Disorder Effects in the Bipolaron System Ti4_{4}O7_{7} Studied by Photoemission Spectroscopy

We have performed a photoemission study of Ti$_{4}$O$_{7}$ around its two transition temperatures so as to cover the metallic, high-temperature insulating (bipolaron-liquid), and low-temperature insulating (bipolaron-crystal) phases. While the spectra of the low-temperature insulating phase show a finite gap at the Fermi level, the spectra of the high-temperature insulating phase are gapless, which is interpreted as a soft Coulomb gap due to dynamical disorder. We suggest that the spectra of the high-temperature disordered phase of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$, which exhibits a charge order-disorder transition (Verwey transition), can be interpreted in terms of a Coulomb gap.Comment: 4 pages, 3 epsf figures embedde

Distributed utterances

I propose an apparatus for handling intrasentential change in context. The standard approach has problems with sentences with multiple occurrences of the same demonstrative or indexical. My proposal involves the idea that contexts can be complex. Complex contexts are built out of (“simple”) Kaplanian contexts by ordered n-tupling. With these we can revise the clauses of Kaplan’s Logic of Demonstratives so that each part of a sentence is taken in a different component of a complex context. I consider other applications of the framework: to agentially distributed utterances (ones made partly by one speaker and partly by another); to an account of scare-quoting; and to an account of a binding-like phenomenon that avoids what Kit Fine calls “the antinomy of the variable.

Refusing to Endorse. A must Explanation for Pejoratives.

In her analysis of pejoratives, Eva Picardi rejects a too sharp separation between descriptive and expressive content. I reconstruct some of her arguments, endorsing Eva’s criticism of Williamson’s analysis of Dummett and developing a suggestion by Manuel Garcia Carpintero on a speech act analysis of pejoratives. Eva’s main concern is accounting for our instinctive refusal to endorse an assertion containing pejoratives because it suggests a picture of reality we do not share. Her stance might be further developed claiming that uses of pejoratives not only suggest, but also promote a wrong picture of reality. Our refusal to endorse implies rejecting not only a wrong picture of reality but also a call for participation to what that picture promotes

Comparing and combining process-based crop models and statistical models with some implications for climate change

We compare predictions of a simple process-based crop model (Soltani and Sinclair 2012), a simple statistical model (Schlenker and Roberts 2009), and a combination of both models to actual maize yields on a large, representative sample of farmer-managed fields in the Corn Belt region of the United States. After statistical post-model calibration, the process model (Simple Simulation Model, or SSM) predicts actual outcomes slightly better than the statistical model, but the combined model performs significantly better than either model. The SSM, statistical model and combined model all show similar relationships with precipitation, while the SSM better accounts for temporal patterns of precipitation, vapor pressure deficit and solar radiation. The statistical and combined models show a more negative impact associated with extreme heat for which the process model does not account. Due to the extreme heat effect, predicted impacts under uniform climate change scenarios are considerably more severe for the statistical and combined models than for the process-based model

Polyethylene glycol-coated collagen patch (hemopatch®) in open partial nephrectomy

