Expressed Emotion, Mental Health, and Functioning in Families of Children with and without Asthma
Introduction: Expressed emotion (EE), the affective attitudes and behaviors of one toward another, can affect caregivers’ behaviors toward their child. Research examining associations between EE and child/family outcomes is mixed; these associations may be affected by other influences such as the presence of a chronic disease or parent mental health. In this study of families living in an urban area, we examined associations between EE and child outcomes (anxiety/depressive symptoms) and family functioning, with parent anxiety as a covariate. We evaluated child asthma status as a moderator in these associations as the presence of a chronic illness may strengthen the association between EE and child/family outcomes.
Methods: 96 children (mean±SD age=8.83±2.03 years, 48.9% female, 92.6% African American; 47 with asthma) and their parents (81.3% annual household income\u3c$25,000) completed an observational study including interviews and questionnaires. Measures included the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC), Children’s Depressive Symptoms Inventory (CDI), Self-Report Family Inventory (SFI), Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), and Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS) coded for EE. To examine study aims, regression analyses were conducted using PROCESS macro version 3.1. Asthma status (yes/no) was examined as a moderator.
Results: EE was associated with child anxiety symptoms, child depressive symptoms, and family functioning, controlling for parent anxiety symptoms (F(1,70) =6.74, p=.011; F(1,69) =7.803, p=.007; F(1,68) =8.637, p=.004). Asthma status did not moderate any of the associations.
Conclusions: Results suggested that high levels of caregiver EE were associated with child mental health symptoms and family functioning, but asthma status did not moderate associations. It is possible that regardless of additional family demands related to asthma, EE is associated with child mental health and family functioning. Further examination into other systemic stressors that may moderate these associations is warranted, as well as the impact that minimizing parent anxiety might have on overall EE.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1075/thumbnail.jp
Critical Casimir force in He films: confirmation of finite-size scaling
We present new capacitance measurements of critical Casimir force-induced
thinning of He films near the superfluid/normal transition, focused on the
region below where the effect is the greatest. He films of
238, 285, and 340 \AA thickness are adsorbed on N-doped silicon substrates with
roughness . The Casimir force scaling function ,
deduced from the thinning of these three films, collapses onto a single
universal curve, attaining a minimum at
. The collapse confirms the finite-size
scaling origin of the dip in the film thickness. Separately, we also confirm
the presence down to of the Goldstone/surface fluctuation force, which
makes the superfluid film thinner than the normal film.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR
BoltzTraP. A code for calculating band-structure dependent quantities
A program for calculating the semi-classic transport coefficients is
described. It is based on a smoothed Fourier interpolation of the bands. From
this analytical representation we calculate the derivatives necessary for the
transport distributions. The method is compared to earlier calculations, which
in principle should be exact within Boltzmann theory, and a very convincing
agreement is found
Flux through a hole from a shaken granular medium
We have measured the flux of grains from a hole in the bottom of a shaken
container of grains. We find that the peak velocity of the vibration, vmax,
controls the flux, i.e., the flux is nearly independent of the frequency and
acceleration amplitude for a given value of vmax. The flux decreases with
increasing peak velocity and then becomes almost constant for the largest
values of vmax. The data at low peak velocity can be quantitatively described
by a simple model, but the crossover to nearly constant flux at larger peak
velocity suggests a regime in which the granular density near the container
bottom is independent of the energy input to the system.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. to appear in Physical Review
Assim, a pandemia
doação; compra e venda a preços solidários; mercados populares; feiras agroecológicas;
dos CCC, além dos desafios na logística e no uso das ferramentas digitaisDue to restriction measures imposed by governments to contain the Covid-19 pandemic,
small farmers had difficulties in marketing their production. Additionally, unemployment
and declining income have increased food and nutritional insecurity, especially among the
most vulnerable urban populations. Thus, the pandemic exposed the weaknesses of current
food systems. The Agroecology Fund (AEF) is a fund supporting agroecological projects
that has launched an emergency fund in response to the pandemic. This work aimed to
analyze the short food supply chains (SFSC) promoted by NGOs and farmers' organizations
supported by the AEF during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research was predominantly a
qualitative case study. An analysis of the reports prepared by the organizations was
conducted. At least 3613 farmers were supported by 21 initiatives. The SFSC promoted
were: procurement and donation; procurement and selling at solidarity prices; popular
markets; agroecological fairs; digital markets; shops and kiosks; mobile and pop-up stores;
consumption nodes; and community-supported agriculture. Restriction measures were the
main difficulty in conducting the SFSC, in addition to the challenges in logistics and in the
use of digital tool
Numerical study of the thermoelectric power factor in ultra-thin Si nanowires
Low dimensional structures have demonstrated improved thermoelectric (TE)
performance because of a drastic reduction in their thermal conductivity,
{\kappa}l. This has been observed for a variety of materials, even for
traditionally poor thermoelectrics such as silicon. Other than the reduction in
{\kappa}l, further improvements in the TE figure of merit ZT could potentially
originate from the thermoelectric power factor. In this work, we couple the
ballistic (Landauer) and diffusive linearized Boltzmann electron transport
theory to the atomistic sp3d5s*-spin-orbit-coupled tight-binding (TB)
electronic structure model. We calculate the room temperature electrical
conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor of narrow 1D Si nanowires
(NWs). We describe the numerical formulation of coupling TB to those transport
formalisms, the approximations involved, and explain the differences in the
conclusions obtained from each model. We investigate the effects of cross
section size, transport orientation and confinement orientation, and the
influence of the different scattering mechanisms. We show that such methodology
can provide robust results for structures including thousands of atoms in the
simulation domain and extending to length scales beyond 10nm, and point towards
insightful design directions using the length scale and geometry as a design
degree of freedom. We find that the effect of low dimensionality on the
thermoelectric power factor of Si NWs can be observed at diameters below ~7nm,
and that quantum confinement and different transport orientations offer the
possibility for power factor optimization.Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures; Journal of Computational Electronics, 201
