was distributed to the MEDLIB-L listserv, the expertsearching listserv, and through direct email to AAHSL reference and education librarians. The survey was sent out on March 31st, 2019 and closed on April 30th, 2019. We asked about the audience that the librarian/library served and requested basic information about the librarian-mediated search services offered -- with a special focus on formats used to send literature search results to the requester. Results and Conclusion: We have analyzed the survey results, and we share our findings here

    The role of the Tim8p–Tim13p complex in a conserved import pathway for mitochondrial polytopic inner membrane proteins

    Tim23p is imported via the TIM (translocase of inner membrane)22 pathway for mitochondrial inner membrane proteins. In contrast to precursors with an NH2-terminal targeting presequence that are imported in a linear NH2-terminal manner, we show that Tim23p crosses the outer membrane as a loop before inserting into the inner membrane. The Tim8p–Tim13p complex facilitates translocation across the intermembrane space by binding to the membrane spanning domains as shown by Tim23p peptide scans with the purified Tim8p–Tim13p complex and crosslinking studies with Tim23p fusion constructs. The interaction between Tim23p and the Tim8p–Tim13p complex is not dependent on zinc, and the purified Tim8p–Tim13p complex does not coordinate zinc in the conserved twin CX3C motif. Instead, the cysteine residues seemingly form intramolecular disulfide linkages. Given that proteins of the mitochondrial carrier family also pass through the TOM (translocase of outer membrane) complex as a loop, our study suggests that this translocation mechanism may be conserved. Thus, polytopic inner membrane proteins, which lack an NH2-terminal targeting sequence, pass through the TOM complex as a loop followed by binding of the small Tim proteins to the hydrophobic membrane spanning domains

    PHOTOMETRY OF TYPE II CEPHEID CANDIDATES FROM THE ROTSE-I DEMONSTRATION PROJECT

    We have obtained VR photometry of 205 Cepheid variable star candidates that were discovered in a small section of the Northern Sky Variability Survey. Given their locations and apparent magnitudes, any stars in this sample that are Cepheids are very likely to be type II Cepheids. On the basis of the regularity of variation, revised periods, light-curve morphology, slope of the color-magnitude relation, and color, we have identified 97 probable Cepheids and 17 possible Cepheids. While some of the photometric properties, particularly the colors, are consistent with the identification of these stars as Cepheids, the amplitudes are small compared to known type II Cepheids and the period distribution does not match that of known type II Cepheids.     A fully validated microbiological assay to evaluate the potency of ceftriaxone sodium

    Ceftriaxone (CFTX) sodium is a third-generation, broad-spectrum cephalosporin that is resistant to beta-lactamases. An alternative bioassay for the assessment of the potency of this drug in pharmaceutical formulations has not been previously reported. Thus, this paper reports the development and full validation of a 3 x 3 agar diffusion bioassay using a cylinder-plate method to quantify CFTX sodium in pharmaceutical samples. The strain Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P was used as the test microorganism, and the results of the proposed bioassay displayed high linearity, precision, accuracy, specificity and robustness. All potency results were statistically analyzed using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and were found to be linear (r=0.99999) in the range of 16-64 ”g/mL, accurate (100.5%), and precise [repeatability: relative standard deviation (RSD)=1.4%; intermediate precision: between-day RSD=2.1% and between-analyst RSD=2.5%]. The specificity of the bioassay was determined by evaluating a degraded sample (50 ÂșC) at 0, 24 and 48 hours as compared against the results from the pharmacopeial liquid chromatography method for CFTX. The results validated the proposed microbiological assay, which allows reliable quantitation of CFTX in pharmaceutical samples. Moreover, it is a useful, simple and low-cost alternative method for monitoring the quality of this medicine.A ceftriaxona sĂłdica Ă© uma cefalosporina de terceira geração de uso parenteral, com amplo espectro de atividade e resistente a b-lactamases. A validação desenvolvida apresentou bons resultados em termos de linearidade, precisĂŁo, exatidĂŁo, especificidade e robustez. Empregou-se o Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P como micro-organismo teste. Os resultados dos ensaios foram tratados estatisticamente utilizando-se anĂĄlise de variĂąncia (ANOVA). O mĂ©todo apresentou linearidade (r=0,99999) na faixa de doses selecionada (16-64 ”g/mL), precisĂŁo (repetibilidade: DPR=1,4%; precisĂŁo intermediĂĄria: inter-dias DPR=2,1% e inter-analistas: DPR=2,5%) e exatidĂŁo de 100,5%. A especificidade do bioensaio foi avaliada atravĂ©s da anĂĄlise comparativa, por cromatografia lĂ­quida de alta eficiĂȘncia, de amostras degradadas a 50 ÂșC nos tempos zero, 24 e 48 h. Os resultados encontrados demonstraram a validade do bioensaio proposto, o qual permite a quantificação confiĂĄvel de ceftriaxona sĂłdica em produtos farmacĂȘuticos comerciais.     Prophylactic Drain Placement in Childhood Perforated Appendicitis: Does Spillage Matter?

