Colouring the Ordinary and Going Beyond Language: Notes on Iris Murdoch on Ordinary Language Philosophy and Critical Theory.
Philosophy - Master's ThesisFILO350MAHF-FIL
Effectiveness of Social Storiesâą for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
This study evaluated the effectiveness of Social Storiesâą for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), by beginning to address three serious methodological shortcomings in previous studies: (1) not using experimental research designs, (2) not isolating Social Storiesâą as the sole independent variable, and (3) not following Gray\u27s guidelines for writing and presenting Social Storiesâą. This study also examined the minimum receptive language level required to benefit from Social Storiesâą. Fifteen boys with ASD, between the ages of 27 and 92 months, participated. Participants were divided into 4 groups based on their receptive language levels on the Mullen Scales of Early Learning. The mean receptive language levels for Groups 1 to 4 were 13.75,24.00, 31.50, and 45.25 months, respectively. A multiple baseline design was used for each group. Lead therapists were 13 mothers, 1 father, and 1 teacher. Data were analyzed using visual inspection. Three of the 4 participants in Group 4 demonstrated immediate, notable downward shifts in level in their respective, challenging target behaviours following intervention. By contrast, only 1 or 2 of the participants in Groups 1 to 3 demonstrated changes in their respective target behaviours following intervention. Thus, the changes in these groups could not be reliably attributed to the Social Storiesâą. The results provide support for the use of Social Storiesâą to decrease challenging behaviours in most children with receptive language at or above the 37-month level, plus or minus a few months. The results also suggest that children\u27s receptive language is a reasonably good predictor of whether or not they will benefit from this intervention. Social validity of Social Storiesâą was assessed using a modified version of the Treatment Evaluation Inventory Short Form. Most lead therapists considered Social Storiesâą to be acceptable and effective, even for children who did not show behaviour change. Furthermore, child participants seemed to like this treatment. Recommendations are provided for parents, clinicians, and researchers
Predicting romantic relationship satisfaction using three self-disclosure variables.
Three self-disclosure variables have been associated with romantic relationship satisfaction: (1) personal self-disclosure, (2) partner self-disclosure, and (3) the difference between the two. This study re-examines the relation between each of these self-disclosure variables and males\u27 and females\u27 romantic relationship satisfaction. This study also provides answers to two novel questions: (1) which self-disclosure variable best predicts males\u27 romantic relationship satisfaction, and (2) which best predicts females\u27 romantic relationship satisfaction. Participants were 124 heterosexual couples who completed the following four measures: the Background Inventory, the Self-Disclosure Index, the Dyadic Satisfaction Subscale, and the Relationship Assessment Scale. Results indicated that only two of the three self-disclosure variables (viz., personal self-disclosure and partner self-disclosure) predicted romantic relationship satisfaction. Although these variables were found to be equally good predictors of females\u27 romantic relationship satisfaction, personal self-disclosure emerged as the best predictor of males\u27 romantic relationship satisfaction. Stepwise multiple regressions supported correlations revealing that, for females, the optimal prediction model involved the interaction between personal and partner self-disclosure, whereas for males, the optimal prediction model involved only personal self-disclosure. A possible reason for this sex difference is discussed.Dept. of Psychology. Paper copy at Leddy Library: Theses & Major Papers - Basement, West Bldg. / Call Number: Thesis2004 .S33. In Situ Electrochemical Investigations of Inherently Chiral 2,2âČ-Biindole Architectures with Oligothiophene Terminals
AbstractThe synthesis and characterization of three new inherently chiral N,NâČâdipropylâ3,3âČâdiheteroarylâ2,2âČâbiindole monomers, nicknamed Ind2T4, Ind2T6 and Ind2Ph2T4, which differ in the number of thiophenes as terminals, are reported. In addition to a full monomer characterization, stable electroactive oligomeric films were obtained by electroâoxidation upon cycling to potentials which activate the thiophene terminals. Cyclic voltammetry, UVâVisâNIR spectroelectrochemistry and inâ
situ conductance measurements show that oligomeric films of Ind2T6 present the best stability and electrochromic switching performance. Enantioselective tests with a chiral ferrocene amine clearly show the potential as chiral selectors for analytical and sensing purposes
Vibrational analysis of a flexible bicycle stem during indoor in-vivo cycling on a two rollers servohydraulic test bench
Introduction. Comfort is an important parameter correlated to bicycle usability and depends deeply on vibrations and human perception. The most of vibrations is generated by the interaction between road and wheels and sensed at hands and seat [1][2]. Different approaches were used to evaluate the in-vivo behaviour of different bycicle postures and components, including vibrational excitation applied to the wheels [2],[3]. The present work presents results obtained from a full scale roller bench test [3] on a flexible stem supposed to improve the riding comfort.
