    BanksÂ’ participation in the Eurosystem auctions and money market integration

    Bidding Behaviour, auctions, open market operations, money market, liquidity management Abstract: We perform a panel analysis of bidding in the Eurosystem auctions, using individual data that include the bidder code, size, nationality and membership in a banking group. We find that an increase in interest rate volatility lowers the probability of bidding, but induces bidders to shade rates less. Large bidders participate more regularly, while group bidders demand larger amounts, showing an aptitude to act as liquidity brokers. Our findings support the transnational bank hypothesis (Freixas- Holthausen, 2005): banks with a multinational profile use their informational advantage to arbitrage out the differences in interest rates across countries, thus fostering money market integration.

    Lifetime of fluorescent dye molecules in dense aqueous suspensions of polystyrene nanoparticles

    We study the lifetime of two common fluorescent dye molecules from the Alexa Fluor NHS Ester family dissolved in water in an opaque aqueous dispersion of dielectric polystyrene nanoparticles. We investigate the role of the dispersion composition by varying the particle concentration and adding SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) surfactant molecules. The observed strong changes in lifetime of Alexa 430 can be attributed to the relative contribution of radiative and non-radiative decay channels while the lifetime of the Alexa 488 dye depends only weakly on the sample composition. For Alexa 430, a dye with a rather low quantum yield in aqueous solution, the addition of polystyrene nanoparticles leads to a significant enhancement in quantum yield and an associated increase of the fluorescent lifetime by up to 55 %. We speculate that the increased quantum yield can be attributed to the hydrophobic effect on the structure of water in the boundary layer around the polystyrene particles in suspension. Adding SDS acts as a quencher. Over a range of particle concentrations the particle induced increase of the lifetime can be completely compensated by adding SDS

    An Experimental Testbed and Methodology for Characterizing IEEE 802.11 Network Cards

    It has been observed that IEEE 802.11 commercial cards produced by different vendors show a different behavior in terms of perceived throughput or access delay. Performance differences are evident both when the cards contend alone to the channel, and when heterogeneous cards contend together. Since the performance disaligment does not disappear by averaging the environmental factors (such as propagation conditions, laptop models, traffic generators, etc), it is evident that the well known throughput-fairness property of the DCF protocol is not guaranteed in actual networks. In this paper we propose a methodological approach devised to experimentally characterize the IEEE 802.11 commercial cards thus understanding and predicting their performances in different network scenarios. We set up some specific experiments using a custom test equipment, able to classify the card behavior not only in terms of figures which are evident to the user perspective (such as the throughput), but also in terms of low-level channel access operations and delays. Our approach is able to detect potential hardware limits or not-standard MAC implementations, which severely affect the contending card performance

    Assessing the development and implementation of the Global Trigger Tool method across a large health system in Sicily

    Background: The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has proposed a new method, the Global Trigger Tool (IHI GTT), to detect and monitor adverse events (AEs) and provide information to implement improvement. In 2015, the Sicilian Health System adopted IHI GTT to assess the number, types and severity levels of AEs. The GTT was implemented in 44 of 73 Sicilian public hospitals and 18,008 clinical records (CRs) were examined. Here we present the standardized application of the GTT and the preliminary results of 14,706 reviews of CRs. Methods: IHI GTT was adapted, developed and implemented to the local context. Reviews of CRs were conducted by 199 professionals divided into 71 review teams consisting of three individuals: two of whom had clinical knowledge and expertise, and a physician to authenticate the AE. The reviewers entered data into a dedicated IT-platform. All 44 of the public hospitals were included, with approximately 300,000 yearly inpatient admissions out of a population of approximately 5 million. In total, 14,706 randomized CRs of inpatients from medicine, surgery, obstetric and ICU wards, from June 2015 to June 2018 were reviewed. Results: In 975 (6.6%) CRs at least one AE was found. Approximately 20,000 patients of the 300,000 discharged each year in Sicily have at least one AE. In 5,574 (37.9%) CRs at least one trigger was found. A total of 1,542 AEs were found. The analysis of ROC curve shows that the presence of two triggers in a CR indicates with high probability the presence of an AE. The most frequent type of AE was in-hospital related infection. Conclusions: The GTT is an efficient method to identify AEs and to track improvement of care. The analysis and monitoring of some triggers is important to prevent AEs. However, it is a labor-intensive method, particularly if the CRs are paper-based