    Background: Prophylactic abdominal drains for perforated appendicitis in children have generally been regarded as obsolete because several studies showed inferior results for drain placement in the past. Despite these results, prophylactic abdominal drains for perforated appendicitis remain omnipresent in pediatric surgery especially when gross spillage is observed at the time of appendectomy. Here, we hypothesize that even if accounting for gross intra-abdominal spillage, prophylactic drain placement for perforated appendicitis in children is not beneficial. Patients and Methods: The charts of all children (<18 years) who underwent an appendectomy at our institution from July 2013 to March 2020 were analyzed. The data from 65 patients who presented with perforated appendicitis were included. Patients were grouped according to the amount of intraoperative spillage. Demographics, laboratory data, operative findings, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. Results: Of all patients, 34 were male, and 31 were female, with a mean age of 10.5 ± 3.7 years. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups for age and sex (p = 0.6985 and p = 0.6222, respectively). Prophylactic drains were placed according to the surgeon's preference in 32 children. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the rate of intra-abdominal abscess formation, wound infection, and bowel obstruction, regardless of the amount of spillage encountered during an appendectomy. However, independently of the amount of spillage, the length of hospital stay was longer in the children in which a drain had been placed (p = 0.0041). Conclusion: In our cohort, we could not find a benefit from drain placement even in case of gross spillage at the time of appendectomy. Rather, drain placement was associated with an increase in length of hospital stay

    Fully and accurately reconstructing changes in oceanic productivity and carbon export and their controls is critical to determining the efficiency of the biological pump and its role in the global carbon cycle through time, particularly in modern CO2 source regions like the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP). Here we present new high-resolution records of sedimentary 230Th-normalized opal and nannofossil carbonate fluxes and [231Pa/230Th]xs ratios from site MV1014-02-17JC in the Panama Basin. We find that, across the last deglaciation, phytoplankton community structure is driven by changing patterns of nutrient (nitrate, iron, and silica) availability which, in turn, are caused by variability in the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and associated changes in biogeochemical cycling and circulation in the Southern Ocean. Our multi-proxy work suggests greater scrutiny is required in the interpretation of common geochemical proxies of productivity and carbon export in the EEP

    Aim: Medical device related pressure injuries (MDRPIs) are pressure injuries that result from prolonged exposure to a compressive force, tension, shear, or combination of all from a health care associated medical device. MDRPIs are negative hospital acquired patient outcomes that are costly to an organization. At Henry Ford Jackson Hospital (HFJH) there was an increase noted in MDRPIs from new tracheostomies in 2022: Quarter 1 2022: Two tracheostomy related MDRPIs (stage 2 and stage 3) Quarter 3 2022: Two tracheostomy related MDRPIs (both unstageable) The HFJH Falls and Pressure Injury Committee created a task force to investigate if the use of a hydroconductive dressing post tracheostomy placement would decrease MDRPIs compared to standard practice hydrocellular dressings.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/nursresconf2023/1002/thumbnail.jp