PURPOSE To describe the results of a polyethylene glycol-coated collagen patch, Hemopatch® on blood loss, surgical time and renal function in partial nephrectomy (PN) for renal cell carcinoma (RCC). METHODS Out of a single surgeon cohort of n = 565 patients undergoing conventional open PN (CPN) between 01/2015 and 12/2017 at the University of Munich a consecutive subgroup (n = 42) was operated on using a polyethylene glycol-coated collagen-based sealant Hemopatch® (Baxter International Inc., Deerfield, IL, USA) (HPN). RESULTS Median age was 65.2~years (range 12.7-95.2) with median follow-up of 9.43~months (0.03-49.15). Baseline renal function (CKD-EPI) was 78.56~ml/min/1.73~m2 (range 20.38-143.09) with a non-significant decline to 74.78~ml/min/1.73~m2 (range 3.75-167.74) at follow-up. In CPN 46% had low complexity, 33% moderate complexity and 20% high complexity lesions with 33% low, 40% moderate and 27% high complexity masses in HPN. Median tumor size was 4.3~cm (range 1-38~cm) in CPN with 4.8~cm (range 3.8-18.3~cm) with HPN, p = 0.293. Median blood loss and duration of surgery was significantly lower in the HPN group vs. CPN (146~ml ± 195 vs. 114~ml ± 159~ml; p = 0.021; 43~min ± 27 for HPN vs. 53~min ± 49; p = 0.035) with no difference in clamping time (12.6~min ± 8.6 for HPN vs. 12.0~min ± 9.5; p = 0.701). CONCLUSIONS Hemopatch® supported renoraphy shows promising results compared to standard renoraphy in PN. No side effects were seen. Further studies should evaluate the prevention of arterio-venous or urinary fistulas. In complex partial nephrectomies Hemopatch® supported renoraphy should be considered

Two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein bipolaron

We present a diagrammatic Monte Carlo study of the properties of the Hubbard-Holstein bipolaron on a two-dimensional square lattice. With a small Coulomb repulsion, U, and with increasing electron-phonon interaction, and when reaching a value about two times smaller than the one corresponding to the transition of light polaron to heavy polaron, the system suffers a sharp transition from a state formed by two weakly bound light polarons to a heavy, strongly bound on-site bipolaron. Aside from this rather conventional bipolaron a new bipolaron state is found for large U at intermediate and large electron-phonon coupling, corresponding to two polarons bound on nearest-neighbor sites. We discuss both the properties of the different bipolaron states and the transition from one state to another. We present a phase diagram in parameter space defined by the electron-phonon coupling and U. Our numerical method does not use any artificial approximation and can be easily modified to other bipolaron models with longer range electron-phonon and/or electron-electron interaction.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure

Non-fermi-liquid single particle lineshape of the quasi-one-dimensional non-CDW metal Li_{0.9}Mo_{6}O_{17} : comparison to the Luttinger liquid

We report the detailed non-Fermi liquid (NFL) lineshape of the dispersing excitation which defines the Fermi surface (FS) for quasi-one-dimensional Li_{0.9}Mo_{6}O_{17}. The properties of Li_{0.9}Mo_{6}O_{17} strongly suggest that the NFL behavior has a purely electronic origin. Relative to the theoretical Luttinger liquid lineshape, we identify significant similarities, but also important differences.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figure

Minimizing complications during retropubic radical prostatectomy - is ureteral stenting necessary?

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Objectives and aims</p> <p>To avoid damage to the ureters during bladder neck preparation in radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, it may be helpful to insert ureteral stents temporarily or to intravenously administer indigo carmine dye for enhanced visualisation of ureteric orifices. We evaluated our bladder neck preserving technique at radical prostatectomy with regard to ureteric injuries.</p> <p>Patients and methods</p> <p>We analysed 369 consecutive radical prostatectomies operated in our clinic in a bladder neck preserving technique. The following parameters were assessed in this retrospective study: number of prophylactic ureteric stent insertions, application of indigo carmine dye, observed injuries of the ureters by the surgeon, postoperative increase of serum creatinine and postoperative status of kidney ultrasound.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In 7/369 prostatectomies (1.90%) a ureteric stent insertion was performed, indigo carmine was not applied to any patient at all, yet no intraoperative injury of a ureter was observed by a surgeon. No revision was necessary due to a ureteral injury within the observation period of one year after surgery. In 17 patients with preoperative normal creatinine value a pathological value was observed on the first postoperative day (mean 1.4 mg/dl). In these patients no consecutive postrenal acute renal failure was observed, no hydronephrosis was monitored by ultrasound and no further intervention was necessary.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Bladder neck preserving operation technique does not implicate the need of prophylactic ureteric stent insertions and has no higher incidence of ureteric injuries.</p