    Real time assessment of hand-arm vibration system based on capacitive MEMS accelerometers

    Vibrations are a well known potential cause of health diseases and therefore constitute a main concern for the safety of workers in a large number of activities. In order to prevent health hazards, national and international institutions have issued laws and directives which establish recommended limits to the workers’ exposure to vibrations during operations. Consequently, if the amount of adsorbed vibration exceeds the allowable daily limits the worker has to stop his job. Recent wireless sensing and communicating technologies can effectively be employed for such purpose, allowing to develop monitoring customized devices at affordable cost which could be easily employed during the workers’ activity. In such context, the present research proposes an innovative system aimed at estimating the hand–arm exposure to vibration according to the Standard EN ISO 5349-1:2004. In particular the proposed system is based on Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology and involves the design of a compact wearable unit to be attached to the waist of the operator and a fixed station for data storage and analysis. The paper reports the design of such a system and an experimental test performed on hand held shakers commonly employed for olive harvesting. The results highlight the opportunities offered by these emerging technologies in developing intelligent devices to be included in the worker’s equipment which might significantly modify the current approach to safety management in the next future

    Repair of a spinal pseudomeningocele in a delayed postsurgical cerebrospinal fluid leak using titanium U-clips: Technical note

    Introduction: Chronic cerebrospinal fluid leak (CCFL) represents a possible event following spine surgery, with an incidence rate ranging from 5 to 18%. In literature have been reported few modification techniques that involved the use of titanium U-clips with the aim to reduce dural traumatism during its closure but only after non-accidental durotomy. Case illustration: We report the case of a 47-year-old female with history of L5-S1 microsurgical discectomy. After one year the patient was admitted to our unit because she presented progressive skin swelling in the lumbar region, intermittent headache and recurrent episodes of lipothymia. One-year MRI showed a voluminous subcutaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-like intensity collection in the T2-weighted sequences and communicating with the right L5-S1 interlaminar space. A second surgery revealed pseudomeningocele and a 5 mm dural defect is identified. At first, a tobacco pouch was created, and a suture with Prolene 6–0, a non-absorbable, synthetic monofilament, is made on the previously dissected tissue. In a second step, 2 medium/short non-penetrating titanium U-clips are applied with a multi-clip applier. There was no sign of recurrent pseudomeningocele in the 2-year follow-up. Conclusion: The authors presented a novel use of titanium U-clips to manage an insidious and complex case of pseudomeningocele in a CCFL. U-clips represent a safe and effective tool in CCFL repair

    Histopathology of Skeletal Muscle in a Distal Motor Neuropathy Associated with a Mutant CCT5 Subunit: Clues for Future Developments to Improve Differential Diagnosis and Personalized Therapy

    Genetic chaperonopathies are rare but, because of misdiagnosis, there are probably more cases than those that are recorded in the literature and databases. This occurs because practitioners are generally unaware of the existence and/or the symptoms and signs of chaperonopathies. It is necessary to educate the medical community about these diseases and, with research, to unveil their mechanisms. The structure and functions of various chaperones in vitro have been studied, but information on the impact of mutant chaperones in humans, in vivo, is scarce. Here, we present a succinct review of the most salient abnormalities of skeletal muscle, based on our earlier report of a patient who carried a mutation in the chaperonin CCT5 subunit and suffered from a distal motor neuropathy of early onset. We discuss our results in relation to the very few other published pertinent reports we were able to find. A complex picture of multiple muscle-tissue abnormalities was evident, with signs of atrophy, apoptosis, and abnormally low levels and atypical distribution patterns of some components of muscle and the chaperone system. In-silico analysis predicts that the mutation affects CCT5 in a way that could interfere with the recognition and handling of substrate. Thus, it is possible that some of the abnormalities are the direct consequence of defective chaperoning, but others may be indirectly related to defective chaperoning or caused by other different pathogenic pathways. Biochemical, and molecular biologic and genetic analyses should now help in understanding the mechanisms underpinning the histologic abnormalities and, thus, provide clues to facilitate diagnosis and guide the development of therapeutic tools
