Adopting the eclipse communication framework: The case of eConference

eConference is a text-based conferencing tool, built upon the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP), which has evolved over four versions since its first release in 2002. In the latest version, our tool has reached communication protocol independency thanks to the adoption of the Eclipse Communication Framework (ECF). This paper describes how the development of this new release of eConference has unexpectedly evolved due to the underestimated impact of adopting ECF as a network layer. The problems encountered have been tackled by developing an aspect-based framework, which promises to be applicable to other distributed applications built upon Eclipse RCP and with an emphasis on communication. Future improvements to both our tool and framework are also discussed

SeaConditions: a web and mobile service for safer professional and recreational activities in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract. Reliable and timely information on the environmental conditions at sea is key to the safety of professional and recreational users as well as to the optimal execution of their activities. The possibility of users obtaining environmental information in due time and with adequate accuracy in the marine and coastal environment is defined as sea situational awareness (SSA). Without adequate information on the environmental meteorological and oceanographic conditions, users have a limited capacity to respond, which has led to loss of lives and to large environmental disasters with enormous consequent damage to the economy, society and ecosystems. Within the framework of the TESSA project, new SSA services for the Mediterranean Sea have been developed. In this paper we present SeaConditions, which is a web and mobile application for the provision of meteorological and oceanographic observation and forecasting products. Model forecasts and satellite products from operational services, such as ECMWF and CMEMS, can be visualized in SeaConditions. In addition, layers of information related to bathymetry, sea level and ocean-colour data (chl a and water transparency) are displayed. Ocean forecasts at high spatial resolutions are included in the version of SeaConditions presented here. SeaConditions provides a user-friendly experience with a fluid zoom capability, facilitating the appropriate display of data with different levels of detail. SeaConditions is a single point of access to interactive maps from different geophysical fields, providing high-quality information based on advanced oceanographic models. The SeaConditions services are available through both web and mobile applications. The web application is available at www.sea-conditions.com and is accessible and compatible with present-day browsers. Interoperability with GIS software is implemented. User feedback has been collected and taken into account in order to improve the service. The SeaConditions iOS and Android apps have been downloaded by more than 105 000 users to date (May 2016), and more than 100 000 users have visited the web version

Mining Narrations. Vocations and opportunities in abandoned places of Sulcis-Iglesiente

Il paesaggio minerario sardo, prodotto delle interazioni e combinazioni tra un insieme di condizioni naturali (geologiche, morfologiche, botaniche etc.) e di realtà umane (economiche, sociali e culturali), si manifesta nella sua problematicità ma anche nelle sue possibilità inespresse o potenziali, come un palinsesto di antiche e moderne manipolazioni del suolo e del sottosuolo, di continue e radicali modificazioni degli assetti socio-economici, di tentativi di reinvenzione delle sorti di questi luoghi dismessi. La forma di questi luoghi è segnata delle coltivazioni e dei processi estrattivi che si fondono con un territorio naturale, poco antropizzato, con una rete connettiva che rimane ancora legata alle precedenti relazioni funzionali e produttive. Un grande “paesaggio archeologico” che rappresenta lo scenario – suggestivo ma anche drammatico se riferito al loro valore immateriale, alle vite sofferte dei minatori – di una cultura e di una storia che si offre, oggi, come il potenziale materiale per un nuovo progetto che ricostituisca i fondamenti economici dell’intera regione. Siamo di fronte a un territorio complesso nella sua stratificazione di infrastrutture, insediamenti e residui industriali, inserito all’interno di un precario sistema ecologico di difficile riconversione. Si tratta di paesaggi degradati che necessitano di un nuovo progetto, di potenti strumenti catalizzatori per continuare la loro narrazione. Il turismo, in questi luoghi, sembra essere il potenziale principale capace di rigenerare e consentire una rinascita economica e sociale – questioni gravi e complesse che questa parte della Sardegna sta subendo con particolare evidenza e che le attuali condizioni di emergenza dovute alla crisi sanitaria in atto porteranno ad un ulteriore grado di criticità. Quale turismo, allora, dobbiamo pensare per questi luoghi e, più in generale, quale forma di industria turistica l’Italia dovrà rielaborare per superare i limiti che nei prossimi anni saranno imposti da una maggiore attenzione ai comportamenti collettivi e alle relazioni globali? L’Heritage Tourism dovrà ridefinirsi come una categoria di fruizione differente e alternativa, dovrà ripensare i luoghi della storia come l’essenza - nel tempo e nello spazio geografico – di una dimensione dello stare lento, separato, attento alle qualità minori e diffuse di un territorio in opposizione al consumo veloce e indifferente. In questi anni alcuni progetti hanno cercato di ricostruire uno scenario per un turismo alternativo del Sulcis-Iglesiente, dove la fruibilità del sistema minerario è alimento della conoscenza e la riappropriazione - anche simbolica - di questi luoghi. Progetti che cercano di esprimere un innovativo modello di sviluppo economico, culturale e sociale, diventando un’opportunità per la valorizzazione turistico-costiero dove il tempo, la storia, la geografia, sono i materiali per la ricomposizione di un nuovo paesaggio della convivenza

Paesaggi termali. L’acqua come bene comune e dispositivo generatore dei luoghi

The paper explores the complexity of thermal landscape, focusing on the relation between the territory and its resources, in particular: water, man's work, architecture and the inhabitants. This analysis focuses on the system of relations that the thermal resource builds in both an historical and contemporary context, either rural or urban, with territory and local communities. The thermal landscape is not only a place where thermal water is present: it is an entity made up of natural and cultural elements, historical and geographical, functional and visual, material and immaterial. Water draws on and shapes the territory just to endure the actions of those who inhabit the territory. Mankind creates many artefacts and structures to take advantage of the water and, at the same time, they give healing properties and symbolic meanings to it (Berrino, 2014)

VISIR: Technological infrastructure of an operational service for safe and efficient navigation in the Mediterranean Sea

VISIR (discoVerIng Safe and effIcient Routes) is an operational decision support system (DSS) for optimal ship routing designed and implemented in the frame of the TESSA (TEchnology for Situational Sea Awareness) project. The system is aimed to increase safety and efficiency of navigation through the use of forecast environmental fields and route optimization. VISIR can be accessed through a web interface (www.visir-nav.com) and mobile applications for both iOS and Android devices. This paper focuses on the technological infrastructure developed for operating VISIR as a DSS. Its main components are described, the performance of the operational system is assessed through experimental measurements, and a few case studies are presented
