    A Production View on Patent Procurement

    When we think of a “production environment,” a law firm patent practice is not usually the first thing that comes to mind. But why not? Patent practices are highly process-oriented, and they certainly involve “manufacturing” work product, primarily in the form of new patent applications and office action responses. This article discusses how, with a production view on patent procurement, exploiting the principles of lean production can be a compelling way to adapt to tough issues presently roiling the patent ecosystem

    Region and volume dependencies in spectral linewidth assessed by 1H 2D chemical shift imaging in the monkey brain at 7T

    High magnetic fields increase the sensitivity and spectral dispersion in MR spectroscopy. In contrast, spectral peaks are broadened in vivo at higher field strength due to stronger susceptibility-induced effects. Strategies to minimize the spectral linewidth are therefore of critical importance. In the present study, 1H 2D chemical shift imaging (CSI) at short echo time was performed in the macaque monkey brain at 7 T. Dependencies of spectral linewidth on the CSI voxel size were determined by data reconstruction at different spatial resolution. An overall linewidth narrowing at increased spatial resolution is shown and regional differences are demonstrated

    Deaf Children’s Science Content Learning in Direct Instruction versus Interpreted Instruction

    This research study compared learning of 6-9th grade deaf students under two modes of educational delivery – interpreted vs. direct instruction using science lessons. Nineteen deaf students participated in the study in which they were taught six science lessons in American Sign Language. In one condition, the lessons were taught by a hearing teacher in English and were translated in ASL via a professional and certified interpreter. In the second condition, the lessons were taught to the students in ASL by a deaf teacher. All students saw three lessons delivered via an interpreter and three different lessons in direct ASL; the order of delivery of each presentation was counter balanced between the two groups of students. Following the instruction, each group was tested on the science lecture materials with six comprehension questions. Results indicated that deaf students who received direct instruction in ASL from the deaf teacher scored higher on content knowledge

    Adsorption on carbon nanotubes: quantum spin tubes, magnetization plateaus, and conformal symmetry

    We formulate the problem of adsorption onto the surface of a carbon nanotube as a lattice gas on a triangular lattice wrapped around a cylinder. This model is equivalent to an XXZ Heisenberg quantum spin tube. The geometric frustration due to wrapping leads generically to four magnetization plateaus, in contrast to the two on a flat graphite sheet. We obtain analytical and numerical results for the magnetizations and transition fields for armchair, zig-zag and chiral nanotubes. The zig-zags are exceptional in that one of the plateaus has extensive zero temperature entropy in the classical limit. Quantum effects lift up the degeneracy, leaving gapless excitations which are described by a c=1c=1 conformal field theory with compactification radius quantized by the tube circumference.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