External vibrations were applied to both wheels using a two rollers servohydraulic test bench [3] with a random load function generator corresponding to road types defined by the ISO 8608: 2016.
Methods. A specific flexible stem (Shockstop produced by Redshift), designed to reduce accelerations transmitted to the hands by selectable elastomeric shock-absorbing inserts (SOFT, MEDIUM, HARD), was compared to a standard rigid stem (Deda zero 100 Alluminum). Three road profiles (A= Airport runways and super highways; B= Normal pavements; C= Unpaved and damaged roads, ISO 8608: 2016) were applied to the cyclist in two postures (Posture1-Hands on upper handlebar brakes, Posture2-Hands on handlebar drops).
Results. Table 1 reports the Comfort index and Transmission index percent variations respect to the RIGID stem (Red cells represent lower performance). As it can be seen, based on CI the Flexible stems seems to improve comfort in both postures and stem hardness with lower roas harshness, but gives not favourable results in Posture 1 with road C. The transmission index TI seems to give opposite results than the CI in Posture 1, whereas shows better agreement in posture 2.
Conclusions. The study shows the suitability of the roller test bench for the stationary analysis of comfort related component in bicycle. The significance of the two parameters CI and TI deserve comparison with a larger number of subjects and their subjective evaluation

he stock market of the stock exchange has become an investment alternative with a great growth in Brazil in recent years. This attractiveness is due to the possibility of obtaining more expressive gains than those offered by more conservative financial investments. Also, with the possibility of higher return, one should take into account the risk scenarios of devaluation of the amount invested. The investment in shares of companies is considered an option with possibility of greater profitability, but of greater risk. To reduce the risk of possible losses, diversification of stocks is recommended, avoiding concentration. The search for stock selection to build a portfolio of investment in risky assets remains one of the major central problems in financial economics, both from an academic standpoint as well as for investors. The first model for stock portfolio selection was that of Markowitz which soon became a good alternative, but due to its complexity it needed a lot of data processing capacity and consumed a lot of resources. Thus, with the passage of time, other models were developed, among them the equally weighted 1 / N stock selection model. The objective of this study was to elaborate a stock selection strategy to compose theoretical portfolios using the 1 / N method and to verify if it is able to present a profitability superior to the Bovespa Index in the period from 2013 to 2017, it was built portfolios that ranged from 10 to 19 stocks per period. The research used as a criterion for selection of shares to compose the theoretical portfolios Sharpe's Index and the regularity of the shares in the four-month period and the quarterly rebalancing. It should be noted that the algorithms required for data extraction, portfolio formation and performance analysis were developed in "R" programming language. Regarding the results, the portfolios with the criteria adopted by this research presented a performance superior to the Bovespa Index and the valuation of savings, but below the CDI profitability. The portfolio with the best performance was the one containing 18 shares.
People with disabilities have suffered some loss or some abnormality of a structure or
psychological, physiological or anatomical function that causes does not have enough capacity
in performing activities considered normal for people who have no disabilities. The existence
of a large number of physically disabled people is very noticed by the population, these people
having difficulties in locomotion and usually need to use resources, such as a wheelchair.
This work presents a proposal to improve mobility of people with disabilities through the
use of embedded systems to increase quality of life and social well being. To achieve the
proposed goal, was structured a research methodology consisting of four steps: biomedical
instrumentation, hardware development, software development and integration the software
with the hardware. Initially biomedical instrumentation is done through electrodes placed
near the eyes. the Software is developed with an artificial intelligence algorithm to move the
motors of the chair through the instrumented signals. After, the hardware is developed using
the Arduino and finally is done the integration of software and hardware, thus being able to
perform the tests. The objective with this project is to develop an interactive system for people
with physical disabilities to control a wheelchair through the electrical signals from the ocular
nerve using concepts of Artificial Intelligence.
